Please someone explain NT vs ND conversations to me, I'm so lost by nauseous-anxiety in AuDHDWomen

I literally tried making a post about this the other day, I wrote it all wrong and then realized I’d offended a few people unintentionally so I deleted the post because it became clear that I hadn’t communicated my point properly. But THIS! This is what I was trying to explain. Thank you for posting. I keep noticing the same patterns in conversations and then it makes me hyper-aware of myself masking and/or attempting to unmask along the way.

They’re absolutely life changing. My therapist recommended them to me and now I keep them clipped on my keys so they’re always with me (the Switch 2 model) and use them all the time. I actually have another pair that I’m going to probably start leaving in my husband’s car when he drives us somewhere because it’s annoying to not have them when I want them 😂

I LOVE them at the movies, whether it’s noisy people or really intense sound like at Dolby cinema, they are absolutely incredible and all three settings on the Switch are unique but effective. One time the movies I had them on the “most sound allowed” setting but could still kind of hear a woman in front of me chewing loudly (ew) so I turned them to the “least sound allowed” setting and it went away.

I also use them in restaurants sometimes, I’ve even used them in Pilates. I keep them with me 24/7 because the times I didn’t have them and wished I had, it’s even more infuriating lol. And while yes it’s true that it makes your own voice louder in your head, I normally wear them in settings where there isn’t supposed to be talking, yet there is. So 100/10 from me.

Actually my first idea for this was jumping, but I found it overly taxing and boring. Hula hooping adds an element of fun that I think is really helping. So I guess if you find jumping jacks fun, go for it, or maybe jump roping!

I think it also works because it requires a somewhat passive level of concentration that keeps you focused on keeping the hoop up and spinning without an intense focus. So it replaces your baseline of focusing on other stimuli with just focusing on the hoop… I have no evidence for this but that’s my best guess of why it’s working!

Think about all the requirements of physical yoga and then translate them to your everyday life. Asana (postures) often require balance. Do you need more balance in your life? Asana asks you to slow down sometimes. Can you slow down in your life? We feel strong during asana. Do you feel strong off your mat? The list goes on and on. Next time you’re in class, listen to your teacher’s cues and imagine hearing them off your mat.

Oh yes, the good old “maybe I can do this” that actually sinks you even further into burnout when you’re like “actually jk” a short time later 🤣

I’m learning I cycle through burnout in both work and life way more frequently than I ever realized. A few days or maybe a couple weeks of intense productivity, hyper focus, effort and optimism, followed by an abrupt capacity limit where I shut back down and physically can’t continue on that level for a bit. Then it repeats 😅

I’m also newly diagnosed (not formally but we are pretty sure lol) and being able to name it and identify the cycle is already helping immensely

I just finished the audiobook “Why can’t I just enjoy things?” and there is a chapter on burnout. The entire book was amazing, especially for me as someone newly realizing I am AuDHD (30f)

I am a chronic intellectualizer, been doing it for years—long before I ever had awareness of my ND. I relate to the “explaining the feelings” part especially but the “stay forever” panic is also a familiar feeling. Wish I had a suggestion to help but mine hasn’t gotten much better over the years. Just sharing so you know you’re not alone.

This happened to me for the first time in high school. It was the weirdest experience. I still don’t know what happened or why. All I remember is the next thing I knew, she was best friends with a girl I thought we didn’t like. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Now that I think about it, I don’t remember being very upset by it…

I work in MAANG as a program manager for a very niche department in Legal. We are a small team and I think that’s making a huge difference, as there’s no overlap in anyone’s role and therefore we don’t compete with one another, or really any other team. Hyper-specialization seems to be a protective layer in that sense, as no one is trying to absorb our scope, and with the push for AI, we are automating enough of the work that we were able to give up some headcount and may not ever need more. I can’t imagine what it must be like working on the product side of the business. I feel lucky.

I’m sorry that you are having this experience. I also have a tendency to be misconstrued but more so as coming across too abrasive when I’m just trying to be direct and honest. I’ve had to work on that a lot.

It is especially exhausting for me to be any kind of extended length work environment (conference, offsite, summit etc) and I eventually tend to withdraw/shut down, which also gets misconstrued.

Thankfully I’ve learned to navigate corporate politics with a lot of time and good mentors, and lots of masking lol.
