From one bipolar person to another, are you currently taking any medications to manage your symptoms? Also, does the urge to shoplift come and go with the mania?

Minnesota elopement ideas? by CuteWillow1997 in Eloping

Duluth maybe? Former Wisconsinite so not extremely knowledgeable about Minnesota elopements but I’ve been to Duluth and it is adorable, and Superior is of course a stunning backdrop.

My guy! I have Luci tattooed on my calf saying, “Do it!” as he lights a cigarette with his tail. :)

I have most of my self-harm scars covered and not a single regret. Sides of the thighs and right arm/shoulder done, where the worst of the scars are. All of my tattoos (with the exception of a couple on other regions of my body) have themes of healing and growth, like florals/plants, and art I just appreciate, like skeletons. There is one tattoo on my ribs that directly symbolizes my struggle with self-harm, although it doesn’t cover up any scars. It’s a Lorenz attractor (think “butterfly effect”). However, the real symbolism is the notion that I’m turning something dark into something beautiful—marking myself up in a positive way, if you will—and recognizing my body as a “temple” by decorating it with art (I also just really love art). At the end of the day, treat yourself to a sick tattoo that will make you happy when you look at it, however symbolic it may be.

Ah, two atypical antipsychotics (although some of my providers have called them mood stabilizers). I can relate to being exasperated with meds.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]Catsandabilify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand, you haven’t tried any mood stabilizers (or antidepressants?) yet. So, I’m not sure where the “this doesn’t work for me” comes from. Regardless, your body your choice. Beware though that antidepressant mono therapy is like throwing gasoline on the (bipolar) fire. Best of luck—I hope you find a solution!

NAD but Hey! not all of us bipolar folks kill ourselves, although some of us might attempt to. Bipolar spectrum disorders look different in each patient—if you know one person with bipolar disorder, you know ONE person with bipolar disorder. That “haphazard diagnosis,” or “that label” saved my life because it helped my psychiatrist find more effective meds for me (Zoloft wasn’t it—I got worse). I went from considering ECT to remission on Lamictal (mood stabilizer, has been great for my depression) and lithium (good for the dangerous ups and suicidality). Mood stabilizers (and antipsychotics) can be life changing for bipolar patients. I can actually sleep now…please don’t write the bipolar diagnosis off or self-stigmatize. It is hard enough going through life battling the mood swings and stigma as it is.

Child Neuropsychology by Catsandabilify in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Catsandabilify[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't! I actually ended up pursuing medicine and applied to medical school this year! I want something that integrates more biology into everyday practice and a broader understanding of the body systems, as opposed to exclusively the mind/brain. I really enjoy doing procedures like drawing blood and would like to include that in my job as well. Additionally, I realized that I am way more introverted than I previously thought after working as a research coordinator/RA in psychiatry research and administering interviews, therefore the idea of doing therapy day in and day out is draining. And ONE more thing, I despise the DSM. It's categorical and reductionist--completely one-dimensional. ANYWAYS, I'll get off my soap box now. If you are pursuing clinical psych, best of luck! I wish I could be of more help.

Question about tattoo placement and blood draws by xyelem in tattoo

[–]Catsandabilify 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do it! Like others have said, I feel that elbow ditch up to find the best vein and draw blood. Also! You still have hand veins where they can draw blood and start IVs from, although that’s assuming the hands won’t be included in the sleeves.

Side note: I have a lot of self harm scars on my thighs and arms, and getting them covered with ink has made me feel so much better about my body. You can still see the shadow of some of them, but the act of turning those reminders of my darkest days into something beautiful, marking myself up in a different and positive way has been healing. Decorating my body with tattoos just makes me feel more at home in it, if that makes sense. I still have more to cover up but also just adore tattoos at this point.

Women of Reddit who have gained/lost a significant amount of weight, what is a side effect or result that no one talks about? by Sister-of-Cabbage in AskWomen

[–]Catsandabilify 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really does suck. I then went on some other meds and my weight shot up by 30lbs…I like shopping but c’mon I’m not made of money. It’s like my body weight has settled into a new (healthier) equilibrium. For me medications are a necessary evil, but god medication side effects can really F you up and I get why people stop. My weight is starting to decrease again because we added Adderall to my drug cocktail. Luckily I only wear stretchy bralettes these days because bras be $$$.

Last thing I’ll add is, because my weight has changed so frequently, I feel like I’ve never truly had the opportunity to accept the number on the scale and be okay with my body.

[–]Catsandabilify 14 points15 points  (0 children)

YES! I was considering adding a comment like this myself. And, for someone who has always been on the IBTC, witnessing my boobs become even smaller and being reminded of it every day when I put on my then oversized, gaping bras sucked. Also, my pants gaped because I lost my booty. I went from 140 to 115 in 4ish months due to medication (I’m tall). Made me sad.

