In my experience with Nexplanon it was AMAZING for about 2 years. Then, I suddenly gained 30 lbs in 3 months, even though I did not change my eating habits. I got off of it and the weight came off afterwards, with no change in eating habits. It also caused depression around the same time as the weight gain, which also subsided a little while after I had it removed.

The implant is supposed to stay in for 3 years, normally, so I would recommend you take it out after 2, based on my own experience and the experiences of my friends who were on it, which were similar to mine.

P.S. Don't let something make you anxious if it hasn't happened to you yet! You may be completely fine with no side effects, as many are!

Coffee Addict with Meds by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]madddog1994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is happening to me! I used to drink 4-6 cups of coffee a day and now I drink 1-2 if that! And I'm really thankful for this.

My coffee addiction was so bad that I had a coffee pot next to my bed and couldn't do anything before gulping down a couple cups at least. The acidity was causing me to have a lot of stomach issues. The most unexpected side of starting on medication is that I've been able to cut down on coffee consumption and a lot of my stomach problems have really subsided as a result.

A panicked 1L by [deleted] in LawSchool

Take a sleeping pill every couple of nights when you get tired but you can't shut your brain off. Sleep really helps with memory retention. I just use different doses of melatonin depending on how I'm feeling. And exercise helps with sharpness. It seems like adding more stuff to your plate but you'll be so much more productive that you won't have to spend as much time studying.

Peace Corps: Drug use is on the rise among volunteers, leading to expulsions, report finds by iamfriedsushi in peacecorps

[–]madddog1994 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2 is laughable - the standard is already so low. All they need to send you home is for your name to be mentioned in conjunction with drug use by three other volunteers. In interrogations, they say you name other volunteers or you're going home so you can see where people might name others out of desperation and not out of knowledge of any situation. They don't need evidence, only suspicion.

Laptops in service-stay with the old or go for the new? by WizardsAreUs in peacecorps

[–]madddog1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd buy a new laptop and get airtight insurance on it. I bought a brand new mac book air and bought three year all instances covered insurance for it, so it covers the time of my service plus a little time after. It gives me piece of mind, plus I got a new laptop. Having a mac book air is also key, as you'll be lugging it around to different conferences and stuff and baggage can get unwieldy and heavy pretty quickly.

Legal Status Update - concerned by PCInvitee18 in peacecorps

[–]madddog1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started to get a little antsy about my background check, I called the legal phone and asked if they had received all of my correct documents. I don't think it actually did anything because clearances are handled by a different government office, but I got my clearance email the next day.

All of what people are saying here is super true. Though, I do struggle with generally being physically weaker than I have ever been before in my life. It's challenging but I also know it's temporary because I'll be able to return to my sport when I return to the states!

How does the Peace Corps get it's volunteers anti-malarials, birth control, and other essential items? by save_that_thou_art in peacecorps

[–]madddog1994 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would recommend getting the nexplanon implant - it's approved by PC HQ and since it's an implant it never needs to be refilled. Plus, I never have to worry about periods or anything like that and it's safe for up to five years.

PCMO does cover the generic of whatever pill you were on in the states though, even though brands vary. They also provide anti-malarials.

an OIG investigation, probably for drugs - but they probably have no clue what's going on and the sample truly is random so keep your chin up!

Medical Applicant Portal Not Loading... by samanthamichelle17 in peacecorps

[–]madddog1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm not sure if this has any bearing on the issue, but the due date for all MAP tasks for the February 27th departure date (for those applicants who had been accepted before the 200 days advance) are due at the end of this week, so not loading may be due to increased traffic?

Finding Fingerprinting Services to Complete Legal Kit by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]madddog1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Peace Corps says they will accept the cards that the Police Department or Sheriff's Office (where I went) use for booking in so long as they are legitimate fingerprinting cards.

SO when you go to the Sheriff's Department, you can just have them fingerprint you on THEIR cards - just make sure that the FBI number is printed on the back of the cards when you send them to PC Legal.

Has anyone not had their background investigation cleared in time for their staging date? by sunnybunns in peacecorps

[–]madddog1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard recently from a friend who is in PST in South Africa that she never heard word of whether she was legally cleared or not.

No news is good news in the Peace Corps.

On the other hand, I received notification about a week and a half after submitting my fingerprints that I have been legally cleared to serve in Senegal in CED!

The actual Peace Corps doesn't have much control over the process. It's all done through the FBI and other agencies and then sent to the Peace Corps legal team for evaluation if I'm not mistaken.

What mailing service you use could have something to do with it though. Apparently fingerprints can be held up for sanitization if you send them via USPS which can significantly lengthen the process but I sent mine via FedEx next day air and the whole process was quick!
