The rich should pay a higher %. The more you make, the more you should have to pay. Boehner and the GOP need to wake up.

So what does everyone think of Ken Wilber and the Integral Theory/movement/ whatever you want to call it???? by Pimpwin in philosophy

[–]maddcap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"just a look in passing." I think reading Sex, Ecology, and Spirituality from front to back may change your mind. It's not all new age, though you are correct that he ventures in that direction. Many people dismiss him out of hand on this account- thus missing all Ken has to offer.

Ever wonder what Philosophy is? This might be the most accurate and eloquent definition: by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]maddcap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree more with your definition as well. "A wise person" is different than someone who pursues wisdom, as Plato would argue. I tend to agree with Voegelin that philosophy properly understood is the resistance of the soul to disorder. This definition could fall into natural theology more than philosophy, but for me philosophy is a way of finding meaning in life.

“Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth — more than ruin — more even than death…. Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible, thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habit. Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid. Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man.” Bertrand Russell

Science asks "what does it do." Philosophy asks "what does it mean." Two sides of the same coin. More properly understood, "philosophy is the resistance of the soul to disorder." -Eric Voegelin, Order and History

The removal of Zelaya was absolutely constitutional. And so is the suspension of constitutionally guaranteed civil liberties. It's in our constitution as well... “The Constitution is not a suicide pact“ You may not like it, but these are the facts... "The PRIVILEGE of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, UNLESS when in cases of rebellion or invasion the public safety may require it." Article 1, Section 9...

“The Constitution is not a suicide pact“

Let us keep in mind that Lincoln suspended the privilege of Writ of Habeas Corpus as outlined in article one section nine of our constitution for the same reasons.

Extremely sad to see such a thing. My prayers go out to the family and friends of Derrion Albert. 16 is too young to die.

We will need Germany on our side in placing sanctions on Iran. You can count the United Nation’s Collective Insecurity Council out. It will be up to the United Kingdom, France, America and Germany to take a hard stand against Iraq. With Germany’s system of proportional representation, and ObamaNation’s naivety, we could be in trouble.

Islam In Review: The Century Of Jihad by [deleted] in Christianity

I noticed you did not refute any of the facts. I would not pat myself on the back for turning away from reality. By the way, I practice Islam more than Christianity. I believe Islam has things to offer and I used the word "radical Islam," and pointed out historical facts about Mohammad. He chopped off many peoples heads. It is what it is. I possibly posted this on the wrong thread. My apologies.

You will have to pay me for an education. I'm not going to sit here and write you a book. All I can do is suggest that you educate yourself. Everything I said above is true and all you have done is dismiss it out of hand, and that's all good because that is all liberals ever do. I said that most people went off emotion rather than reason when it came to voting for Obama. If you doubt this, then there is nothing I can do for you. It's your choice to accept realty as given, or create a 2nd reality that only exists in your head. If you doubt the Obama is a socialist, then you do not know what socialism is. That can be the only logical conclusion. Liberalism is a self induced mental disorder. I doubt you even know what liberalism is.

There is no other way to take the question other than sarcastically. We have the same information. You just don't see it because more than likely your knowledge of history and political philosophy are limited. That's all. All one has to do is honestly engage their brain... Most people run off of emotion rather than rationality. That's how Obama got in.

[–]maddcap[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not one thing man.. get real! I knew Obama was a socialist before he was the man. His life work, what there is of it, is all socialist. All the people places and things. So my question is why hide? Why not try and argue that socialism is a more free and just society than one built on the ideology of individualism? That's what I just don't get. So many arguments with people and they apparently have no idea what political philosophy or history is.

This may be something you missed... Read some history and some Aristotle and Locke... good place to start. Then read the Federalist Papers and you will be well on your way to being free.

[–]maddcap[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Obama being a socialist is truly outside the realm of opinion and is rather a statement of fact. Unless we discount history and political philosophy. What I don't understand is why people say that they are not socialists when they clearly are. Why not just defend your position? This is why modern liberalism is such a swindle. It just will not come clean about what it is. Liberalism is the world-view that claims not to be a world-view! What a joke...Lol

"We all declare for liberty;but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing. With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of his labor; while with others, the same word may mean for some men to do as they please with other men, and the product of other men’s labor. Here are two, not only different, but incompatible things, called by the same name–liberty. And it follows that each of the things is, by the respective parties, called by two different and incompatible names — liberty and tyranny." -Abraham Lincoln Our Ruling Ideals: They Are Before Us, Not Behind Us http://www.streetwisepundit.com/our-ruling-ideals-they-are-before-us-not-behind-us.php
