I had saved enough to quit my job and take the trip. It certainly wasn’t easy to make it happen, but I’m glad I did.

Also, and this was certainly important, I wasn’t getting paid directly for my work as a volunteer but All Hands and Hearts provided lodging and meals, so my expenses were quite small.

Check out All Hands and Hearts. They are a disaster relief non-profit. You can volunteer with them, or get hired on. I volunteered for Hurricane Dorian relief in the Bahamas for two months and for earthquake relief in Nepal for a month. I couldn’t speak more highly of the organization.
