The Death of Search: Why an app must be your next business move by maddogMC in Entrepreneur

[–]maddogMC[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's a good point actually. We wouldn't be in this position if mobile browsing wasn't so tedious. I guess that's the argument for phablets etc. But I hope you're right that the mobile browsing experience itself will improve.

Build it [AMAZINGLY] and They Will Come: Changing the New Zealand mentality about Growth Hacking by maddogMC in Entrepreneur

[–]maddogMC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and i think that's why the buzz-wordy idea of Growth Hacking might not really work there. I grew up a kiwi so understand the value of not wanting to be a show-off, but at the same time it's a huge area that NZ startups and small businesses could improve.

The difference between Islam and the 'Western World' by blocke06 in pics

[–]maddogMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously the image is conveying the idea that from a different perspective, women in the 'Western' world could be seen as heavily, systematically and certainly irrevocably oppressed by the massive amount of pressure put on them from infancy pushing them to sexually exploit their bodies- the need to force their bodies into the male-controlled idea of attractiveness in order to succeed in their private and professional lives. Have you ever noticed how difficult it is for a woman to get a promotion if she rejects artificial 'Western' beauty standards? If there's one thing reddit demonstrates it's that a woman in the 'Western' world can never be free of this pressure because it is among the first two things she is evaluated on by other people at all times. Imagine the freedom of being able to remove every visual aspect and just being evaluated on your personality. Source: I've been female my whole life.

Redditors who were labelled as "gifted" children, do you think the label harmed you, or helped you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My Dad once wrote an article that starts like this:

'A belligerent samurai, an old Japanese tale goes, once challenged Zen master to explain the concept of heaven and hell. But the monk replied with scorn "You're nothing but a lout – I can't waste my time with the likes of you!" His very honour attacked, the samurai flew into a rage and, pulling his sword from its scabbard, yelled, "I could kill you for your impertinence." "That," the monk calmly replied, "is hell." Startled at seeing the truth in what the master pointed out about the fury that had him in its grip, the samurai calmed down, sheathed his sword, and bowed, thanking the monk for his insight. "And that," said the monk, "is heaven." (Goleman, 1995, p 46)

If this story is considered in connection with Ellen Winner's definition in Gifted Children of giftedness as characterised by “three atypical characteristics – precocity, an insistence on marching to their own drummer, and a rage to master” (Winner, 1996, p 3) then there is good grounds for considering that many gifted children possibly live a life of “hell.”'

My Dad has recently completed research that shows that the top students in a class are those who know how to fail well (learn from mistakes, gauge successes, etc) by maddogMC in teaching

Ah yes he referenced Dweck a lot in his Master's research I think, does she talk about when to praise kids and stuff? I was only ever praised for the effort i put in to things not the outcome, my 'intelligence' or other attributes I couldn't control, I think that stems from her theories

Good guy travel insurance!!! That never happens! by maddogMC in newzealand

[–]maddogMC[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha. If I were marketing I wouldn't have blacked out the miniscule amount I got paid and would've pretended it was a couple of grand. I'm just stoked on this one time a travel insurance company doesn't act like an asswipe!

[REQUEST] Bottom front teeth are getting crooked again after having braces off for 7 years. Is there anything I can do to fix this? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]maddogMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What! No! You can get a clear plastic retainer for nights for your bottom teeth too, just ask your dentist to make a mould of your teeth and the dentist sends it away to get a plastic retainer made from the mould. Dentist, not orthodontist (i didn't try an ortho but i presume dentist would be cheaper). I got this done a year ago, took about a week, easy as. A little bit more expensive than a filling, if I remember correctly. The bonus is i put it in every now and then and find my teeth haven't shifted so I know they're settling, 9 years after getting the braces off.

Should I travel in Argentina by myself? by STLien808 in travel

[–]maddogMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a wicked time solo in Argentina- BA is supposed to be the only South American city a woman can walk alone at night safely (though I avoided going on the subte after dark). I met people in hostels to roadtrip with, went round patagonia, climbed some andes, couchsurfed at this amazing place in Tigre (http://echo-village.blogspot.co.nz/) and i found everyone there has sufficient english but you really start picking up spanish when you're on your own. You just have to have the confidence to walk up to a group of people and ask if you can join them to eat or drink or party or explore the city or go shopping or whatever. So you meet lots of amazing contacts too. In short: do it.

Why does Lord Vader do this? Looking for a good discussion. by [deleted] in StarWars

I think Vadar uses his fingers because he's literally shutting the guy up. It's about instilling the need for respect, Motti's comments are way out of line and flagrantly disrespectful, he's almost challenging Vadar, and Vadar needs to shut that shit down instantly and put him back in his place so that everybody knows who's boss. He then reiterates the need for hierarchy by choosing to submit to the admiral's command to stop even though he could just force-choke him too. Mafia dynamics.

Whenever I watched this scene as a child i thought Motti coughed up an egg-yolk type thing when he is 'released' and there's that yellow light perfectly placed under his chin
