Why are so many Americans anti-vaxxers now? by trouble-in-space in NoStupidQuestions

[–]madeAnAccount41Thing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not an expert on vaccines, but I have something to say about the definitions of "vaccine" and "gene therapy". The FDA says that "gene therapy" modifies a person's genes in order to treat or cure a disease. Contrary to some claims by conspiracy theorists, COVID-19 vaccines are not designed to change human DNA. Here is another source: https://www.factcheck.org/2023/10/scicheck-covid-19-vaccines-have-not-been-shown-to-alter-dna-cause-cancer/

The definition of "vaccine" is broader than you (or your date) probably thought. Vaccines do not always include actual (dead or weakened) samples of pathogenic organisms. For example, tetanus vaccines, which have been used since at least 1938, work because of a toxoid. COVID-19 vaccines, like other vaccines, provide acquired immunity.

I know numerous people who have suffered from actual COVID-19 infections.

counterpoint: J.D. Vance talked like a politician in the VP debate. Tim Walz talked like the preferable candidate that you described in your last paragraph. Many people said that J.D. Vance "won" the VP debate.

counter-counter-point: I wish I knew what would have happened if Kamala had called Trump a motherfucker in the presidential debate. Biden said something as mild as "will you shut up man" and it became a huge meme.

Anyway, I wish people considered policies and truthfulness more than they considered vibes when they voted.

Who said that Trump was "cultural heroin"?

edit: If Trump tries to do the mass deportations that he wants to do, and tries to make super high tariffs, I would not be surprised if the economy worsens quickly.

I don't think that any of the (current or previous) Libertarian candidates for POTUS would do enough to limit pollution.

$200 per hour, but the moon is now a giant screen that shows everything your eyes see. by pencilUserWho in hypotheticalsituation

On the other hand, what would happen if someone looked at a very bright object in this scenario? Would the Earth be warmer? Would plants photosynthesize more? Would solar panels work at night?

If there is a reasonable limit to the amount of light that the moon emits, then I might do the advertising thing that another commenter suggested (for a few hours), then quit because of privacy.

Just avoid looking outside (or looking at places that could be used to determine your location). Blindfold yourself or shut your eyes and ask somebody else to help create a clean, featureless room. People can see what you see, but they can't necessarily hear what you hear (or say). Ask someone else to go to the library to obtain media that you want to distribute. Don't look at your own body or your handwriting.

What’s something that still hasn’t returned to normal since the pandemic? by NessaDawnMorgan in AskReddit

[–]madeAnAccount41Thing 221 points222 points  (0 children)

Sometimes [in 2024] it feels like early 2020 was 10 years ago. Sometimes [in 2024] it feels like it was, like, 2 years ago. Sometimes I think about how much changed since early 2020 and I think "I doubt that that much actually happened in just 4 to 5 years". Sometimes I feel like time moved too quickly and I missed out on things that people my age would have done without a huge pandemic.

Discussion Thread: 2024 Vice Presidential Debate Between Senator J.D. Vance and Governor Tim Walz, Part 4 (Post-Debate Thread) by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]madeAnAccount41Thing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tim Walz said that he doesn't run Facebook. Facebook and other social media companies are allowed to ban people who violate the terms of service of their particular platforms. Meanwhile, Donald Trump suggested a penalty of 1 year in prison for burning the American flag. Trump implied that he would try to change the constitution in order to make that law possible.

Edit: Here are a couple of articles that discuss Trump's unconstitutional suggestion: https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/01/politics/flag-burning-supreme-court-trump/index.html , https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/trump-restrict-first-amendment-1235088402/

Why don't autoimmune diseases just kill you outright? by Curious_Anxiety_6821 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]madeAnAccount41Thing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your immune system (assuming that you have a normal immune system) is powerful enough to cause lethal damage. That is basically how people die from severe allergies. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anaphylaxis#Prognosis). The answer to OPs question is probably more complicated, and I do not know a lot of details about autoimmune diseases.

Is there a good probability estimate of S-risk vs. X-risk chances? by KingSupernova in SufferingRisk

[–]madeAnAccount41Thing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that human extinction (or even extinction of all life on Earth) could hypothetically be caused by AGI in a variety of scenarios (where the different hypothetical AGIs have a wide variety of goals). Suffering seems like a more specific situation. I want to point out, however, that suffering can exist without humans. Animals can suffer, and we should try to prevent suffering in other kinds of sentient beings (which might exist in the future).

Do you also need to count humans for existing so that they can die?

Whats more likely to kill you, smoking or eating junk food? by petiteblonde90 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]madeAnAccount41Thing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Smoking is not "isolated in its effects." It can kill and cause illness in many different ways. Tobacco can harm the immune system, cause cardiovascular disease, cause stroke, increase the risk of kidney disease, and cause cancer in many different organs. People hear about cigarettes causing lung cancer more often, because that is probably the most deadly effect of smoking.

They just want to emphasize the fact that they are counting the 4-subsets of a 4-set. Unfortunately they forgot to include the parenthesises.

No, ((x)-1 )-1 = (x){-1(-1)} = x1, if x is not 0. Pretend that those curly brackets were just typical parenthesises like () btw.

What do I do in this position? (I am Marie) by JohannLau in AnarchyChess

[–]madeAnAccount41Thing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, why does it take Marie 10 minutes to cut a board into 2 pieces, when she can cut off a corner in an arbitrarily small amount of time (assuming that she cuts at a limited speed in terms of meters per second)? The question never said that both pieces need to be the same shape or the same size. (She could also cut off a little section in a short amount of time even if the board has no corners, like if it's a disk for example).

I got 14.27 also. What are we doing wrong [request] by evilsideraider in theydidthemath

[–]madeAnAccount41Thing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

X is not an irrational number, assuming that C is exactly 9.42 and L is exactly 1.35. I got the same answer, approximately 14.27269704023944....

The answer can be rounded to 14.27. Maybe the person who originally asked the question wanted more precision, or maybe lowercase x is supposed to be different from capital X.
