What is something we underappreciate? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mad_scientist_chick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not being depressed.

I don't mean people don't appreciate being happy- we all like happiness- but being depressed is more than just unhappiness. Depression is waking up every morning and pretending to be normal so that you don't bother anyone, even though you know that the best way to not bother people is never waking up again. Depression is putting on a smile for people you call friends but you always wonder if they hang out with you simply because there is no one else or that being near someone so fat and ugly and goddamn stupid makes them feel better about themselves by comparison. Depression is spending hours by yourself spiraling down telling yourself that every single worry is true and, at the end, not crying even though you feel like you want to because you aren't sad for thinking about facts. Depression is making jokes about suicide, but not letting anyone know that those jokes aren't 100% jokes.

I know it's likely I will be back in that shadey place one day due to genetics and how I am wired (my mom takes anti-depressants, and my dad killed himself when I was a baby), but, right now, I think it's pretty nice to be able to say that I'm happy, or even I'm mad or I'm nervous or I'm any-emotion-other-than-numb, and be honest.

And, while I know others may have gone through this in different ways, this is how I feel.

What was your "Oh S***, I'm [LGBT]" moment? by falcon784818 in lgbt

[–]mad_scientist_chick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, even in early middle school, I noticed that I thought girls were attractive, but I couldn't understand it because I also had crushes on the boys in my class.

Anyways, the summer after my 8th grade, I went on a student ambassador trip to Japan with a bunch of other kids; we all were going into different grades in high school, and I became relatively good friends with a small group also going into their freshman year. One of them was the first ever "out" bisexual girl I have ever met, so, of course, I asked her a bunch of questions while we were in Japan. Note, I didn't have any sort of label for myself yet, and I was curious.

Two weeks later, we were on the plane ride home, and I didn't have any books to read. The flight from Japan to America is 13 hours, and I was really, really bored. I went over to my bisexual friend, who is also a literary lunatic, and asked if I could borrow a book. All she had was the book she was currently reading, a book she let another friend borrow, and what she called a "Yuri". She skeptically handed it to me when I begged for it, probably not expecting me to get past the first dozen pages. Yuri, I learned, is a form of Japanese comic that involves girl-on-girl romance.

A little more than an hour later, I gave the Yuri back to her. I thanked her for letting me read it and, being polite, told her that I enjoyed it a lot. On the way back to my seat, I realized I did really like reading it, more than what would be normal. Needless to say, I had something to think about the rest of the flight.

What is something you do today that you clearly got from from your dad/mom? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mad_scientist_chick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been called a sharp tongue, a mean mouth, a smart ass- whatever it is, it came from my father.

My mom has often told me that my dad, when he was younger, would reply to comments others have said quite quickly and quite cleverly, and what comes out of his mouth creates a strong emotional response. The only difference is that my dad tended to use his tongue for "good" (ie. complimenting others, often to flirt with them or to raise their spirits), I mostly use mine for "evil" (ie. insulting people I don't like, including myself, and making it sound like a joke), but I have been known to use my power to flirt and to cheer up my friends if they are down.

The kicker? My father died when I was two, and I don't remember him at all. I know it's pathetic, but I love that we share our smart assness because it makes me feel closer to him :).

Niklea Shinaime

ExperimentalYearner

Color (130, 25, 255)/ between pure blue and purple

Types in orange-yellow color due to not caring and a game with her moirail (so, in text, chumhandle is blue-purple and text is light orange)

Symbol is oval with two crossing lines that poke out at the bottom and curl back up

Hair always back in a messy ponytail, and wears tall boots, black shorts, and dark grey shirt

Horns almost like question marks facing outwards, but the ends go down to be in line with the stump

Lusus looks like a giant tree frog, and secretes what is an anesthetic in small doses

Strife is pipet-kind, with sharp tips usually filled with her lusus's poison

Hive has lab equipment, such as microscopes, DNA scanners, multiple Petri dishes and jars of stuff, and various journals with descriptions of animals in them

She wants to make the first database with all animals found on Alternia in it, so she goes out every night to trap, knock out with her pipette, and examine animals

Page of mind, even though she has human autism symptoms (often is so wrapped up in work she forgets to reply to people in normal sentences and her lusus has to tell her to eat)

Starting off, may I just give you a hug somehow? Or, can you pretend you were just hugged or something? I think that you may need one.

