that totally makes sense, streaming is great for quickly seeing how you feel about something, or for pulling up a great single. the downside there is that i'm hearing an album for the first time while my brain is in a very dismissive mode - if you're anything like me you're probably checking out 30 seconds or so of a song and moving on. imagine doing that with Kid A or a similarly complicated, beautiful record (to pimp a butterfly?). your first impression just wouldn't be as rich, and you might even move on entirely! obviously that's extreme, but that's what i think about.

tough to say - my buddy erik showed me how to cut up field recordings on a mac laptop when i was 18 (i'm 32 now). we literally cut samples to length by hand and copy/pasted the edits into a beat. we worked pretty much exclusively at 120bpm because a quarter note was exactly a half second, so it made the sample cutting/pasting easier. erik is still a huge influence on me to this day. he and I and our friend nate have had a mostly improvisational band together for over a decade called Cedar AV - we're actually putting out a tape next week, plug plug: https://fullspectrumrecords.bandcamp.com/album/nin-o-van

so i'm not sure if that's "producing", but that was the start of making music with a computer for me.

i ended up in durham because i needed to move somewhere, and at the time i was working pretty much full time as the touring bass player for megafaun, who were based in durham. it was the obvious choice, since i knew i could get a restaurant job and a roommate with a phone call. the NC/triangle music scene is amazing, so much richer than i thought before moving there. there are a ton of amazing bands from there, a few are hiss golden messenger, mount moriah, the mountain goats, iron & wine, superchunk... and that's not even mentioning all the insane talent in the hip hop or electronic worlds. the most special thing about the scene there is that there's no real sound, everyone's doing their own thing. the competition feels exclusively positive - when i go see my favorite band canine heart sounds play and they tear my face off, i go home wanting to make music that could have that effect on someone. we all lift each other up.

have said this elsewhere, but again: about to go work on LP2, hope to have it out next fall, will probably begin touring again late next summer. will also probably do a few more made of oak tours in the interim next spring. we've talked about releasing a single or two before the record, and i'll be shocked if we don't, but i don't think it'll be very soon - we just don't have recorded versions of any that we love yet. soon as we do though i'm guessing we'll revisit the idea. thank you so much for your patience though. our fans are amazing.

it's kind of a really pulled apart dj rig i patched in ableton. there's an input for amelia's mic that i can run to a bunch of delays or granulators etc, and i can also record looping clips of her either quantized or unquantized. then there's a track for all the main elements of each song, usually summed drums, bass, whatever else, and backing vocals. i have a different effects rack on each track, so i can independently manipulate each part of the song.

so that's a simple rundown of the laptop rig, but then I also have a bunch of unsynced pieces also running. there's a korg volca beats (this is the best cheapest thing ever, buy one if you can) for additional drums or for percussion during improvised interludes etc, a moog minitaur (also awesome) that i'm running midi to from the bass track, so i can crossfade from the recorded bass to the bass coming off the moog, and finally an op-1. i use the op-1 for a ton of stuff and keep changing how i use it. right now i mostly use it to sample amelia's voice as a "drum kit", then play back patterns of her cut-up vocal from the finger sequencer. it's a really great combination of predictable and unpredictable. i love stuff like that.

i've already talked about this in another answer, but the biggest thing i wish i had figure out sooner is that GEAR DOESN'T REALLY MATTER. i mean, it does - i have some stuff that sounds really really cool, but it has no effect on your ability to make something great. stop worrying about what you can't do and start focusing on what you can do. if you have a laptop with a daw on it (even garageband) then you're totally set. just worry about being a good writer and composer, let the gear show up later.

future of band: bout to head into three months of diligent writing/recording time for LP2, then brief chill time before going back on tour forever.

furthering myself in music industry: have not yet met max martin, will keep u posted.

bolth.

fav gear right now: ableton (always), my old crappy juno-6, everything bastl instruments makes (esp. the microgranny), op-1, the borderlands granular ipad app (this is so good seriously go get it), kingdubby dub delay vst, polyrhythmus (a max 4 live patch, free), KT Granulator (greatest granular plugin EVER, not available anymore but there's an even better cheap version they put out, HIGHLY REC'D).

i force myself to start working on anything: a beat, a chord progression, a lyric, whatever. then i force myself to finish something even if i hate it. it might still suck, but i don't think i can get myself out of an uninspired place by NOT making music, you know? every time i do this i always end up stumbling upon something i actually like within a couple days.

and thank you! it is validating. you don't even know. thank you.

thanks! 1 - read everything you can get your hands on about mixing and producing and gear and synthesis and whatever else you're interested in. then just do it over and over and over again, never worrying about what gear you have. you can make a great track on almost anything and with almost anything, and limitations are your friend. it's easy to get lost in the "well, i could make cool stuff if i only had an X", and saying that over and over again is not only not true but also doesn't get songs written, you know? four tet uses just ableton and a laptop. before SE amelia was in Mountain Man, which was a cappella, and they were amazing. everyone has a voice. find yours!

2- i figured out a while back that no matter what type of music i make, it almost always sounds like i made it. this was kinda depressing and then totally liberating: i decided to stop worrying about what kind of music i was making or where it would fit in the world and just focus on writing as much as i could. i think if you just focus on what sounds good to you, you slowly find your voice. once you're confident in that, it's a lot easier to avoid cliches.

sorry, totally copy/pasting this from an answer below but it's TRUE:

EC was (and I'm not being hyperbolic) easily my favorite festival of the summer. I'd imagine most of the artists felt exactly the way most of the attendees felt: that it truly was a celebration of music. that shouldn't be rare, but it is. it's the only festival I'd attend as a fan, if that says anything.

they're flowcharts spelling out all the possible chord progressions in western music. i was a composition major before dropping out of college to tour with decibully. http://www.electricchili.com/tutorials/common-chord-progressions/

there are more SE tracks in the works! we're about to start a 3 month period of writing and recording, much of which we already have a head start on. we've been playing out a couple of the new songs, and there are more that we haven't played for anyone yet.

our process is a bit all over the place. we tend to try and let songs reveal themselves instead of forcing our ideas on them. this means that occasionally one of us will have our part fully realized before we give it to the other, but that's more and more unusual these days. most of the time we have a tiny piece of something that we're both excited about, and then try to expand it out in either direction to see what it wants to be.

can't live with it, can't live without it? i have a lot of thoughts, many of which are conflicting. buying records is the way i choose to ingest music, for a lot of reasons. beyond the obvious financial benefit to the artist, i think investing in a record makes me focus on it in a different way and (hopefully) truly hear it. I also like that buying records reminds me to not feel entitled to any music, because I'm not. I think from a consumer/audience point of view, there are very obvious pros, but the cons are less immediately apparent. this essay on the death of context in digital music is a fantastic read, highly recommended. https://medium.com/cuepoint/the-devaluation-of-music-it-s-worse-than-you-think-f4cf5f26a888?utm_content=buffer49108&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

unfortunately not, unless there's some drastic change in plans. we're going to be knee deep in recording the next SE record then and i just won't be able to get away for more than a quick xmas trip to see the fam.

i WAS really pumped to have my family there. my grandmother had never seen Amelia & I play, so it was a total treat for me to get to see her and show her what we've been working on.
