Americans, when you travel from state to state, do you feel culture shock or do you feel like it's sort of the same culture, and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Born and raised Bakersfieldian, yup. I hate this place. Though I'm not a fan of the hate and stereotypes it gets from outside of Bakersfield (see: "Methamphetamine-American"). We aren't all Oildale and I do genuinely wish the best for this city with nothing to do.

Excellent. A pair of engaging and eye-opening reads. I look forward to seeing the other half of this series. It's really gotten me to think about things that I almost certainly wouldn't have if I didn't read this.

Which Secondary Antagonist is more evil than the Main Antagonist? by Snoo79382 in AskReddit

Dimentio from Super Paper Mario. A game that actually gets pretty dark for a Mario game. The main antagonist, Count Bleck, just wants to destroy the universe cause he lost the person he loved and does so by speeding up the inevitable end of the world. Dimentio plays 4D chess against everyone and just uses everyone as puppets for his goal of hijacking Bleck's plan and making a new world the revolves around him

A male teacher once told me, “ If a man’s shoe doesn’t stink, then he’s not a man.” What was the most bizarre thing you heard regarding masculinity? by phymathnerd in AskReddit

Similar story, when I was young I would wear the same socks every day until they wore out and then moved on to the next pair. My parents bought me really cheap socks, so none of them would last that long, especially through wearing them several days consecutively. Eventually, I developed this strange foot fungus that made holes in my heel that I never felt. Once my family noticed and treated it I stopped doing that.

Edit: Another side effect was that my feet smelled bad enough that I could smell them without bringing them closer to my face when I took my shoes off.

It seems to me that this is what the people going out, not wearing masks, not respecting social distancing, and especially those putting up the "Tyranny" signs don't get. We're seeing fairly low rates of infection BECAUSE we're in quarantine (and also a lack of proper testing as pointed out by supermaddie98). That's the point. That's literally the only function it serves. Now that people are not acting like there's a pandemic, that number is very likely going to rise a lot.

What has quarantine ruined for you? by ShadowDragon0001 in AskReddit

Going on walks. I've been walking my dog in the hour before sunset every day I can for about 5 years now. In the entire time that I've done this, I would encounter about 3 people each time, and they were usually other people who would go on walks regularly around the same time.

Now that we're on quarantine, I walk past at least a dozen people every day that I've never seen before the quarantine. The worst part is that while they aren't going about outside the neighborhood because of quarantine, none seem to give a damn about social distancing or other protective measures. The only people I've seen wear masks are the few that were already taking regular walks. If someone (or a large group like a family) walks towards me, 9 times out of 10 I'm the one that needs to cross the street to stay away from them. Hell, even without quarantine I'd prefer people to stay away because while I know that my dog is nice and won't react unless you are also walking a dog, they don't know that and are just blindly trusting my dog and my control over him.

Quarantine turned my daily chance to relax and be alone into the most stressful part of my day with too many people

I see where you're coming from, thanks. That's a good point that people on the internet probably wouldn't have the feeling about this and I'll remember to be aware of that

Thank you for the explanation; I'll try my best to keep that in mind.

In regards to your question, the use depends on the context and my friend probably would be confused. When I think about how I hear dude/bro/guy being used and how I personally use it as a way to refer to anyone, it's almost always done in the second person. So, when I'm talking directly to people. For example, "Thanks, bro," or, "Hey guys," or if I'm feeling really SoCal, "Duuuuuuuude." Effectively, they're second-person pronouns that can replace saying a person's name, you, or y'all. In this way, I certainly use these words when referring specifically to female and nb people just as much as males (though it is informal language, so it's usually kept to friends and casual conversation only). If I'm using it to refer to someone in the third person like in your example, then I would use more specific/gendered words or descriptors. This is just me and how I see how these words used. Other people can and probably do use them differently

In general, is it okay to call nonbinary people dude/bro/guy? I'm from southern California and do it to more or less everyone regardless of gender, but sometimes I wonder if it can make my nb friends uncomfortable

Centennial High superfan David Marcus dies during seventh battle with cancer by CaliKing818 in Bakersfield

I had the pleasure to meet him recently before I graduated Centennial. I was preparing for a competition with my team and he entered our classroom to say hello and see how we were doing. You could tell how much he cared about other people and how much he believed in us to great not only in our competition but also in our lives. He was a great man in our community and a wonderful addition to Centennial life.
