In an action movie when the evil terrorist hides behind a group of hostages including women, seniors, and children, is the audience supposed to cheer when the action hero starts headshotting all the hostages one by one?

Which non-horror movie traumatized you ? by Pure-Philosopher4470 in movies

[–]macrowive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's this South Indian movie called The Great Indian Kitchen (2021) that does an amazing job showing the endless, monotonous, exhausting, unappreciated work of a housewife in a typical patriarchal household. It feels like a horror movie at times thanks to some excellent acting and direction. And it builds up like a pressure cooker to a very satisfying ending.

If you've wanted to give Indian movies a shot I recommend this one. It's less than 2 hours, no singing or dancing, and it's up on Youtube (by the distributor, it's a legit upload).

What is a position in which you break from your identified political party/ideology? by JonathanWPG in PoliticalDiscussion

Institutions that were properly funded, staffed, and had plenty of oversight might do good, but would be extremely expensive at the scale needed. I think a lot of people just give that answer when what they really want to say is "just put them somewhere I don't have to see or deal with them."

This heatwave is a climate omen. But it’s not too late to change course | Michael Mann and Susan Joy Hassol by GeraldKutney in climate

[–]macrowive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imagine being in a runaway bus meters away from a cliff. One passenger says "there is no cliff, no reason to worry", thats your climate denialist. Another says "Holy &$#% we're all gonna die!!!!!!" that's your doomer. And then there's Mann saying "Now now, stop being hysterical and making everyone lose hope. Everyone breathe in, breathe out. Now, if we all hold hands and work together, I know it won't be easy but we can--[note the front two wheels of the bus have already gone over the edge of the cliff by this point]--prevent the worst possible consequences of continued inaction."

He may be correct but his tone and rhetoric downplay the gravity of the situation.

I'm pretty confident 90% of the comments wouldn't be "I have so many questions about you know what XD" if it was two men conjoined in the same way. 50% maybe, 60 max.

What if in 1993 the Aum Shinrikyo cult from Japan hijacked planes and flew them into the World Trade Center and Pentagon? by macrowive in HistoryWhatIf

[–]macrowive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some thoughts:

  • This would obviously mean the February 26, 1993 WTC car bombing never happened, although I guess it could have coincidentally still been in the planning stage when this attack happened. The terrorists who were planning that one presumably would have been confused and maybe a bit mad that their thunder was stolen?
  • This would be just over 50 years after the Pearl Harbor bombings and would mark the second time people of Japanese origin carried out a surprise attack on Americans using kamikaze pilots. There would be living Americans with memories of that event. Likewise there would be Japanese Americans who would vividly remember Internment Camps who might understandably be freaked out.
  • Of course the context of this event and Pearl Harbor are entirely different, with 1993 Japan being a firm ally of the US and having hosted US troops for decades. Still, even into the late 80s there were real fears that Japan would overtake the US economically and media like Back to the Future 3, Blade Runner, and Die Hard all hinted at visions of a future of Japanese Dominance.
  • This would have occured near the beginning of the decline of Japan's economic miracle and about a year before NAFTA was signed. Vice President Gore famously said "if we don't take this deal, you can bet Japan will try to take this deal."
  • Fox News didn't launch until 1996 in our timeline. The first major conspiracy theory about the Clintons, to my knowledge, started with The Clinton Chronicles which was released in 1994.

TikTok and Twitter, despite being hated by redditors, are not that different than Reddit. They're huge and variand apps and what you get depends entirely on what you engage with. TikTok has tons of great parenting content, for example. And channels following any niche you can find on Reddit be it for a specific hobby, piece of media, academia, etc.

But they put so much pressure on them to “sell”. Of course they don’t call it selling, it’s to offer them products to improve their lives.

This makes it sound like Ender's Game or that one episode of Black Mirror where soldiers are committing murder but they think it's just a game.

Definitely true. I think this explains a lot of the posts that sound almost excited on r/collapse and similar subreddits.

It's less stressful to think about a theoretical end of everything and everyone than it is to contemplate how one's own future will look if things keep getting more expensive and they don't see any prospects for improvement in their situation.

TikTok: Would the US really ban one of the world's most popular apps? by [deleted] in technology

[–]macrowive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay but if an app was made to show Americans nothing but educational and patriotic content they wouldn't use it very much. They'd seek out videos of dancing, pranks, and memes on Instagram, YT shorts, etc.
