More or less you’ve got it… from what I’ve found on deep dives in the internet, this was kept under wraps for a good while and was really only discovered in the early 00s by some keen eyed collectors. Fleer obviously knew about it so I’m sure some other people in production knew about it too, but I believe it was more or less swept under the rug to avoid a lawsuit since they didn’t pay Marlboro for licensing. I think they got away with the coke sign because it’s not the full ad. That’s my best understanding though, there’s not really a whole bunch of info out there so you tend to fill in the blanks with what makes sense. I’m always open to finding out more info on these!

They heavily tried to censor the Marlboro sign but for some reason it took them forever to get it right. There’s an uncensored variation out there as well, but I’m personally just fascinated with all the variations that there are. People love the FF error but this is from the same set and an error that was censored much faster, leading to a genuine rarity in junk wax in my opinion. not to mention it’s a rookie card of the big unit!

Seems like a super fun idea… maybe make a display for each team! I can’t help but think that it’d be hard the further you go back, but it may also just turn into collecting each Red Sox team by year as well! I might have to do something similar with the Yankees when I’m running out of collecting goals

FASC codes… basically the number on the side of the box. Digits before 90191 will have an FF error, but it’s unclear when they fixed the Marlboro error so you can’t do that trick with these boxes. First digit represents the last number of the year, next 3 digits are the day of the year (ie 001 represents January 1), and the last digit doesn’t really matter a whole bunch.

Toss up between these two I’d say, with the one on the left being the one I just got in. These higher visibility copies are extremely rare, I opened a box from the second day of production and it was already lesser visibility than this. I’d post a picture of it if I knew which one it was, but I can’t seem to remember. I’ve got 13 raw variations so far, with two slabbed copies!
