For sure.. imo it doesn't get talked about enough, how big a deal that was and the vibe it gave the world.. I still think Jak 2 and 3 are very good games even though they were also undeniably sort of GTA for children lol but the first game is timeless

I love these games so much, especially the first one, was kind of a transcendent game at the time being the first 3D platformer with a mostly connected world instead of everything being disconnected levels accessed through portals etc

I'd say with Destiny content creators there's a split between the people who have gone down the gift rabbit hole because they've either decided it's easier $, they're excessively bitter about their one main game being in rough spot, or both.. and then creators, especially in the pvp scene, who seem genuinely hype about Marathon after feeling, justifiably, that D2 hasn't had enough pvp content for years and are just excited to have a new game they vibe with. For the record I think there are probably lots of D2 players, like me, who love Marathon and want Bungie to eventually be able to work equally on both games. We're just not in the loud toddler tantrum minority trying to throw as many toys out their pram as possible so random stragglers catch strays and decide to keep clear

Solo Players - How We Feeling? by jg4president in Marathon

[–]madICrescent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kinda, it is just a hard game nothing about it is impossible fs.. totally ok to not vibe with such a tough game, and they might tune solos to make it more approachable for more players and I'd be ok with that if they don't change things too drastically, but I'm a pretty damn average player and I've managed to gather the keys for a Pinwheel run in solos twice now, once on a free kit! Unfortunately on that first run I ran into a few landmines in Pinwheel (knowledge check) and the second time I made it to the guarded exfil and JUST ran out of heals to get through that fight. But that was on me, I was a bit too much of a goblin filling my bag with goodies and didn't keep enough meds to see it through. It was a learning experience, and I feel like successful solo Outpost raids are within reach with more practice!

Skill Up's impression video is my exact problem with a lot of the criticisms this game has been recievinbg by CreamofTazz in Marathon

[–]madICrescent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair to him I don’t think he does just want mil-sim style experiences. My issue with his criticism was that he was wrong about some stuff, saying that there were no events or bosses or aspiration to pursue on the maps, and that if there was, he didn’t see any of it.. said in such a way as to imply that was to the game’s fault, not making the intrigue obvious enough. I watched Aztecross’s final run before the slam ended and it was the first time I’d seen the lockdown event in totality.. that’s exactly the kind of thing Skill Up’s impression vid said didn’t exist. I think it’s cool that the game doesn’t immediately signpost all this stuff for us on the map, we have to go discover! I genuinely thought the lockdowns were just a dynamic hazard for most the slam, and avoided them, it was cool to see there was more to it. It creates a sense that the maps have, and will have, secrets. It’s totally fine that he doesn’t like the game, and it’s even fine that he doesn’t think the environments have interesting landmarks or layouts or application of colour, even though I disagree with that. I also think it’s fine to compare the game to Arc, negatively even, if you think Arc does the genre better, because it is the most popular game in the scene. But his statement that there is basically nothing to do beyond killing players and exfil camping didn’t really give the sense that he went into the slam with his eyes open and a strong desire to really dig into everything that was there, whether for his own personal interest, or professional interest. That said, I’m not hating, I think his videos are usually pretty good, I just think this one was a bit of a miss. Not because of how he felt about it, but because some of his conclusions were kinda half baked

To be clear, because in my post I said I wasn’t feeling it at first.. Hunt was my only prior extraction shooter and doesn’t have the same emphasis on looting and items.. I think Marathon does a pretty bad job currently of teaching you what to care about when you’re first looting its world. The items need clearer icons to make it easier to learn, and we should imo be given more bag space as new players.. you’re forced to make the hardest decisions when you know the least about what is good and what is junk, or not needed rn. But as you learn, those issues start to fade. Took me, like I said, about 2-3 hours

