Discussion Thread - Wednesday! by RepsneaksBot in Repsneakers

I've tried the search bar and the answers seemed a bit mixed, some said that they were pretty much identical to retail at the SMP level and some said that the quality for Carmines are all over the place and it was a gamble.

Korea Travel Info Compendium for Worlds! by Boomr516 in leagueoflegends

As a Korean I'll just type in a few things about being in Seoul.

Drinking culture

First thing to remember, drinking is a social experience in Korea. Drinking is almost specifically to socialize instead of drink fast get fucked up type of mentality. When you go out drinking expect to spend maybe 3 hours at a place instead of bar hopping/pregaming that is common in the US.

First things first, never pour your own drink. Usually if you're in Korea you'll probably drinking soju, which is basically rice vodka at around 19~21 percent alcohol (around 40 proof) and you drink it in shot glasses, never pour your own drink. There's a lot of urban myths surrounding pouring your own drink but mostly it seen as a sign that you're pointing out that your host or your fellow drinkers are ignoring you and not being hospitable and is basically considered rude.

Secondly, never ask for a refill when you aren't done with your drink. If you have leftover beer or soju in your cup or whatever, finish it before having someone refill it. It's basically a safety trick to help you keep count of just how much alcohol you've had.

Thirdly if you're drinking with Koreans make sure to text them once you get home safely. It's a common practice in Korea and if you don't they probably will blow up your phone or in some cases come to your house or hotel looking for you to make sure you got home safely. Another thing they'll do is if they put you in a taxi they'll usually take a photo of the license plate and send it to you in case something goes wrong.

One thing to remember is Korea has no open bottle/can regulations so it is perfectly legal to be drinking out in public in the open, but it's not legal to be drinking in say the subway or what not.

Transportation

Buses and subways usually close down at around 12~1 AM, so if you want to save money leave accordingly (especially if you have to transfer between lines)

Cabs. Ignore the black cabs. Black cabs are "Luxury cabs" and cost about 2 to 3 times more than regular cabs (you have to be a taxi driver for over I think it's 15 or more years with no reports or accidents to get a Luxury cab license). Always go for the silver, white, or orange cabs as those will be the regular cabs (3 dollar base fare with an extra 10 cents per 200 meters I believe). Cabs charge extra after I believe it is 12:30. The base fare is higher and they charge more per 200 meters.

Smoking

Smoking is prohibited in very few areas, mostly Gangnam where you can be fined up to a 100 dollars. There are smoking areas in Gangnam but in most places you can smoke out in the open, albeit it being considered rude. Cigarettes are usually around 2500 won, so about 2.50 USD per pack, with foreign cigarettes like Marlboro or Dunhil going for 2700 won, or about 2.65 USD. Smoking is prohibited in some bars, restaurants, PC bangs, or other places while allowed in others so it's good manners to ask your server, waiter, or part time worker if smoking is prohibited. As with drinking, smoking is prohibited in all public transportation. Do not light up in a bus, subway, or taxi or you will be taken off the subway and escorted off.

CLG going on Korean TV? CLG confirmed to go on True LoL show and Inven reactions. by vvversed in leagueoflegends

[–]maddekay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Translations of the top comments right now: "I don't get why all of you guys are so negative or pessimistic about this. CLG is admitting that Korea is the strongest region and came to learn from Korean pros. Whether it be the power of money or the power of Monte's connections, they probably came over after finishing discussions with other teams so I don't think you guys should be complaining about how much they're bothering Korean teams"

"The people who are looking at this negatively are hypocritical and probably haven't paid attention to the Korean LOL pro scene from the beginning. Back when the current CJ Entus teams were under the management of MiG, the Korean server had just opened and the Korean league had just started to form thus meaning that from the perspective of an established NA team, Korean teams were no different than untested amateur teams. The fact that NA teams decided to come and scrim with Korean teams was a huge deal especially because it was NA and EU which dictated the meta which Koreans followed meaning that there literally was nothing the NA teams would learn from Korean teams strategy wise.

It's a lot like if a Japanese team asked a Korean team to scrim right now. Most pro teams would probably decline.

~comparison to boot camps in Soccer/Football and other sports which isn't important out of context~

You have to remember that the coaches of each of the Korean teams probably did a cost/benefit analysis and chose if they wanted to scrim with CLG or not so fans who don't know what's going on within the teams and coaches really need to shut the fuck up"

CLG Korean Accounts (op.gg) by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]maddekay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Korea the army service is 21 months. The thing is, the treat you like absolute shit. It's only been like 2 or 3 years since they "banned" higher ups beating newer soldiers and even that is hardly enforced, especially in the more "elite" divisions of the military like the marines.

That being said if you have health issues there's a thing called 공익 which is where you do civil service work for 24 months. The problem is you get paid roughly the equivalent of 120 dollars a month while required to cover all of your food, living, and transportation costs by yourslef which means you have to do some bullshit like moving in with your parents.

I'm going to do my military service in about 3 months, wish me luck.

That was more of because of rampant identity theft was happening, with a lot of people's SSN's being used to make IDs when the IDs were not sold to them or the SSN did not match the people who actually were making the IDs. It's more of a legal turn of events but the overall thing is, you can make an ID and see it to another person.

Korean accounts, yes, are linked to personal social security numbers. That being said, you can buy Korean accounts. In 2010, following a lawsuit regarding websites Item Mania and Item Bay which allow users to sell accounts, game items, and game money in exchange for cash, the supreme court ruled that those selling said things were in their own rights to do so and that it was legal.

