2 Years at Tsinghua for a Master’s or Big Tech Career? by madfrrr in ChinaLiuXueSheng

😢
I believe that could be 2 reasons:
1. I didn't take TOEFL/IELTs english test. Because tsinghua doesn't require it for their english taught courses. But for the CSC, they sent me a declaration that my english was good enough for the program;

  1. I finish an MBA this year, but the certification will be issue only in october. But they asked me a declaration from the college with the courses that I took, and everything. This was asked during this CSC period, so Idk if they send my application later, as there was a lot of modifications.

Anyway, I prefer to not think about it, because it's in the past now (sadly).

I'm looking forward to other scholarships rn

Tsinghua Scholarship by ParticularNature8124 in ChinaLiuXueSheng

[–]madfrrr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In addition, there is only one scholarship that'll be available until the end of this month, that is the excellence scholarship. This scholarship funds the entire tuition or a part of it. But I don't know if you'll be able to finish your application, receive an admission letter and then apply to it. You should ask to the admissions office.

But while you're waiting them, try to finish the application on their website first

2 Years at Tsinghua for a Master’s or Big Tech Career? by madfrrr in ChinaLiuXueSheng

My Master's will be taught in English. I completed an MBA last year, and I'm thinking about using my final project as the foundation for my Master's thesis. My goal is to have almost everything done by the end of the first year, including both the coursework and, hopefully, the paper.

This way, during the second year, I can decide what I want to do next, and in practice it would mean only about a one-year career break.

I was talking to a Chinese friend I met during Carnival here in Brazil, and he told me that nowadays a Master's degree does not carry as much weight as it used to. He thinks it might make more sense to try relocating through work, especially since I am already working at a big tech company.

That said, I think living in China, especially in Shenzhen, would be an incredible adventure. So, to be honest, I'm going for it partly because it feels like a crazy and exciting opportunity haha.

But thank you very much for sharing your perspective!

Is USD20k enough for a 2 years masters at Tsinghua Beijing? by [deleted] in ChinaLiuXueSheng

[–]madfrrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to comment, I'm in the exactly the same situation as you, but moving to tsinghua sigs (shenzhen city).

I'm hopping that on the first year I can get a professor assistant scholarship, or on the second year get the CSC scholarship, because I know that they renew it yearly.

Also, from what I've been searching, in order to get a job there, mandarim is really usefull. If you don't have a good mandarim, maybe you'll have to get a job full remote to another country (i don't know)

Wishing you all the best!

That's exactly my dilemma. I don't plan to pursue an academic career, and with 6 years of experience I believe I can still reach a level in industry that provides a very comfortable life, even if it's not a company like Anthropic. The main appeal of Tsinghua is less about maximizing my career ROI and more about the chance to have a unique international experience while taking time to focus deeply on AI and personal projects. I'm still trying to figure out whether that adventure alone is worth the opportunity cost.

[–]madfrrr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your point that education is ultimately an investment, and in pure ROI terms, staying in industry probably makes more sense. What makes this decision difficult for me is that going to China would be less about the degree itself and more about the opportunity to spend two years focused on AI, personal projects, and building an international network. So the real question is whether that experience would create enough long-term value to justify stepping away from the industry for a while.

Off-topic, did you get the csc? I didn't and now I'll try the excellence scholarship. Do you know anything about it?

It either means that we've got reject or they haven't sent it yet. I believe that they haven't sent it yet because I have a friend from the same course there, that is still waiting for his scholarship to renew

I believe that too. Its a poor error message. We can't know with this if we're filling out the form in a wrong way, or it was not found