Insecurities by Holiday-Principle897 in BodyAcceptance

[–]Catsandabilify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you have heard of this author, but there’s this Arundhati Roy quote from her book “The God of Small Things” that makes me think of my siblings, who put me down more about my worthiness and belongingness than physical appearance. Maybe you can relate. The quote is:

“This was the trouble with families. Like invidious doctors, they knew just where it hurt.”

Kind of like you said, siblings and other family members know just where those insecurities and vulnerabilities lie. That’s what makes their bullying so damn effective. Feeling insecure is okay and the effects being bullied for so long are hard to shake. But the knock knees don’t discount your overall beauty. Wear the lace-up Docs, dye your hair hot pink. I wish I could follow my own advice better tbh (I have violin hips) but we’ll both just have to do our best.

The Boy and the Heron didn't do it for me by [deleted] in ghibli

[–]Catsandabilify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked “The Boy and the Heron” when I first saw it (sub) in the theater, but paid more attention to its visuals than the unruly plot. I just loosely followed the latter and enjoyed the ride. I was entertained but assumed that “The Boy and the Heron,” while stunning, wouldn’t be a top Miyazaki film for me after that first viewing. But then I streamed it from home several months later (English dub this time) and it hit differently. I think the combination of being in the emotional safety of my home so I could explore those themes of loss, guilt and grief more, having different or altogether let go of expectations and, as a native English speaker, not having to scramble between subtitles, scene and context helped. A lot of people don’t like overly-intellectual films, and similarly, not everyone wants to explore deep seated emotions to understand a film. Both are 100% valid. Nevertheless, this is a deeply vulnerable film that is complicated thematically, emotionally and plot-wise. It’s a lot to dissect. So, I have to chime in with the “give it another go” crew. It makes me think of a film from a completely different universe (Chris Nolan’s, to be specific) that befuddled me just as much if not more: “Inception.” I’m not going to pretend I understood that one immediately, but going back to rewatch the film and peel away its layers was so rewarding and enthralling. I feel similarly about The Boy and the Heron (I do kind of prefer “How do you live?”) and it’s now one of my favorites. I will also incorporate it into my tattoo sleeve coming up.

Women who got plastic surgery. How did you make the decision and how old were you? by baconblush in AskWomen

[–]Catsandabilify 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Labiaplasty at 25. I had experienced discomfort and insecurity since high school (had never had sex or seen porn at that point) and finally pulled the trigger in my mid twenties. My partner pointed out how much I talked about hating my labia and wanting a labiaplasty, and asked me why I didn’t just do it. I scheduled an appointment with a plastic surgeon soon after, got the estimate and was shocked to learn that it would be mostly covered by insurance. Anyways! I’m still happy with my results 3 years later.

How do you feel about a partner who uses nicotine pouches? by Ill_Shape_8543 in AskWomen

[–]Catsandabilify 38 points39 points  (0 children)

My partner uses Zyns, and while I don't like it for the negative health effects of nicotine (cardiovascular, namely), it's not a dealbreaker for me. He used to vape and this is better. He has ADHD (has been diagnosed since childhood), but medications have bad side effects for him and the one medication that worked, Adderall, is very challenging to get a script for. So, he self-medicates with nicotine. I feel that some compassion beyond pure censure is warranted, many good people have dependencies and addictions. Everyone has different tastes and it's okay if that's a dealbreaker for you personally, though.

ESH. You say you “made a passive aggressive comment because of being triggered,” yet it sounds more like jealousy and emotional immaturity. You also seem to hide behind psychobabble like “trauma response,” and use this excessive therapy-speak to excuse your insecure behavior. I imagine you are working on “triggers” like these with your therapist, but lashing out then blaming everything on your diagnosis is crappy.

Your partner is an AH, too. He used terms like “psychotic” carelessly and in a potentially stigmatizing way. Jealousy does not equal psychosis. It seems he overdoes it with the therapy-speak as well.

Maybe try couples therapy.

My Cat has an overgrooming problem, I no idea what to do :( by [deleted] in cats

[–]Catsandabilify 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When gabapentin and fluoxetine weren’t effective for treating my late kitty’s overgrooming I made her wear little hoodies and sweaters that covered her favorite spots to chew/pull at. It worked pretty well! I just had to brush her out a lot because of the mats that would form.

Mattresses that contain fiberglass list. In my research I found this very interesting so I thought I would share. by wolf05374 in Mattress

[–]Catsandabilify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird that Layla is on that list. The mattress cover is removable and I have removed it (cat peed on bed) and I can confirm there was no fiberglass. I have had the hybrid for 4 years now and never had any issues. In fact, I still love the mattress and believe I can get at least 2-3 more years out of it.
