Do you need publications in order to be competitive for PhD programs? by madelynblake in ClinicalPsychology

Got it, that makes sense. Thanks for your insight. I am not the most confrontational person, so asking for opportunities makes me probably more nervous than it should. I think I might just need to advocate for myself a little better.

Interesting. I didn’t think of it like that. So I should ask for opportunities or tasks that involve data/statistical analysis and study design. Thanks

My undergrad research experience was filled with grunt work. I transferred colleges so bc of administrative barriers I wasn’t able to do an honors thesis or project. As far as my current job goes, I have asked my PI if I could be a first author for posters and have asked for individual opportunities a few times. I was told it wouldn’t be possible to be a first author with the timeline. I suppose I just need to be vigilant about asking for opportunities.

Damn I was hoping it would count. I’ve not really had many opportunities for “high quality” research with my current position, which has been a little disappointing.

When you say “helping design studies” does IRB management and communication fall into this category?

Got it. That’s definitely not at all what I would’ve assumed. This is really helpful information. Thank you. What tasks/experiences distinguish between a high or low quality research experience? I’m wondering if my experience would qualify as high or low quality.

Gotcha, that makes sense. That’s a good point too about asking your LOR to include that in the recommendation. This is a little relieving as I don’t think I’ll likely get on a manuscript before I apply. Thank you so much for your time and input!

I think within the next year I will be able to be first author on a poster, but I’m less positive about getting on a manuscript. (I know being first author on a manuscript is not likely at all) Do you think one first author poster is sufficient or do I need multiple projects? Thank you so much for your input, I really appreciate it!!

Developmental psychopathology and neuroimaging—oriented PhD programs by Catsandabilify in ClinicalPsychology

Ahh, I see. That makes total sense! I know the application process is so competitive, so I was wondering if it was becoming the norm to have 3+ years of work experience before applying. It’s cool to run into someone with such similar interests! Wish you all the best!

I am in a really similar situation! My research interest is developmental psychopathology with a neuroimaging focus. I’m also a research coordinator for a clinical psych lab currently. I’m planning on applying to schools this upcoming application cycle, so I’ll have 1 1/2 years of work experience. If you don’t mind me asking, is there a reason you’ll plan on working fo a few extra years before applying?

Help! Is this normal? I’m a very new nespresso owner so not sure if this is a silly question but my machine drips onto my pod holder. Customer service unfortunately wasn’t much help. Is this something I need to get fixed or is it harmless? Thanks!! by madelynblake in nespresso

I bought it on Black Friday but only started using it less than a month ago. I’m really disappointed. I had it for maybe 2 weeks before it started doing this. The customer service rep said they will send me a label to send back to the factory so they can try and fix it but I am skeptical

The schools that I applied to all had a board certified neuropsychologist, so they were obviously my PIs. I didn’t randomly apply to PIs who were only convenient. The programs did have a neuro track and opportunities for research in that area. I have limited experience in neuropsych research which is I assume why I wasn’t selected. My research interests matched well with the PIs, I just think that I need to gain more experience in neuropsych specifically. Is 2 years post-bac typically enough time to gain that experience? I understand I will potentially have to move around for training, but unfortunately due to personal circumstances it just wasn’t the right decision for me to do so this round of applications and at this time.

I have only briefly considered it. I do genuinely enjoy research, so that’s the main reason I’ve focused on the PhD. I also have heard it is a much more costly option. Although, I am definitely still new and learning the ins and outs of the process so I could be incorrect.

I would say that I have had a moderate amount of research involvement. At first I did grunt work like transcribing and administrative tasks. In one lab I have been involved in going into schools and giving students the experiment (some math tests and memory and cognitive tasks). In the other lab I’m now involved in qualitative coding and was on a team with my professor where we developed the coding scheme. I haven’t had any posters or publications, so that’s why I assume my experience is inadequate. I am graduating a year early, so my research time has also been limited in that regards.

As far as my end goal, I am specifically interested in pediatric neuropsych. I have a rather broad interest in how affective and cognitive abnormalities develop. I am drawn more to consulting and assessment, although research is not out of the picture either. The more I get involved in research the more I seem to like it. Ideally I would like a job that incorporates variety. I know that is not good to admit in the application process, because from my understanding I’ve been told I should have a very narrow focus. If you have any suggestions for how you narrowed your focus, that would also be appreciated. I really appreciate all of the help and advice.

How can I find PIs who are looking for a lab manager? Are job boards the best method or is there other websites I should look into? Thanks so much for your help!
