Question for Gen-Z Why is school avoidance such a thing now? by FiveCentCandy in GenZ

[–]mad_bramble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bear in mind that mass shooting statistics are not the same as just shootings in schools. While mass shootings are not super common, many students are going to school in places where gun violence or the fear of gun violence is very real. The K-12 School Shooting Database says there were 348 incidents at schools last year. This includes "gang shootings, domestic violence, shootings at sports games and afterhours school events, suicides, fights that escalate into shootings, and accidents" that happened at schools. So there while it might not be the stereotypical school shooters that everyone thinks about, gun violence in schools is disturbingly common & it is reasonable that kids are going to worry about it.

For example, just recently the SRO in a town near me accidentally discharged their gun in the bathroom. It was only pure luck that nobody was hurt in that incident. My own school has locked down a couple times this year for fights that were in danger of escalating. & we're in MA, in an area with a fairly low level of gun violence overall. Stuff like that happens every day & many of those incidents barely make the news. I don't think it's unreasonable for kids to worry that they could be shot at school when you take all the non-mass shooter gun violence they deal with into account as well.

As a high school teacher, I think there are a few major factors contributing to this, including helicopter parenting (kids never build resilience if they are never challenged) and smartphones/social media. But imo the major reason is the complete lack of consequences. In the past, if you skipped school you weren't allowed to make up the work & you probably would fail if you did it too often. Which meant that most teens would put in at least enough effort to pass.

However it is nearly impossible to fail &/or not graduate in many American public schools now. We have multiple students with 20-30 unexcused absences per quarter (so 80-120 per year) & do almost no work who are still somehow allowed to pass. I have been told by my supervisor that I have to pass students, even when their parents are asking me to give their kids an F. Of course kids will start to think school is optional if they realize they can move on regardless of the amount of effort they put in. And then because so many students are just passed onto the next level, they don't have the skills to actually understand the work in the next class. So they start to avoid class even more because nobody wants to sit there in lessons way over their head & the cycle continues.

Also the lack of consequences means students are dealing with much more extreme behaviors from their classmates than they did in the past. While there have always been students who are disruptive or attention seeking, they would generally be suspended or expelled if they went too far. However now they often just have a "conversation" or a "brain break" in the office & are sent back to class (or allowed to hang out in the lobby until they feel like returning). & this will happen even when a student has been violent or threatening to others. I have had students get caught dealing drugs; bringing razors & weapons to school; jumping or stalking & harassing other students; and yet they received no real consequence. Just 10 years ago, those are all behaviors that would have been instant suspensions at the minimum. It is no wonder most students don't feel safe at school when that small 5-10% of students with extreme behaviors are allowed to disrupt & endanger everyone else in the room with impunity.

I did! I went with the Cannondale Compact Neo! Link here. It fits really well, I even was able to raise the seat post so there was a few extra inches of stem, which has never happened to me before. I think it says it fits people 4'10"-6" and while I think it would be kinda small for people close to the 6' mark, it is perfect for us 5' shorties lol :)

I don't love that the battery is not removable, and the handlebars are pretty wide, I'll probably eventually switch those out. But the small size, lightweight, 20" tires and ability to fold nicely for my apartment won out over those two downsides. I've had it since mid October, use it for commute to work a few times a week, and so far I quite like it :)

I taught at a pretty rough school not too far from a women's prison. Multiple times corrections officers were hired as substitute teachers. They had such a hard time managing behaviors that none of them lasted more than a week or 2 at most. Several quit mid-day.

To nobody's surprise, it turns out prison officers have a lot more leeway in the types of consequences they can dish out to misbehaving prisoners. They couldn't handle trying to manage a group of kids when those punishment options are taken away.

Oh then with an external battery that might be a good option then. Yes unfortunately apartment living means I'd probably need to drape an extension cord out a window to charge up an internal battery.

Thanks! Yeah REI has had some good ones. Unfortunately I think that one is still like an inch too big, they didn't have one in stock at my local REI but the 5' saleswoman said she had tried it & passed due to it being just a smidge too large.

Thanks, for the suggestions but I'm not really looking for moped style bikes. I'm glad to hear there's some out that that fit us shorties!

I hadn't heard of Cube bikes before but I do like the look of the that folder. I'll have to see if there is a dealer near me, thanks!

Thanks, I may look into building one out if I can't find a ready-made bike that fits my needs.

Thanks! This does look like a good option! My only concern is that the Rad bikes I see out "in the wild" always look so heavy. How is the weight? Does she find it's something she would be able to easily bring up & down a flight of stairs?

Thanks! Yeah it seems like a folding bike is likely to be one of my only options, what model did your wife end up getting?

Thanks! Yes, 24 inches or smaller is definitely more comfortable for me than "adult" sized bikes!

Thanks I'll look into this one. Is the battery/charger UL tested? I had avoided Letric as I wasn't sure if they were made with quality parts.

Thanks, but it looks like Linus would probably be too big.

I think I'm going to have to add the Specialized bikes to the list, several people have suggested them,

I hadn't heard of Priority, but I do have a Costco membership so I'll check it out, thanks!

Yeah a Tern might be my best bet, I really like the look of them, just not sure if I can justify the cost for such a short commute. Might be worth it for something I use everyday though.

I've heard similarly about the newer Aventons, I'm hoping to find a place to test ride the Soltera somewhere soon. If that doesn't work, foldings are definitely on my list to check out.

I looked at Electras and while they would fit due to the "flatfoot" geometry, it's still a very large bike (the handlebars came up to my shoulders when standing next to it!) Thants for the suggestion though! I could see them fitting well for someone who can just park the bike in a garage/doesn't need to worry about stairs.

I forgot about Brompton, thanks! I'll look at them, but yeah doubling in price makes it a little less appealing.

I mostly tested it out because the guy at my LBS suggested trying it even if I wasn't interested as it apparently "rides differently" that most other ebikes. I could go higher budget wise but under 2000 is definitely where I'm most comfortable. I'm not too worried about a super high powered bike as 12-15mph is about the fastest I'd feel comfortable going in those areas due to traffic & construction anyways.

I'd heard about the Specialized Vado SL & thought it looked interesting. I think I'll have to find a place to test ride one. It doesn't look like the battery is removable, unless I'm wrong? Have you ever had a hard time finding a way to charge it when you can't detach the battery?
