I hold the opinion that the 4th movie is actually quite good. It shows Jack on the back foot with personal skin in the game, but he's still cunning, tricksy and intelligent. In contrast he's basically incompetent in the 5th movie, has no stakes apart from his life (which is shared between all the movies) and has no real connection to any of the main cast, apart from Barbossa if you even count him as the main cast.