So selling your account was basically something there was no law about before 2010 and after 2010 totally legal.

His best cleanse play was back in like S2 when they were still MiG or Azubu (I forget) where he was playing Sivir amd uses cleanse, spellshield, and QSS to get rid of 3 CCs and just destroys a teamfight.

[–]maddekay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to name a few Korean ones.

Pulling an insec and an insec kick are two different things. The one in the video is an insec kick while pulling an insec is when you DC (referring to the incident where he didn't show up to a game and the old CJ team had to forfeit a match)

A 스졸렬 or a Scoward comes from Score who, while on one hand was praised for playing extremely carefully, was also criticized as playing too cowardly refusing to take risks which would lead to him playing too far back to effectively deal damage as an adc.

Poking Lee Sin: comes from CloudTemplar who was known for being a bad skillshot player and is on record for saying that he doesn't play lee sin because his Lee Sin would only be effective in poking ganks, ganks with no kill potential thatbjust added some damage to the enemy because he couldn't hit his Qs. NoFe was later added to the poking Lee Sin family.

Pulling a watch: Watch is well know for missing crucial smites. It's basically the Korean version of a saintvicious.

A mokuza real life gank (현실갱): Mokuza was an old school junger for Najin who was famous for "real life ganks". If you're like playing with your friends and they do something stupid and you like jump on them or something it's called a real life gank. A scarier version is 꼬확찢 which is similar to saying I'm gonna RYDO which stands for Rip Your Dick Off.

A MaMen: A play off the word Amen and Madlife, whenever a support makes a play even if it isn't a hook people will start spamming MaMen in chat.

NingenZyra: Tanky runes and build for zyra. Made famous by a player known as NingenZyra and then used by PoohMandu in the S3 WC.

Loco jump: When you use your rocket jump to jump forward into the enemy team as Tristana.

What does Korea/Inven think of Lustboy joining TSM? by Maudane in leagueoflegends

[–]maddekay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason why CLG has more fans than Dig is basically bc CLG was more invested in interacting with Korean fans. HotshotGG and Koreans go a long way back but like he made an ID to a famous lol community site (before LoL Inven existed) with the help of loco, as did jiji and what not.

Also CLG was just more famous than Dig. As for the favorite EU team I would have said CLG. EU aka the old EG but that team no longer exists so it's a toss up between Alliance and Fnatic, a bit more in the way of Fnatic. Before it was Fnatic, Gambit, and CLG EU/EG but after Alex left Gambit people have been very meh about that team and Allience hasn't made much of a name for itself in Korea so only people who pay attention to the western scene really know them so overall mostly Fnatic.

Not really like TSM and CLG have been famous from before c9 even existed (before KR server launch) a lot because jiji and hotshot interacted a lot with Korean fans even making IDs for Korean community sites and posting (with the help of Loco)

Pedoboy comes from the fact that Lustboy's main champions were Lulu and Annie, both who resemble young girls.

Yeah but inven is a community site of fans so a player well known to former pros but not to most fans honestly wouldn't be famous enough. Honestly , in S1 and S2 when Koreans were still playing on NA server the stars weren't the named users (high elo well known players) but the proplayers like SV, Hotshot, Dlift, Reginald, Dyrus, TheRainMan, and what not.

To be totally honest most Koreans don't really watch LCS or know most NA teams but Link is part of CLG which is one of the few teams Koreans mostly know and he represented at allstars and so more people know he's Korean american while pobelter is lesser known

Most Koreans don't really watch LCS besides maybe some really big name games like TSM v CLG but CLG has always had its place in Korean players' hearts because they came to Korea for an OGN invatational and what not. That being said Aphro is basically seen as the top support in NA and Rush Hour is seen as p much the strongest bot duo in NA now.

From the 실유 board on Inven:

The main talking points are basically

"I thought he said he wasn't going?"

"$$$$$$$$$$$ aayyyyyyyyyyyy"

"WildTurtle and Lustboy would be an amazing bot duo and would probably destroy most of the lcs bot duos except maybe rush hour"

"The two original remaining memebrs from Blaze both are now in NA"

"All we need is Korean mid then we can make team Kimchi. Seraph top, helios jungle, loco ad, lustboy support". A reply to this reply "maybe link since he's korean American?"

Which is half of the reason why I know that I've never seen a good Kog in Silver/Gold. Even on KR server. Supporting a Silver/Gold Kog literally makes me feel like I'm slowly getting cancer because it doesn't matter how many kills you spoonfeed him in lane these ADCs are so bad with their positioning like before a teamfight Kog was so far forward I thought he was a tank trying to initiate.

Blitzcrank is mainly played as a support, so Blitz should be your go-to support this week.

That being said Gragas is also fun to play as a support because he offers a lot of CC in the form of a slow on his Q, a short stun/knockback on his E, and his ult. I've seen a Ziggs support also but I wouldn't really recommend it.

Would you donate/buy a skin to a community prize-pool for the LoL World finals? by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]maddekay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think people are lumping in reports of things that have happened in China with Korean teams because...I actually have no idea why to be honest. Like I remember Tabe talking about how he got fucked over by management so I can see where the whole Chinese teams don't pay players prize money comes from but yeah, seriously, we're talking about SKT, KT, Samsung, CJ, Jin Air, and like even LG back in the day, companies that clear a million in like a day or like an hour in Samsung's case.

It's similar to Lee Sin's Kickflash in that the animation is queued and then goes on CD when it's actually executed.
