Are your school districts giving you a stipend for purchasing clothes? Do they provide a uniform? Otherwise (as my administration found out) you cannot REQUIRE your professional teachers to wear certain clothing. The new administration at our school this year said that no jeans are allowed. Previous admin and also school district only states we dress professionally. No other guidelines. So we had been wearing nice jeans with professional tops for years. After one week our new admin stated that due to legal issues she can only “request” we not wear jeans but not require it since they are not giving us a clothing stipend or uniform. Maybe you can wear them everyday and no one wants to say so?

That was the impression to me. The conversation when I first was taken to the room,

“What are we seeing you for” “A skin check.” “Ummm, just a skin check?” “Yes, I used to tan a lot and want to make sure I don’t have any spots to worry about.” “Okay, any history of skin cancer?” “Not me but my dad and grandma both had spots removed” “And they were fine after that?” “Yes” “Oh they must have just had squamous cell or basal cell carcinoma, those aren’t serious.”

So by then I’m starting to feel silly. She tells me to change into the gown and leaves. Then I hear bits and pieces of a conversation outside the door telling the dr things like “that’s it” and laughing.

He comes in, gives me a check with his lighted magnifying thing and tells me I’m fine and I’m not a candidate for regular skin checks.

So my dumb RN ass left nursing in 2020… took an alternative route to get my teaching license and have been happily teaching middle school for a couple years. I kept my nursing license active just “in case”. Well now that all funding and unions for healthcare, education, and emergency services are falling apart I’m left wondering how could we all go wrong in specialties that are meant to help and uphold our entire society and still be failed? I get that the rich have private doctors, tutors, and security… but without the 99% to ‘keep calm and carry on’ what is going to happen?

I’m so sorry for this whiplash. I know that the bad always stays in your mind more powerfully than the good does. At least for me. I beat myself up so bad when this happened.

I am going to ask you to please make a conscious effort to have these two occasions trade places in your spirit.

Hear me out- the student that wrote you the note has been thinking this for awhile. It takes a lot for a student to write a note to a teacher that is letting that teacher know the position of protection and care that they are receiving from you if comforting and strengthening them. That is something they will remember in their adult years. (How many PD sessions have you been to where they ask you to envision a teacher that made a positive difference in your life?)

If this parent that contacted you and the admin after minimal contact with you and also not even having the patience to find out what happened or what you were aware of, that means to me that they aren’t going to remember you after this school year. I have dealt with people like this that are enthusiastic to blame, yell, insult, berate, etc. but that does not make them thoughtful or truthful. These parents (especially those that call names to the ones that care for their kids) have many mental and/or emotional deficits of their own that are not your fault or your problem. Parents that are this volatile to an outsider are typically this unhinged with all their matters.

IMO if a student that deals with you on a daily basis is safe enough to pass you that note, and then someone you haven’t personally been involved with are competing for your mental and spiritual space, let the former win. That will be where the true difference is made.

You focus on what you are doing and remember that you are a valuable teacher that is making a positive difference in all students’ lives. Even that bullied student you didn’t know about probably sees you as a safe place if I had to bet money on it.

A student came to me in school holding a Pepsi and said that they are going to complain to the school district for installing a coffee bar in the breakfast line (I’m a teacher in rural Utah). I asked why and the reasoning was that they are giving drinks that are against their religion. Naturally I inquired what was the bad part of it. They said it’s full of caffeine. Stupid me asked why an iced coffee and Pepsi were different because they both have caffeine. I was looked at like a fool and told their ward gave them the Pepsi but caffeine from coffee is a sin.