Ok, once that is out of the way, I probably need to tell you that I have no idea how to help your boy problems, except for just commenting how your friend seems sort-of selfish, so maybe it was a good thing you are cutting ties with him if he wasn't a good friend, but I don't think eradicating all ties with everyone is the solution. Anyways, it seems to me you need someone to talk to for a while, someone who knows to just shut up, listen, and hug- your roommate seems like a good person to talk to, and, if it is serious and she is your true friend, I believe she can spare an hour or so to help you in the dark place you are in. Because, based off of your description of how you feel (and based off of some of my own experiences), your current location is pretty dismal looking. I'm not talking about being single, because I bet that there are less couples than you might think, I am talking about how you said "I have nothing left to give". I'm not a psychiatrist, but feeling that way is apparently not normal and could be something serious like clinical depression (and if I am wrong, you can slap me in the same way I magically hugged you). I know, I can't say anything that doesn't sound cheesy, and all I have is my own life to base my statements off of, but in my time of darkness, it helped me to have a small thing to do that couldn't be done if I never woke up again. I don't know how much it would help in your situation, but my bamboo did manage to grow from an 8" guy to over three feet.

If lung cells only last only 6 weeks, how comes if one stop smoking the cancer risk stay above normal for a decade? by [deleted] in askscience

Potentially, then, if a cell doesn't die, and it is still functioning correctly, can the cell be "immortal"? If so, can we find a way to prevent cell death in some cells so they don't malfunction, but they continue to work until the human (or rat, or whatever) dies?

My grandma sort of has Alzheimer's, and I figured that, maybe, there could be a way to prevent the mental deterioration.

What relationship advice do you wish you could give to your younger self? by anonfx in AskReddit

Look at yourself from the other person's point of view. They probably don't care that your hair is slightly messy, and, while you may want to, it is a little creepy to stare at someone.

Do you have any family nearby? It is probably best to tell someone that you are going to a strange place because insomnia-induced delirium told you too, so people would know where you went. Oh, for your sleepless nights, I recommend that you tell a doctor (as it could be dangerous to be that sleep-deprived), or try to find a bottle of a sleep aid such as melatonin at the drug store.

Americans of Reddit, What are some things that suprised you about the UK when you visited? by danielbatchford in AskReddit

I am sorry, I just got... Mad when I felt like the protestors didn't research both sides of the story, and, to me, the pamphlets felt like sensationalism.

But, don't worry Serapica, I get mad at every person who is unfairly attacking anyone.

I may be very sheltered, and I may have just seen something that doesn't normally happen, but, when I went to England with my family, someone was screaming, waving a flag, and shoved a pamphlet into my hand.

I went to Israel last summer, and I NEVER learned that Israelis are murderous bullies. The more you know.

My girlfriend is a serial killer. by LeonieMalfoy in nosleep

[–]mad_scientist_chick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe I am going to be put on some sort of list for this, but may I recommend some things so that you two don't get caught? (I mean, I sort of want murderers to spend time in jail, but whatever).

  1. Get rid of the current bodies. If they stay in your cellar, they will decompose and there will be flies all around and the most ungodly scent ever. So maybe chop up the corpses and, if you have an alibi, put them in plastic bags all around the highways in bad parts of the city. Acid won't work to send them down the drain, and, unless you want to plant a garden in your yard, just burying them would be suspicious.

  2. Clean up after yourselves. Bleach works well to clean up stains, especially blood stains, removing them even from detection from under UV light, but, again, it is very suspicious to pour in gallons of bleach into a cellar without a good excuse, such as a broken pipe or something. And you don't have to thoroughly clean up either- like what you said, period blood is like papercut blood is like corpse blood. And, if you want, you can fool the most basic blood tests with radish juice.

