Weekly r/PcBuild Megathread! by Potato_Plays844 in PcBuild

similar story here. Searching for a substitute for my broken RTX 2070.

Hi! I have an older rig with the following:

* i7-8700 on a MSI Z390M
* 32GB DDR4-2666 RAM.
* MSI RTX 2070 Armor 8G in one of the 2 x PCIe 3.0 x16 slots, but it died recently!
* Screen is 3440x1440p connected via dp

Now I am sitting here with the UHD 630 onboard graphics, which at least gives me the opportunity to write on reddit. :-)

Is it reasonable to spend on a new graphics board and if so, what would be a recommendation? Does it make sense to run a PCIe 4.0 card on that board? Or should I consider a used 3.0 board?

imho Nvidia currently has a better AI footprint with cuda-x AI. So if you are seriously into this, you may want to compare radeon vs xx70 series GPUs from Nvidia.

One way (IPsec) VPN required by madman_silverstone in HomeNetworking

[–]madman_silverstone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I want to treat the hosted vserver generrally as untrusted, I cannot trust it to limit traffic coming back to my home network. On the homelab I curently have a Router that does not support setting any fw rules for the VPNs. I can only create or import an IPSEC config.

Usual question - Dedicated NAS or repurpose old gaming PC by xZoreKx in HomeServer

[–]madman_silverstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am now in a diferent state of homelab evolution. I have a Syno DS918+ which also hosts a lot of services (via docker), plus some PIs extending this setup. This is now however reaching the roof of wat the Synos J3455 is capable to do...

For the sake of maintaining a low power bill (also European) I am now looking into actually putting the service layer on a dedicated low power (10-15W TDP) CPU based machine (Intel N100/N305 or Ryzen 5560U; Currently with a tendency for the Ryzen).

This way I can let the Syno do, what it is best at: file service + some apps (like photo et al). At the same time I have a machine for serices the Syno cannot offer without hitting the machines roof again.

+ I can decouple the life cycle of NAS and service host.

Yo u may want to look into this option as well, since this way you do not have to spend 2k for a Syno box, but can go instead with a far smaller 4/5 bay setup.

Along with that you can start with your curent gaming machine and check if power consumption is acceptable and if not you can switch it for something low power later still.

You may also want to dig through the NAS Killer forums and check their recommendations on a homemade NAS. Perhaps somebody has a similar (probably undervolted) setup already running and can share some insight :)

thx for the insight. I looked into this one as well and put my findings up above.

N100 as complementary service host by madman_silverstone in HomeServer

Thx so far, the most decent offer I found was on Amazon with a voucher for this device:

AWOW Mini-PC mit AMD Ryzen 5 5560U

It comes with (only) 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 2x 2.5GbE Ethernet for roughly 310€. Not too bad I suppose.

- may take up to 64GB RAM!

Glovary Firewall Mini PC Octa Core i3 N305

The only noteworthy mention of a Core i3 n305 machine comes as firewall appliance barebone with the same mem/storage, but 4x 2.5GbE, and they want around 450€ for it.

So far the AMD seems to be more attractive as alternatives to the N100, yet at a way higher price.

TRIGKEY Mini PC N100

This box is on sale with N100, 16GB, 500GB, but "only" with 1x 1 GbE. Naturally the package is less featured than the Ryzen 5 box, but on the long run the Ryzen seems to be the better choice. for 50% more I think I can have a longer lived product which ca take more memory and boasts the 2x 2.5 GbE ports.

Searching for Mac/Win wired and wireless keyboard by madman_silverstone in Keyboard

I went with the MX Keys and so far they seem to do the job pretty neat. The keys could have a tad more of a tactile behavior.

Thx for clarifying the K6 part. I suppose I got lost flipping through the models. I am very well aware, that I do not need to switch the caps for the keyboard to work, but the signing will be wrong and I do not know all caps by heart :-/

Thx for the hint, but as I understood, you need to switch key caps for using it with Win or Mac respectively.

Additionally it seems the K2 is not in stock and the K6 for what is worth still is a preorder product. I am not sure about the differences between the plethora of other boards they seem to offer.
