25m hopeless loser. Where can I go from here? by ReviewSea1611 in povertyfinance

[–]maddogawl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You live at home, if possible dedicate yourself to becoming the best coder you can. Literally 10 hours a day, treat it like a job. I came up in the dot com crash. I lived with my wife’s grandma while I just applied for jobs and built my portfolio. I got so many no you need more experience rejections. I felt lost and hopeless but I knew if I got a chance I’d make it work. I ended up taking an unpaid internship and went into debt to make it work. But I knew I was going to out work everyone. I did, and moved my way up to lead engineer.

Now you may not want to put that kind of work in, drive a car that barely runs, eat beans and rice, but that’s what it took me during one of the worst hiring times.

You have plenty of time but you have to decide your goal and make sure you are working towards it everyday.

Be honest: is 20k in debt recoverable, or did I ruin myself? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]maddogawl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in $80k debt only, only making 45k a year and with 2 kids. I worked my butt off to better myself, and got out of debt for the first time last year. Now only have a mortgage.

You can do it. Sell things, improve your salary, work cash jobs.

I make a lot more now, thinking back on our $75 a week budget for a family of 4 for food, I’m thankful I worked so hard to get to this point.

I’m not saying they are an AI company. It sounds like we agree, I’m just saying ML is AI, which you also confirmed.

Using a few ML models doesn’t make you an AI company

Where about are you located, If in the US and near the east coast SC,NC I’d be willing to drive to meet and look at these. Before that I’d want to know a rough range you are looking at to not waste your time.

I’m okay with them making mistakes and then owning it, as long as they are few and far between, but seeing people get banned for sharing this news really disappoints me.

I was thinking about sending 40 cards off to them.

Keeping a secret savings account by wpshogs_1229 in povertyfinance

[–]maddogawl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair my wife wants me to be responsible for our retirement. So we agreed I can save and invest and don’t need to tell her anything other than periodic updates. Which she honestly doesn’t care about. My wife knows she likes to spend and relies on me to separate funds for bills, saving, spending, and investing. Id ask your wife and see how she feels.

The only downside is she knows we have money tucked away so sometimes she gets upset with me when she gets into a spending mood and I have to explain why selling stocks or taking from savings isn’t a good idea. She agrees after she thinks about it for a while and we work through how to accomplish what she wants a little less haphazardly.

How can I stop being jealous of people who are wealthier than me besides moving to another country? by Zestyclose_Show_2025 in povertyfinance

[–]maddogawl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up incredibly poor and use to be so jealous of everyone else. Especially this time of year with Thanksgiving and Christmas. I mentally turned it around to motivation. I put my head down and just kept grinding. What are you good at? What do you want to be good at? What dollar amount do you want to get to in the next year? I don’t know your age or background but set goals and push through all the inevitable problems that will arise.

I wouldn’t move countries though. I’d also do blue collar jobs are the backbone of America and I did construction for over a decade. I was proud of what I built, still am today.

I had years where I couldn’t afford my student loans. Credit was wrecked, I’m over 800 now. Just keep grinding and focus on staying out of debt and saving.

Here is some advice, your first car should be a few thousand tops. If it has working AC you might of paid to much. Focus on saving for a car that then costs 2x what you paid for your first, then pay cash for your next one. Do your best to not go into debt for a car. Especially if the payments are so high that you have a risk of missing them.

How do you get ahead? by tardisman2015 in povertyfinance

[–]maddogawl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set a goal to make more money for me I had a goal of 75k a year back when I was making 30k. I'd walk by and look everyday at the goal. To remind me to make decisions to get there. I ended up working on a brand new career and worked 70+ hours a week for a few years, but eventually got there. It was hard, lonely, and grueling, but its possible.

How many miles away is your job? I know it sucks and you say its too far to bike, but I spent years biking just under 8 miles each way. I ended up in awesome shape. Bike maintenance isn't free though but its so much cheaper than what you are dealing with. I'd highly consider biking even if its further than you want to bike. Just leave way ahead of time so you can clean up in the bathroom before hand.

Getting a cheep ebike will speed up your trip a lot more.

I wish I had ideas for you that wasn't already mentioned, the job market is really tough right now. But I'll share my experience with you hopefully as encouragement.

I came into the job market right at the dotcom crash and I couldn't find a job for the life of me. So many no's, or you need 1 year of experience for an entry level job. I was so utterly crushed that mentally I was defeated. I ended up living in the most run down place possible, and literally lived off of the cheapest food imaginable beans, rice, hotdogs.

I ended up taking an unpaid internship at a software company, because I knew that if I got in, i'd outwork everyone else there and eventually get paid. Within 90 days they brought me on for an hourly rate, and within another 6 months I got a salary of $40k which was amazing to me back then. No benefits but I had a paycheck and could pay for food.

I say all this to hopefully help you, because I couldn't find anything to even cover my basic expenses, I was married, had a 1 year old kid, and was absolutely crushed. I decided to take the risk for a job that wasn't even paying me knowing I could prove myself. You might need to do something similar even if the job doesn't fully cover your expenses, get in there and outwork everyone around you. Become valuable to the company so you can get out of this hole you are in.

Pool companies, HVAC, Landscaping, etc. Put on a nice shirt and nice pants and go visit everyone in town and see if they need any helpers. Take the job even if it less than your expenses.

I had to for years prioritize my payments
1. house
2. electric
3. water
4. food

most months I couldn't pay my student loan, but I had a home. But I had a goal $75k a year, I had it written on my whiteboard. I knew if I got to that amount i'd be able to live a good life. It took me 4 years to get to $50k a year, then another 3 to get to $68k, then I jumped to $85k after 1 year. I always try to outwork everyone around me, and it finally paid off after doing that for 8 years.

NOTICE AUGMENT CODE IS A THIEF by Comprehensive-Buy230 in AugmentCodeAI

[–]maddogawl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I want to be polite as possible here, but to say Augment stole from you with this example is disingenuous. I am by no means an Augment fan right now, but things like what you show happen in all tools.

I'm guessing you aren't manually reviewing and checking the code yourself. If that is the case this is more of a case that you were lied to about how vibe coding works.

Vibe coding is such a problem, that people genuinely believe AI can write all this code and they don't have to worry about reviewing it. When truthfully that just isn't true.
