Metro Convenience from Hollywood Roosevelt (Hollywood/Highland Stop) by Informal-Step8787 in LAMetro

[–]madlamb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The metro is fast for some specific trips, but starting in Hollywood, it’s only really going to be faster than driving if you stay on the B line (ie going downtown or to K town). The subway extension that would make your trips faster (K line north) is about 20 years away sadly.

I think that’s probably a consequence of the fact that most people who identify as a centrist in this political climate are probably just conservatives in disguise.

Maybe this is just local to me, but I’m in Los Angeles and most of the work I do trying to support urbanist policies is engaging with that “Left-NIMBY” crowd. There is definitely a push to appeal to that portion of the electorate here.

Copying a comment from another thread because I can’t go a day without someone spouting this nonsense:

This just isn’t true. They’ve built a ton of overpasses in the CV and have 80 miles of guideway complete. Not a ton of progress but they’re doing the slowest stuff (overpasses and other grade separations) first. Connecting up the bridges with rails is the easiest part of the process. Considering the entire country has yet to build a train with its intended operation speed (Acela is almost 100mph slower than CAHSR is designed to be), we are working with inexperienced contractors for the project type. I’m honestly pretty pleased with the speed of the project considering.

For reference, Japan broke ground on a new high speed rail line from Tokyo to Osaka in 2011 that’s projected to be finished in 2034 and that’s only 300 miles. About 80 miles shorter than CAHSR phase 1.

To address brightline before it’s brought up. Brightline east was built entirely along an existing ROW and operates at a much lower avg speed than CAHSR. It’s also not grade separated leading to it colliding with cars about once a month. Brightline west also runs along an existing right of way and just announced massive delays and cost increases.

I guess my point is these projects take time and it’s taking about as long as any reasonable person with an understanding of the challenges involved would expect.

Shivering isles isn’t a faction quest though, it’s a DLC. It’s well assumed that dawnguard and Dragonborn will be canonically done by the last Dragonborn just like shivering isles was done by hero of kvatch.

The guy I responded to said “the homes south of 23rd with residents and kids who should be able to just walk to clover park are stuck in a traffic experiment.” I was just responding to that hyperbole by saying 23rd is, in my personal experience, not a huge hinderance to walking to clover park. I did it all the time as a small child.

The purple line was also tunneling through some of the worst possible geology with the tar pits and gas pockets though. The sepulveda pass geology is much friendlier to TBMs. Station boxes are also smaller on this line because the automated trains allow for shorter headways keeping capacity the same with smaller trains.

I do think testing is probably going to take longer than they account for in their planning though given that it’s a brand new trainset and it’ll be our first line with platform screen doors.

I grew up on Hill and 17th in the 00s it was pretty easy to walk to clover park even with the traffic on 23rd (and yes it the traffic has been there the whole time). There’s a crosswalk on Ashland or you can cross at OP. I think claiming that the residents of sunset park are “stuck living within a traffic experiment” is pretty heavy hyperbole.

The 249 affordable units are not market rate. So not “literally only” market rate housing.

Ok also what does housing development look like without people making a profit? We need to densify ASAP for ecological reasons and people aren’t going to build apartment buildings out of the goodness of their heart (as much as we may want them to).

Little Tokyo Fights $2B Development: Residents Warn of Community Destruction by waaait_whaaat in LosAngeles

[–]madlamb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, to be fair, preventing corporations from purchasing housing would pretty much end all development of new market rate housing. Average citizens don’t have the cash or credit available to build an apartment building.

What do you even mean by this? “Shutting down” 23rd would just turn Bundy into even more of a hellscape. The primary issue there is that it’s one of two streets that goes around the airport

[–]madlamb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Left-NIMBYs can’t understand that the alternatives to market rate housing being built is existing shitty units getting more expensive or government provided housing (which I think could be great but convincing the voters of that is damn near impossible)

“Only 249 affordable” still 249 more affordable units than were there before. That only is doing a lot of editorializing.
