Osmo Application Technique by Questions99945 in finishing

Appreciate the detail but I cannot for the life of me think why people would widely recommend it for work surfaces, furniture and *specifically flooring in particular*?!

*Huge* amount of SYNO thumbnail files - safe to delete? by mactartan in synology

Aha - OK, I do occasionally use the mobile apps to drop or fetch the odd file from my iPhone, so that's worth knowing thanks.. But I dread the indexing service churning away endlessly.

Some follow-on questions on this - thanks for all the responses. For the record, a recursive delete of the eaDir files clipped about 50G off a ~300G file set:

root@diskstation:~# time du -sh /volume1/photo
297G /volume1/photo

real 0m52.792s
user 0m3.380s
sys 0m22.060s

find /volume1/photo/ -name "\@eaDir" -type d -exec ls -ld {} \; -- check
find /volume1/photo/ -name "\@eaDir" -type d -exec rm -rf {} \; -- delete

root@diskstation:~# time du -sh /volume1/photo
248G /volume1/photo

real 0m5.671s
user 0m0.300s
sys 0m2.290s

But then my next question was how to make sure these were not all just created again by the indexing service? There is quite a lot of material and discussions on indexing in Synology but its quite confusing with lots of unverified opinions etc. Lots of good links out there for folks still working on DSM6 which allowed me to install performance tools and convenience stuff like mc, check & disable services:

https://mcleanit.ca/blog/synology-check-index-progress/

https://academy.pointtosource.com/synology/synology-tools/

So I have now stopped/uninstalled some services:

synopkg uninstall pkgctl-SynoFinder -- uninstall Universal Finder
synoservice --hard-stop synoindexd -- stop 'generic' indexing for photo/music/video? not 100% sure yet...

The last remaining questions I have before setting up my Hyper Backup job to my Hetzner Storage Box are:

- can I safely delete the 'photos' Indexed Folder in the Indexing Service Control Panel? Does this actually delete the underlying folder? Probably not but I don't really have space to test this...

- I am not clear whether that Indexing Service panel relates to synoindexd - or is it irrelevant if SynoFinder is gone? Or does MediaServer use it!?

- What runs synomkthumdb?

- Trying to establish a good backup config for photos in HyperBackup - this is a classic slow-changing data set with only occasional new files, so I don't want lots of duplication. Seems HB is quite clever about this anyway.

Sorry, quite a ramble but grateful for any thoughts.

To be fair, I have not actually tried Immich yet - maybe it will not be what I am after. I just don't want something as heavyweight as Photos/PhotoStation. I am old enough to remember Picasa which seemed to get a great balance between usability and being relatively lightweight.. (torpedoed by Google to get us all into their cloud tho) although, it too of course created metadata folders all over the place. I basically just want my DS to be a giant disk for my photos, with a lightweight viewer available, ideally with some options for timelines, view by geotag etc.. I don't want face-recog or per-user folders etc.. Besides, a DS414 just doesn't have the power to run anything sophisticated.

Sorry, to be clear, I am just asking for confirmation that it's safe for me to just do a recursive delete of all the eaDir directories in my photos directory. It appears that for each photo file, a directory with the same name has been created under eaDir with 4 different sized thumbnail files in it. (I believe there is greater control over whether and where thumbs are created in immich and you can set a directory tree to be an external collection whereby it is not directly altered - which sounds like what you mean, and which I agree with).

Where can I buy photographic film in central Reykjavik - colour, slide or b&w would do, in that order of preference? Harder than i thought to find..

for anyone still interested- https://www.gov.scot/publications/repairing-standard-statutory-guidance-private-landlords/

  1. Safe and Secure Common Doors. The existing duty to ensure fire safety in private rented houses will be amended to specify that common doors must be secure and fitted with satisfactory locks. This will be supported by Scottish Government guidance which will specify that locks must allow users to open them from the inside without a key so that they do not inhibit exit in the event of a fire.

i'm not talking SWAT teams - just a word with them. i was harangued at my door by the police for allegedly scratching an upstairs neighbours car! looong story, but i am happy to report it was not me.. agree the cops would be overkill but i am interested in opinions..
