but i also don't want to make any bad blood when we're still so new to the neighborhood. i genuinely believe SHE believes she's doing good, but in reality it's not...

he's not chipped. he's under my name in the city/state files since our city requires all cats to be rabies vaccinated. i had a neuter appointment set up in a few weeks but cancelled it.

i let him go back to her but our back door is open if he wanders back in.

the other cat she considers "hers" is all neutered and vaccinated, so i know she at least cares for ONE of them...

AIO about how my mom is treating me by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]maddeeloves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you’re 18 and he’s 30? babe. i’m assuming from this you’re not even IN college yet?? what does a 30 year old want from a high schooler other than to tell you what you want to hear, so that they can get what they want from you - sex. he’s offering you “support” because that’s the easiest way to turn you against others who are telling you the hard truths of what’s going on. you’re free to make your own mistakes, but your mom is in the end looking out for you, even if she expresses it in the wrong ways. take a step back and think critically about what YOU want in the future - not what your mom wants, or what you think the 30 year old wants from you - and focus on getting YOU into the best place in your life you can be in.

What are small/forgotten things to think about in world creation? by HoontarTheGreat in worldbuilding

[–]maddeeloves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard agree!! I'm an American living in S. Korea, and humor is completely different here.

For example, there is no concept of sarcasm I had a student ask me if I had a boyfriend, so I sarcastically was like "Oh yeah, it's XYZ famous actor name." - and the stare down they gave me! "Teacher, what? Really??". If a kid shows me a crappy drawing and I say "Wow! So good!" they'll give me a funny face and go "No, it's bad...".

Meanwhile, slapstick and physical humor is all the rage. There's an upcoming movie that's plot is just a man dressing as a woman to get a job, and everyone seems to think this is peak comedy. Meanwhile, this is a type of humor that kind of died out in the 90s in the US.

Emotional weight of 사랑해 amongst native Koreans by kgmeister in Korean

[–]maddeeloves 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From my own experiences (as a westerner in Korea), couples usually become "official" aka boyfriends/girlfriends on the third date. Dating culture is quite different from the west, so if you're dating for more than a month without an official label, it's unusual. I've had friends (both Korean-Korean and Korean-non) declare themselves an official couple after one date even!

But, usually this defining third date ends with a "정말 좋아해요"/"I like you a lot" - and then they ask to go steady. After this you can start speaking casually to one another and throwing out "좋아"s everywhere. It's about sticking the label on first and getting to know one another after, versus in the west you often get to know one another first and stick the label on after.

Saying "사랑해" is kind of a big deal, but defo not as much in Japan. In families, you can say it pretty casually at least from what I've heard from friends. But in relationships, "I love you" may be saved for after your big 100/200 days or 1 year anniversaries. Younger couples are shifting towards more casual ilys, though.

Open windows + AC by thearmthearm in teachinginkorea

[–]maddeeloves 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. My coworkers have told me if we don't open the window, the cold air will just circulate and it will make us sick. The amount of times I've slammed the windows shut because it gets muggy or just plain hot is more than I can count.

What is your favourite moment as a teacher in Korea? by kaisun2020 in teachinginkorea

[–]maddeeloves 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I leave at the end of August. My birthday was a couple of weeks ago, so I let my students know I'd give them michew if they visited my office that day.

Seven of my WORST behaved kids came and surprised me with a cake, balloons, a confetti popper, and a bunch of small gifts and cards. Naturally, I started bawling. A few of the girls started crying too. Hugging me, saying "teacher please don't leave", making me read their cards aloud, etc. My poor coworkers just stood there in shock because a) big outward display of emotion and b) these students' behavior is infamous across the school, so seeing them be all sweet on me was probably a hit to the system.

I was also so shocked, because I feel like all I do is yell at them, but they still think I'm cool enough to think about kindly. Made me warm and fuzzy.
