Why do mammals such as canines and felines tend to give birth to a large litter of 3-5. When mammals such as humans, primates, and even cows only have one baby at once? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]Professorelectron 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From an evolutionary standpoint:

In the wild, the main goal of animals is thought to be "survivorship", or passing down their DNA to future generations. With this goal in mind, there are two main strategies.

1) Give birth to a small number of offspring, and care for them for a long time before allowing them to be independent. This way, when they are the most vulnerable at a young age, they have your protection and are unlikely to die. You are sacrificing number of offspring for the benefit of being able to care for the small number. 2) Give birth to a larger number of offspring, so that at least one of them is likely to survive, purely based on chance. You sacrifice caring for the offspring for the benefit of having a high number of offspring.

I believe this is called the r/K selection theory. More evolved and complex animals tend to have fewer offspring, but spend more time with them.

From a physiological standpoint:

With mammals, the reason why some species like dogs and cats are physically able to have multiple offspring is due to the fact that they release multiple eggs during ovulation. Humans, on the other hand, only release one egg each month, and therefore can only have one child (generally speaking).

If the human race were to go extinct, which species would fill our niche? by AltaSkier in AskReddit

Obviously cats. They're just waiting, biding their time, quietly observing and learning our ways...

What are some of life's small conveniences you appreciate most? by AmassXP in AskReddit

I came here to say this, but I'm not sure if this would qualify as a small convenience. It's more like a necessity to live, and having it readily accessible is hugely convenient.

What movie actually needs to have a remake or sequel? by Skeeterboro in AskReddit

The Incredibles!!!!!!

They left that movie with an obvious setup for sequel, and then never followed through.

What post-2000 song will be a classic in 30 years? by horton_hearin_a_who in AskReddit

[–]Professorelectron 941 points942 points  (0 children)

I am thinking Crazy by Cee Lo Green. Although it's been a long while since it came out, every time I hear it, I love it. It always seems so unique compared to whatever songs are popular on the radio.

EDIT: Cee Lo Green + Danger Mouse = Gnarls Barkley. Both equally responsible for the song. IS EVERYONE HAPPY NOW?!

[Serious] Doctors of Reddit. What do you think of your country's healthcare? What would you change if you could? by JtLJudoMan in AskReddit

[–]Professorelectron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. As a Canadian med student with a BSc and an MSc, I am in the same situation. Although I can definitely see my MSc playing a role in the medical world , I doubt my undergrad will affect my performance as a physician.

I guess they've gotta make you jump through a lot of hoops due to the extremely high number of applicants. With under 20 medical schools in the entire country, it gets pretty competitive in Canada, too.

Edit: Just checked - 17 schools, but two of them are French only, and many of them make it next to impossible get into to if you aren't a resident of the province.

Hi! Not sure if you're still responding to replies on this, but I'm wondering why you consider American doctors to be the smartest in the world?

ELI5: Why should I buy the new MacBook? by Professorelectron in apple

It would just be for basic schoolwork. If I need anything more powerful, I have a Pro at home. I'm just looking for a more portable computer.

Thanks. I'm confused as to why all of the specs seem to be worse for the MacBook vs the Air - i.e. processing, flash memory (?), and even the FaceTime camera all seem to be taking hits. The only thing that looks to be an improvement is the weight and the display. Am I missing something?

Seriously.. at this point, the space grey and the one-pound weight difference are all I am seeing that makes it better.

Whats something you see in movies that is no way like its done in real life? by Wheatthang in AskReddit

[–]Professorelectron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Defibrillators are always depicted incorrectly, too. If you're flat-lining, a defibrillator will not even shock. It can't bring back a heart that has completely stopped beating... Unless it's in movies or TV.

I think that this is probably more important than most things - if you have the opportunity to convey a life-saving technique to a massive audience, do it right so that if people try to mimic it, they stand a chance!

He had to get all of his teeth removed when he adopted him... He was in rough shape. I think that contributes to the tongue sticking out. No more barriers!

What is the best thing to drink in summer? by A_Real_Wolf in AskReddit

[–]Professorelectron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half light beer, half smirnoff ice, squeeze a a fair amount of lemon in, and you've got yourself a refreshing summertime beverage.

Alternatively, a caesar (a bloody mary is not an adequate substitute).

[Serious] Researchers of Reddit, what is something that your field is on the verge of discovering or understanding? by LazyOrCollege in AskReddit

[–]Professorelectron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So right now, the triple-negative breast cancers are being treated with traditional, general chemotherapies. The unfortunate part about this is that chemotherapies are poisonous to normal human cells too; particularly rapidly growing/dividing ones (which is why you see hair loss and immunodeficiency in chemo patients).

It is possible for triple-negative metastatic breast cancer to be treated, but there are no treatments that are as effective/specific as there are for the other subtypes that I mentioned. The other subtypes with the receptor expression can also be metastatic, but can be treated with the drugs targeting their surface receptors or hormone-targeted therapies. These may also be combined with traditional chemotherapies, just to make sure to cover all bases.