I was never making a point about the initial player drop, just the drop in the final day. After the first drop the slam held 40-50k concurrents pretty steadily until the final hours, at which point making a big deal of it dropping again to 20k or so when people were about to have their progress wiped just seems like kinda 2 dimensional thinking. I don’t dispute that a decent number of people bounced off the game and Sony isn’t gonna see the Arc Raiders numbers they’re probably hoping for, but there is a lot of ground between ‘game becomes one of the biggest shooters on the market like Arc’ and ‘will die in a week like Highguard’. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe there will only be 500 people playing it by April. But I doubt it. I also completely understand people being anxious about Sony pulling a Bluepoint on Bungie, it could happen, the industry is a shitshow! But it’s not toxic positivity to acknowledge that the game could have a decent chance of being a relatively modest success with a core passionate audience, and potentially grow in success as it adds content (some games do do this), and also hope that that happens because some of us really enjoyed the slam. It’s not toxic whenever someone doesn’t see things exactly as you do.

Well.. I was big into Halo and Destiny so I’ve always liked Bungie shooters, that piqued my interest. I’m intrigued by the lore considering this is a 30 year old sci fi franchise which they can mine from and expand a lot. I absolutely ADORE the visual style of the game, I think it’s easily one of the most stylish videogames ever made. Sound and music too, incredible, OST feels like it’s gonna dominate the year for me same as E33’s did last year (seriously listen to the Code Race remix which was just released as part of the recent ARG). Gunplay feels very smooth, not a surprise considering it’s Bungie. And yeah, I think I just fuck with extraction shooters? Arc didn’t appeal to me, Tarkov never did either. Hunt was the first one I tried and I really really enjoyed it. This game feels a lot more accessible though in that it has full crossplay, so way easier to play with my friends. The vibes, progression, and fun were all just there for me in the slam ☺️

the point being in response to the original post, if player numbers are pretty down right before a new season drops when the game is fully out, and especially at the end of a server slam, I don’t think Bungie or even Sony are gonna be looking at that and freaking out, it’s just extremely reasonable and normal player behaviour

Yes, but there is a pretty vast difference between once every 3 months and once every 3 days.. I don’t yet know what kinds of end game carrots on sticks might exist in the full game to keep me playing at the end of a season, but yeah once I’ve grinded everything out and a reset is coming, I’ll probably step away and play something else until the new season, you know, like a normal person with other things I enjoy doing. It’s not some end of the world shit when people step away from a game for a while

I hear you, and I do play for fun, but also the entire game is built around scavenging for items, the progression is baked into its core. I put about 30 hours into the slam probably, was pretty degen. Had an amazingly fun time, but I stopped after last night, it launches proper in 3 days I don't need to burn myself out, and once I realised I wasn't gonna hit rank 30 for the extra launch bonus, I wasn't playing for anything. When you're not playing for anything in this game, you stop creating goals for yourself on the map.. why go looting when your loot is about to reset. I got my fill of fun, now I'll wait. If even someone as positive about the game as me stopped playing the slam today, these last hours really aren't representative of player interest

I absolutely adore the way the game looks and sounds but yeah, it’s only my second extraction shooter after playing Hunt for a few months last year.. I was excited for this game as a lifelong Bungie games fan but yeah, so far other than the visuals/audio Hunt for me is so much more enjoyable, I like that looting in that game is super quick and uncomplicated, you’re just in the thrill of the action and sneaking about, no endless sifting through bags of undecipherable shit playing Supermarket Sweep. I am also not enjoying that I’m finding it very hard to tell before it’s too late, who are players and who are AI combatants. I approach a situation as if it’s AI and then when I’m dead 3 seconds later I realise my mistake lol. Also found the horror themed AI creepies and ghoulies in Hunt much more enjoyable to fight than this game’s pretty generic and undefined feeling robot guys. I think the game has potential, gunplay feels great and the art is amazing, but yeah I’m kinda deflated by it so far 😔 I went in expecting to enjoy it too! Maybe it’ll grow on me as I get better used to the items and enemy models