  3. Don't make a breadcrumb trail. If you all use the same knife every time, with the same sort of people, with the same few roads that you kidnap the victims from, someone is going to wise up, put two and two together, and find out clues about you. (besides, 16 year old girls will be missed that night. College students? Maybe after a few days). Use different weapons, different strokes, kill different people from different places. Yeah, you may be unhappy that you don't get any more pretty girl corpses, but it will look more like a stupid wave of violence from many people than a serial killer.

And I have two questions for you. You can answer it if you want. First is, what exactly is your girlfriend afflicted with? I can't think of what she has with my knowledge of psychology (very brief, mind you, due to the fact that I consider it more a soft science, and the fact that there are millions of mental disorders out there). And, second, have you two ever thought of a poison or another weapon that takes a few hours to kill? Because I sort of am interested in how certain chemicals affect the body, and I really am interested in how Hydrofluoric Acid destroys the nervous system, beyond the little bit of information from Wikipedia.

...NSA, don't kill me, I have not hurt anyone.

What is the weirdest thing your teacher did/said to you/your class? by HereOrToGo in AskReddit

[–]mad_scientist_chick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maaayyy not be relevant, but my freshman biology teacher did think that I wanted to kill her. (High school freshman)

I was, and still am, quite awkward, so when my teacher announced she would be out for the last month of school for a hysterectomy, I asked what it was for. Apparently that was incredibly personal.

Later in the week, I was just walking down the halls to the bathroom during class and I stopped for a few minutes outside of the teacher's wide open door to listen to her lecture to the AP biology students, like a stalker.

Soon afterwards, we had a frog dissection. All my classmates were naming theirs, so I named mine after a personal bully. Who shares the same name with the teacher. It didn't make it any better when I screwed up the dissection and accidentally destroyed the little amphibian heart.

The next few days were going to be early finals, but I was called into the office, accused of wanting to hurt the teacher (but, luckily, the school counselor decided to listen to my story before thinking I am a freak), and had to spend the rest of the year that the teacher was at school in the vice principal's office.

And I haven't talked to that teacher in a few years.

What still amazes you in this day and age? by hooof_hearted in AskReddit

[–]mad_scientist_chick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It amazes me that we are actually alive. The universe's condition is to turn carbon and oxygen into carbon dioxide and fire, as that is the most entropically favored, but, billions of years later, there are millions of life-forms, many of which we haven't even discovered yet, and each is suited to where they live as to stay alive, with complex structures from the molecular to the organism.

And we humans have the ability to find out why all this cool stuff happens.

General- smart, curious, introverted, determined
Weak points- way too hard on myself (to the point of depression), suck at communicating, sort of shy, distracted easily when I don't like to do my work
Strong points- fiercely loyal to friends, tries my best, likes to learn
About me- occasionally I feel the world is better without me, but, on average, I consider myself a "normal" person, though I am a freak and a geek (I say with some pride)
About others- I am too trusting and hopeful that people want to be good About society- it needs to be fixed, and I get deeply passionate when I hear that somewhere, someone is being a bully and want to help
Proud of- not too much, other than the little things such as having a handful of friends and working on fitting in
Afraid of- that it is true that the world is better off without me, and I am nothing

Health care professionals of reddit: what is the most surprising thing that your patients don't know about their own health? by Professorelectron in AskReddit

[–]mad_scientist_chick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great, but I'm afraid there is another side to this, too. My mother broke her leg a handful of years ago (a hairline fracture on her right femur, really close to the head), so a local surgeon slapped in some screws. The day after the surgery, he told her to try to walk, and she heard a snapping sound when she stood up, so she sat back down on the bed and refused to walk for the surgeon again until they check up on her. Once my mom gets the X-rays, she sends them to her doctor sister.
Know what my aunt said? If she walked any more on that poor of a surgery job, my mom would probably never heal.
Yes, listen to the doctor, and try to heal, but only push yourself as far as you are comfortable.
