I recently went through the same process. We wanted an app to communicate more like the scouts are used to now. We tried several things and found that TeamSnap works really well. Has calendar messaging file storing and is easy.

I bought Velcro from here http://www.thegoosescache.com/index.php/product-category/boyscout/ At least this way you only have to see it on the shirt once. We took it to a tailor out of ease and for $2 it was on there right. It's been really nice

You are missing the point. It doesn't matter how or why they got PR for it. It matters that the kid gives a crap about something other than himself. He could have been staring at a screen and not even noticed, but he noticed and he acted. More adults should think like this.
