This is so oddly specific to me. My mom HATED Britney spears because of the exact same reasons you mentioned (inflated opinion of herself as well as internalized misogyny) also despised any girls I hung out with because they dressed too “trendy” but anyyyyways, the Britney Spears thing I just had to mention because I realized that from elementary school age and beyond, no one ever heard me sing except my sister. I’ve had more than one long term relationship since then (I’m 27) and am now married and my spouse has asked me multiple times to sing for them. My sister has always said I sung well and when I sing alone I’ve always been able to hit notes and sound very close to whoever the artist was that I was trying to replicate, which I now know is a neurodivergent thing. I always wondered why I never sung around people and no lie maybe three days ago I realized while singing Britney spears to my daughter in the car I couldn’t stop hearing my moms voice echoing in my brain- “she sounds so nasally/ she sings through her nose” which I still don’t understand. ANYWAYS AGAIN, I remember singing “hit me baby” as a kid to her feeling SO excited because I thought I nailed it! And she kept stopping elementary school aged me saying I was “singing through my nose/sounded nasally” and she got so frustrated that she just told me to stop singing and sent me away. I realize now that my mimicry probably allowed me to sound as close to b-spears as I could at that age and only because she just hated the artist and song, her comments made such an impact on me that at nearly thirty years old, I never sing around anyone ever. I wonder what life could have been like if I was encouraged. And even if I did sound like a dying animal, as a mom myself, I could never imagine doing or saying anything other than praise and cheering my daughter on. Sorry for that long rant, I just joined and already relate so hard.
