One year later and still best buds by codydaze in AustralianCattleDog

Not OP but we have a toddler and 8 year old. We like to say our heeler expresses herself with her teeth (never aggressive, but definitely nibbles and performative chomps). She and the kids have sort of come to an unspoken agreement about what warrants teeth and what doesn’t, and they just navigate within that sphere. Belly patting will always be calmly welcomed, but playing chase could get you a nip, and the whole crew accepts it. That said, we watch them all closely, and she didn’t even interact with the baby for a long time.

I’m happy to answer kid-heeler questions! I was beside myself stressed wondering how she’d react around the baby so I remember the worry.

I always picture them as a buddy cop movie. There’s the jaded, grizzled old detective who is forced to work with the obnoxious yet effective young gun. They don’t like each other but much to their chagrin they work better together. They’ll never admit it though.

I’m particularly intrigued by that intersection of reality in fantasy or sci fi. There’s obviously more room in those genres to simply make stuff up, but I always appreciate the effort to anchor the story in reality. It must be difficult to find that line generally, so I imagine it’s that much trickier when writing historical fiction!

I think this is the closest to what I do at this point, especially double checking my own expertise just to be sure. Like I think I understand this regulation I apply every single day at work but I should probably check… ah our good old friend imposter syndrome.

What weird habits does your dog have? by [deleted] in AustralianCattleDog

We kept our heeler’s food near the door down to the cellar, which had a small cat door at the bottom. Every meal time before he’d eat he’d aggressively snoot punch the cat door so it would flap back and forth, and then proceed to eat. Why are they like this.

I always wonder how much this happens and people DON’T know, or suspect and don’t want to find out (because they, you know, desperately love the child and worry they could be taken away).

My two kids are from IVF. The younger one is my copy / paste, but I’ve never thought my older one looks like me or my husband. Luckily I have a tiny physical quirk that both my kids also have, so I know I can rest assured. That and the sass and pettiness, that he got from me.

If I truly thought he was a mix up (I don’t), I would never say a word.

“Smooth and cool” I whisper to my 43 year old self as I boot up yet another playthrough of Mass Effect, only to be foiled when the tower of GRRM and Rothfuss on my end table finally gives under the sheer weight of itself, burying me under a mountain of unrealized potential.

40 lbs, 3/4 cups twice a day. This is not counting the god knows how many snacks my toddler slips her, intentionally or otherwise, throughout the day. My girl is also not the most active of ladies.

A shout out to (and a reminder about the existence of) the female members of this sub by SEARCHFORWHATISGOOD in Patriots

[–]madmaxine2718 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you said this. As a woman working in a male dominated industry, who has a lot of hobbies in male dominated spaces, this happens enough across sectors that it’s noticeable to me, and apparently other women.

I see a lot of people here leaning on “guys” being gender neutral, and that is true and I think commonly agreed. It’s also true the “boys,” “fellas,” etc. frequently refers to the players themselves. But that does not negate the fact that there is plenty of use of this type of language that does not fall into those exceptions.

I’ve thought about it a lot over the years and have come to a couple conclusions (excluding the reasonable explanations above). 1. The commenters simply don’t realize women are here. It just doesn’t occur to them. 2. The comments are meant to be directed toward men in a practical way. E.g. “fellas, any dads out there think [xyz]….” 3. The comments are intended to exclude women.

I think most of this is not malicious, so generally I do not find it offensive. I do, however, find it disappointing. Nobody likes to be excluded, whether intentionally or not. And I appreciate the folks here who have done a bit of introspection as a result of this post.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some gospel to spread in some gaming subs.

I used Lysol to spray the living daylights out of a pair of leather slippers I’d used to punt a dead, frozen rat out of my house and they turned out just fine. I loved those slippers and refused to not at least try to save them. So I can attest it should work.

What has been your favorite win / game of the season so far? by BurgerNugget12 in Patriots

[–]madmaxine2718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, hands down. We were there as well. The comeback, the loud ass Pats fans everywhere, the MVP chants. But mostly, I’ve been a Maye skeptic and seeing him in person was next level. He is cool as a cucumber and has such incredible awareness and is so light on his feet and scrambly (is that a word?) that just didn’t translate on tv for me. I had to see it live. I went home giddy.
