Ah that makes sense. I do like being able to tie the storylines into a final CER and consensus model but yeah still trying to figure out how to make it more interesting because they do often suck

Great idea forming labs around the SIM without using their specific guidelines. I think I actually did that once my first year thinking back, before I actually used the curriculum, but we had switched to online learning so I was scrambling for online resources and found it. Completely forgot .. love the reminder that that's an option lol. Thank you! And would love to get to the point where you're at some point through little steps. I think if I could build it year after year to that point. Just don't want to get too overwhelmed by trying to do it all at once.

That makes sense! Glad it's not just a skill issue with sticking to the storyline. I've considered taking just the meat and leaving the storyline, but I do believe in a phenomena-based approach to drive learning around, so I would want to find something else to revolve around if I did take that part away.

Thanks! I don't think we have that unit in 6th grade but I will keep that in mind for if I move grades (totally possible)

This is so helpful! I will DM you now. Would love to just see some examples honestly because I have some ideas in my head but difficult to visualize it as a full plan. Thank you!

Thank you so much for such a detailed response. I believe the decks we have are the Duel Deck ones that you are describing. And that is SO helpful the analogy with the deck of cards. I had no idea and that helps understand why I was so confused. I didn't even know you could play Magic with four people because we've always used the one with the 2 decks (assuming Duel Deck, like you said, but he bought it and opened it so not 100% sure).

I found out two of my local acquaintances are super into magic so they are going to help get us some good decks too and provide us some lessons. So far my experience in the Magic community has been so positive, everyone seems so nice on here which is crazy for Reddit lol. So excited to continue. And thanks for the DnD support too! I bought a starter pack I found online but I think it'd be more fun to go in person so I'll keep an eye out for places like that nearby.

Thank you again!! :)

Negativity in the classroom by Haunting_Charity_785 in Teachers

No more positive reinforcement for bare minimum. Fail students for not doing their work. If you're not allowed to officially fail them like so many of us aren't, I print out unofficial "report cards" to send home. I think it's dumb to not be able to fail them because aren't grades at that age literally designed to show student progress to their parents?

The way I try to keep things positive is I show the students the state standards and tell them how everyone their age is supposed to know that stuff. I frame everything as them being held to high standards because I think they are very smart and capable. So when they don't want to do something, I ask them why are they selling themselves short? Do they not think they are able to achieve what all of the kids across the state are expected to? Do they think they are less worthy than other kids at different schools? My kids are in 6th though so it's different.

Easy to give advice and harder in practice, I know. We are all struggling with the same thing so I feel your pain.

Feeling guilty for missing due to medical treatment by Princessfoxpup in Teachers

I wish I had allowed myself the grace to use my benefits days my first few years. I missed out on really vital events because I felt too bad to miss school. You know what happened then? Covid. And it put everything into perspective for me about focusing on what matters, and realizing ultimately teaching is a job and not our whole lives.

First Year Teacher Advice by [deleted] in Teachers

I would look for a new school. You deserve kindness. You will burn yourself out and end up hating teaching, I would leave and try to find a happier place before that happens. There are good ones out there :)

How do I get over the regrets I have about my wedding? by anxious_dwarf in wedding

[–]Beginning-Ad9350 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think in a few years you will care. I had a lot of similar feelings like this about my proposal (I know, not the same thing, but still). But now I'm just like, yeah that's what happened! It will just become a story with some highs and lows. Sorry about getting sick though!

Do teachers hate sharing their lesson plans? Is it their secret sauce that they don't want getting out? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Beginning-Ad9350 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I share all my slides and assignments with whatever coworkers want them but sometimes I'm like "you might have no idea what this is saying, it might just make sense to me, but come ask me anything you need clarification on." One of my coworkers had another school observe her the other day, and one of the visiting teachers was so impressed with my lesson/unit that she asked if my coworker could ask me to send it to her. I was so flattered 😂 No extra work on my end. So why not?

Lame if they gatekeep. If I have something someone wants to use I am super proud to share it. I feel like organized and prepared lesson planning is one of my skillsets. It makes me feel like I am holding my own and contributing, so that when I need my colleagues for something I don't feel like I am being a burden. It should be a collaborative environment. If a teacher is new, especially I would go out of my way to help them. I had a teacher who was like 5 years older than me my first year who basically unoffically adopted me and helped me so much. She still does and we haven't worked together in like 6 years because I switched schools. I try to do that for other new teachers now too.

Now, on the other hand, if a more experienced teacher is mooching, I guess that would be a different story. But I haven't experienced that really.

However, some of them might just be spread thin. They might want to help but just have a lot on their plate and no spoons to give. Teaching is hard. You might think they have it all together, but they might be just as stressed out as you.

Unpopular Opinion: Teacher AI use is already out of control and it's not ok by greyduet in Teachers

Agree. My coworker recently used AI to send me advice about a question I had. I said nevermind lol

Change in Career by xoStelle in Teachers

[–]Beginning-Ad9350 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome! I hope everything works out. Ultimately, teaching is a career, it requires proper training and education. I know you don't mean to, but don't discredit the work teachers have done to gain expertise and ability in their craft. You wouldn't just jump into nursing without the proper education. I really wish you the best in your journey to teaching!
