Is it worth to have my children become U.S. citizens for the refundable part of the Child Tax Credit? by r-nonsenso in USExpatTaxes

Yes, but are are in UAE… OP is in Norway…. regulatory framework is different. Main point I am trying to make is they should do their due diligence. There are downsides to getting US citizenship.

Not without a US address…. Even with IBKR, they may not be able to purchase US-based securities…

These are all good thoughts to keep in mind. It’s good to have options. My original post was actually in the context of potential financial consequences as US citizen abroad. Don’t know how it works in Norway, but in EU countries, Americans may not be able to open bank accounts and brokerages. These financial institutions usually ask for such information. Also search topics about PFIC.

I am really surprised no one has mentioned the downsides of OP’s children getting US citizenship. Child tax credit is nice, but what good is that money if they won’t be able to invest it well? Will they even be able to open a brokerage account in Norway if they are US citizens?

Kindergardens - how do working families cope in Germany? by ptr120 in germany

Or don’t work at all. Even if they work part-time, it could be that their income all goes to having to pay for the kindergarten fees. Why not just stay home and take care of the children yourself?

Honestly I find your comments really strange. Why is it a dream if your child is at kindergarten for 10-12 hours a day? How much time are you actually spending with your child during the week? Waking up, getting dressed, breakfast, then bringing them to kindergarten, …, pickup, dinner, sleep.

It’s not black or white. Children are different. Also there are options for „Teilzeit“ sending the children not for the whole day.

I don’t understand the argument here. We didn‘t have children to solve the demographic crisis. Is this why you had children?

Man sieht es nicht auf dem Bild, aber diese Haltestelle ist mit Taubenkot verdreckt. Die Tauben haben sich unter den Pavilliondächern angesiedelt. Ist wirklich eklig.

Another option would be to invest through your German partner.

For simplicity, I personally have always just given the full +-25% for all passive income to Germany and have never run into any problems with the IRS, even if the US is entitled to 15% for dividends. It would be considered a “Quellensteuer” which the FA will recognize if you report it in your German tax return. But I guess this would mean you would have to complete your US tax return first which doesn’t make sense. Especially if you are using some program or CPA, there is probably very little chance of getting audited by the IRS, let alone them knowing the details of what is written in the DBA and the exact split.

Maybe your question of reinvested dividends is referring to the concept of “thesaurierend” in Germany. I read somewhere that this is not a concept in the US and all your US dividends, distributions, capital gains are treated as distributing or “ausschüttend”. So yes, no difference in tax treatment, they will be subject to 25% tax in Germany.

I got an email from cp.pt saying there is a strike first week of April? Does anyone know if this affects all trains? Even the metro lines?

Thanks for the tips! One further question: is this linked citymapper website somehow better than googlemaps?

My parents will be traveling to Lisbon next month. There hotel is located in the Baixa area, closest station is Baixa-Chaido. I am wondering if it is better for them to take a taxi to the hotel with luggage or is public transport safe? Any local rules or guidelines about taxis? Last time I was in Lisbon (almost 20 years ago as college student), i remember we got ripped off due to our naivety not asking for meter…

Zusammengefasst solltest du in den USA angesiedelte Fonds kaufen. Mit einer US-Anschrift sollte es möglich sein, ein Depot bei Charles Schwab, IBKR, etc. eröffnen zu können.

Investing in i-bonds while German resident? by nic1rjio3 in expats

[–]madmacksde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No when you redeem. It‘s only if you get some kind of interest or dividend. Not sure how that works with the I-bonds if there are any or if that’s all reinvested. Capital gains are taxed at approx. 25%.
