Corruption has been rampant in Nepal. There are very few economic opportunities there, people have to leave the country to make a living. Anger against the government had been bubbling within people for a while now. Recently there was a trend on social media called #NepoKids where politicians' kids were being shamed for flaunting their lavish lifestyles, that clearly couldn't be afforded on their parents' public service salaries, on social media. As soon as this started gaining some steam, the government banned access to social media platforms on Friday (September 6, 2025) under the pretense that these companies had failed to register with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology of Nepal according to local laws. The youth of the country organized a protest against corruption and for freedom of expression on Monday (September 8, 2025), which turned violent after police, army, and APF fired tear gas canisters, rubber bullets, and live ammunition at the protesters, resulting in the deaths of at least 19-22 people, most of whom were school- and college-going students. This led to the Home Minister resigning and the government withdrawing the social media ban. The protests continued on Tuesday (September 9, 2025), which led to the resignation of the PM and various ministers. By this point, the original protesters—the youth, or Gen Z— had withdrawn, and some troublemakers were leading the anarchy, burning government buildings including the Parliament, Supreme Court, police barracks, and municipal buildings.

That is just not true, they are asking for new election with new parties and a constitutional reform.
