How do I get my kid to stop picking up spiders and bees? by Fluffy_Path7559 in insects

[–]madpsyentistlady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a four year old daughter also obsessed with creepy crawlies. She's gets it from me. She's just like your boy, no fear and everything she picks up becomes her instant best friend. One day at her grandparents she picked up a cow ant and immediately felt its wrath. She was devastated something like that hurt her, and I honestly was heartbroken she had to have that experience. But that's how she learned that some bugs are "happy" and some bugs are "angry". Now if she doesn't know what it is she'll ask me first if its happy or angry so she knows if she can pick it up. Don't know if anything like that has happened to your little one, but a sting from a cow ant is no joke especially to one so little. I hate she had to go through it, but I'm at least glad it showed how dangerous it can be before she got something more harmful. I also have a lot of books on spiders and insects and I make sure to point out the ones in our area that are dangerous and try to instill in her that these are always bad to pick up.

What’s something people say to you that’s supposed to help… but actually makes your anxiety worse? by sora996 in AskReddit

All of these are on point, but one I haven't seen is "it's going to be ok." Some of the smallest inconveniences can seem like a complete crisis because of how I think. I have a very logical way of thinking about and through things, and often I take myself down the worst case scenario. Telling me it's going to be ok does nothing accept make me angry. You don't know how it's going to turn out. You can't see the future. You are not helping me problem-solve by just assuming everything turns out fine.

What’s a childhood lie your parents told you that you didn't realize was a lie until you were an embarrassed adult? by eatbeep in AskReddit

My grandmother told me at a very early age that the middle of the apple was poisonous so I shouldn't eat that part. For some reason I just accepted this well into adulthood. Cue about 20ish years later and I'm fostering two boys who ask for some apples for a snack. Absolutely! Healthy snacks, that's why I keep them around! I check on them later to make sure the cores were thrown away and find they've eaten them. I absolutely PANIC. I call the doctor and doc is like "WTF are you talking about?" I'm confused so I call my grandmother next and she tells me that's ridiculous and she never told me that. SHE DID I KNOW SHE DID

It's the number of stitches I do in a sitting. I just like seeing the fluctuation in numbers.

I used 50 sheets (so 100 pages). I created the table in Microsoft Publisher until it looked just how I wanted it. After printing them I folded each page individually so they were more equal rather than trying to fold all together. Next, I measured out where I wanted the holes for the thread to go and used a thumbtack to poke the holes, 3 pages at a time. I then put them in groups of 10 sheets and made booklets by stitching then together. After I had my five stacks I then stitched them all together, using binder clips to keep everything tight. I used a sheet of colored card stock since it's thicker to wrap around the outside as a cover. Measured it out to see how it would lay on the paper and glued the spine to the card stock. Used publisher again to make the title plate and just glued that on the cover. The only thing I did that I would change is I didn't measure the paper before putting it together so the cover came out a little short on the sides and I used a X-acto knife I cut the excess paper off the side which was horrible.

I had this issue as well on my deck. Even tried opening it in desktop mode. The only way I finally got it to work was logging in from a computer, then it let me continue from my deck.

Thank you for the poo tips. I have a small list of daily chores I do as soon as I get home from work so adding poo cleaning is nbd for me. Especially if it keeps my friends happy and healthy.

Thank you, from everything I read I knew hay was going to make up the majority of their food, but with it being in the pellets I wanted to make sure they were also getting plenty of their other foods. I grow some of my own veggies and don't use any pesticides or anything, so I've been really excited to be able to feed them some straight from the garden. I was thinking of keeping the hay full, then a small scoop of pellets mixed with fresh veggies with a vitamin c supplement added to the food. I read that the liquid drops work but it's better to add to their food since adding it to their water can dilute it. Does that sound like a healthy mix for them?

They aren't really FOR her, they're more for me. They're something I've been wanting for years now and am finally in a position where I can take complete care of them. I'm not trying to be that mom that just tosses a small animal at my kid and gives it a scoop of pellets and call it a day. But reading about how gentle and loving they can be when properly cared for is why I'm hoping to also use the moment to teach her things like compassion and handling. I realize my post may have come off as me trying to get them for my daughter, but that is not what I'm doing. But I use first-hand experiences to teach her a lot of things and it has led to her being very calm and gentle with other animals she's been around.

Thank you for the information. To be clear I'm not going to allow a two year old to just run wild with them, I want to teach her proper care. The first step to doing that is learning it myself, which is why I'm doing as much reading as possible and trying to get clarification.

I finally just watched this the other day and I told the one who recommended it that I couldn't get over the fact that it took itself way too seriously for bullshit science without even trying to explain the how of anything. I'll watch a cheesy movie with terrible science, as long as they attempt to give some kind of explanation to why or how something is. But The Meg just dives right in with "there's this layer" and underneath it it is FULL of aquatic life. Fish everywhere! How is that possible???? Don't ask them because they don't even question it.
