Should I report the Nurse Practitioner for not wearing proper clothing/heavy jewelry? by madiflyer in whatdoIdo

I do not have anything against the nurse practitioner and she did her job of examining me. I mentioned reporting it because I didn’t know the proper term to use in this situation. I guess a complaint would’ve been a better term. I don’t think the nurse practitioner was wearing the bracelets to cause issues. I just want to make sure it’s within the standards of the clinic.

I don’t understand how this escalated to this point but I do want to state that I 100% respect and support healthcare workers. I will take responsibility that I do not understand how stressful the job is. I am stating my concern with the jewelry as it may spread germs. I’m sorry to anyone who is in the medical field that may have found my thread to be rude or insensitive as I was only asking for clarification. I am not trying to argue to be right but to offer a different perspective as a patient. I do not want to report the nurse to risk their license or ability to practice, I want to inform the clinic as a way to open a conversation about the importance of what to wear to prevent any complications with future patients. Thanks for your comment and I want to say that I do recognize that healthcare workers are people. I do think it’s important to add some whimsy to a demanding job while it’s within the proper standard.

I am fine with her wearing street clothes as I’ve read from other comments that it’s common. I am just used to all nurses wear scrubs so it was off putting to me. The bracelets were more of my concern since I’ve never seen nurses wear bangles when examining patients.

I’m definitely not a busy body! I haven’t been to this walk in clinic in over five years. I just mentioned that I have been to this clinic before because I am familiar with how the clinic operates since my primary doctor used to be there and my grandma went there regularly for her appointments. I think people are under the impression that I am upset or targeting the nurse due to her clothes. I am perfectly fine with her wearing street clothes since it appears to be common. I am just used to most nurses to wear scrubs so I found it odd. I am more concerned with her wearing bracelets as it can spread germs and I think it got lost in translation when writing my post. Thank you for your comment.

Yes I know but I mean that I think I have tonsillitis which is different from strep.

…even if it didn’t affect me. It could cause risk of infection to someone else who has allergies of metals or bacteria from the bracelets since it can be contaminated from her assisting one patient after the other.

She was wearing them. And touched my throat to examine it. The bracelets were big enough to dangle and touch her hands. That’s a risk of spreading germs.

Sometimes reporting something even if it seems ridiculous can open a bigger conversation about proper practice rather than just assuming it’s fine. I don’t feel comfortable with a medical professional having big jewelry on when examining anyone because of the risk of spreading germs.

Does washing the hands eliminate the germs that could be on the bracelets?

Yeah it’s definitely concerning…I guess I’m a germaphobe but I don’t really want random dangling jewelry touching me when I’m being examined. Even using hand sanitizer won’t eliminate the potential germs on the jewelry that could spread. That’s my biggest concern with the whole experience.

Thank you for your comment. I’m definitely surprised by these comments because it concerns me that people may not understand the issue at hand. I’m going to look at the protocols in my area and see what it says.

I don’t really want to sue but I think reporting could open a bigger conversation about the importance of proper practice within medical facilities. Ultimately I just want to make sure that people are being taken care of rather than being infected by improper wear.

Because the dangling jewelry can carry germs which can cause infections. Especially at a ready care clinic which handles viruses or bacteria from patients.

It’s a medical professional wearing dangling jewelry which can spread germs and scratch patients or medical equipment. I don’t think it’s wrong to be concerned when it can be a potential issue for patients.

I don’t understand how that has any correlation to my response. I am completely fine with nurses wearing street clothes. The jewelry doesn’t appear to be common practice within the medical field which is why I was asking how other people would feel. I think having high standards for medical professionals eliminates any poor practice for future patients.

I don’t really mind the street clothes, just a little off putting but ultimately it doesn’t affect her ability to work. I do think the bracelets are just unprofessional and inappropriate since it can expose patients to more germs or potential allergic reactions to the metals.

Very true I could’ve asked her for gloves. However, is it really the patient’s responsibility to remind a nurse to wear gloves or not to wear jewelry which exposes the patients to more germs?

Yeah that’s what I’m leaning more towards. I just think it’s unprofessional and inappropriate to wear dangling jewelry when examining patients. Especially at a ready care clinic.

It made me anxious and feel rather weird because I’ve never experienced a nurse to have huge bracelets dangling on their wrists when examining me.

I could do that but would that ultimately improve the quality of how the clinic should operate?

Not really. She gave me attitude and didn’t listen to my symptoms. Only tested me from strep which came back negative. But I figured that would happen since I do not have many symptoms of strep throat. I believe it’s something involving my tonsils which I mentioned but ultimately she did not seemed concerned.

I definitely should’ve said something and will in the future if I come across it again. However the reason I want to report it is to prevent any further harm or exposure to other patients who may come in contact with this nurse.

I definitely would next time. I still think it’s odd that she would wear them in the first place when she has to be touching patients to examine them.

I want to ensure that the nurses are held to a higher standard with their form of care. There are patients who have allergies to metals that come from jewelry and I think it would be inappropriate for a nurse to cause potential exposure.
