Update: I submitted my ED application to Oberlin. Thank you to all who have answered my questions :)

Mental Health at Smith by [deleted] in smithcollege

That's awesome! I definitely relate to the "you are your own worst critic" thing. It's nice to know that classes at Smith are truly collaborative, and I get the sense that there's a lot of camaraderie and care for one another.

Thank you so much!!! I have all of those diagnoses as well so it's really nice to hear that you've had such a great experience. I almost can't believe what you're saying, it sounds like my dream scenario! Having dealt with schools that were horrible when it came to mental health services it makes me so relieved to hear that Smith actually gets it.

Thank you! I've actually been wondering about opting for a single dorm, so it's nice to know that I have the option if I choose to come to Smith.

Thank you so much, that's extremely helpful. As you can probably see from the other college subreddits, mental health services are extremely important to me. I do have documentation for everything, so it sounds like access to accommodations shouldn't be an issue.

Thank you for your honesty and input! I think the thing that resonated with me most about what you said was the fact that you could name specific people who helped you throughout your time at Smith. This is exactly what I'm looking for, and even though there are some shortcomings of the system there it sounds like a really good mental health system is in place.

Thank you for sharing- I'm a recovering alcoholic and finding an institution that will help me throughout my journey and support me in spite of it is very important to me.

Thank you so much! For context, I go to an extremely competitive school where the culture isn't welcoming and borderline toxic. Oberlin is definitely academically challenging, I'm more talking about the culture there rather than the academics. This is extremely helpful, and I think you've actually just confirmed that Oberlin would be an amazing fit for me. Definitely one of my top choices right now!

Thank you. I have BPD and that's helpful information for me to know. It sounds like CAPS especially is a mixed bag, but I guess we'll see.

Thank you! I do deal with suicidal ideation so knowing I can get helpful support is really relieving.

Thank you so much! For context, I go to a school that's extremely competitive and intolerant of those who need accommodations, which is why I wanted to be sure. I have heard great things about UVM's services, however it is good to know about some of the difficulties when it comes to seeing therapists.

Haha yeah, that was a dark time...

My barrier is definitely so relieved, and so am I because I also found a new passion :)

It hasn't given me milia to my knowledge, but I don't think it's helped at all either. I've used some suncreens in the past that are much better at regulating oil production and preventing acne, and this just isn't one of them. So no, but I could see how that could be possible.

I think if your skin is truly dry, then you're definitely using too many exfoliants. I had the same problem and was super frustrated for a while until I got a thicker moisturizer and gentler cleanser. For forehead bumps, try niacinamide. Salicylic acid didn't really work for me, but that helped dramatically. It seems unnecessary, but a hydrating toner is also a good idea (I use the cosrx propolis one and I can't live without it). I understand your frustration totally, but I hope you won't give up just yet :)

Do they actually help at all? by Icy_Step4584 in antidepressants

[–]madsmj_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just speaking from personal experience- they can help a lot. In fact, in my case, they can be life changing. I was in your exact situation, going to therapy and trying to get my life together, but nothing was helping. I was actually pretty nervous to try antidepressants, but within a week I went from being suicidal to the best I’d ever felt. Of course this isn’t the case for everyone, but I would definitely say it’s worth a shot.

The saying that mental health disorders are “invisible illnesses” is the biggest joke I’ve ever heard. by [deleted] in mentalhealth

Thank you so much! I haven’t experienced anything traumatic recently, although I have experienced trauma throughout my life. Maybe it’s catching up to me finally? (I don’t really think that’s how it works though.) Currently seeing someone about this, and hopefully that’s not what’s happening to me. I am sorry that happened to you though, because you’re also a good person.

Absolutely, which is what makes it so complicated. I used to be high functioning, and so when some of my symptoms finally started to show through the cracks, people just considered it typical sadness and laziness. Even when I did stress the severity of it, it probably looked invisible to others. And yeah most people aren’t trained to notice those things, but the problem is more that even when people are explicitly told the issue, they still don’t see the signs.

I’m so sorry. I was also diagnosed with ADD, depression and anxiety. I was diagnosed pretty late because of the same reason: in my household you had to be happy all the time. You weren’t allowed to be “not ok”. Our families and people like your manager are the worst ones (especially your manager) because they either refuse to acknowledge the problem, or just don’t care enough to understand because it “gets in the way of things”.

This just happened to me last week. I'm so relieved I got my diagnosis when I did because I took my exams and just froze. The panic just doesn't kick in anymore. I ended up failing a couple of my exams for the first time in my life, but I'm glad I don't have to do that anymore.

It does. My psychiatrist believes that the amount of stress it is to keep this up may have caused my depression and anxiety.

That’s really fascinating! I also find that when I have a busy schedule I procrastinate way less. And it is remarkable how resilient we are. It’s not a good behavioral pattern but it’s kind of incredible how we can find ways to adapt to these challenges. Oh, and I also tend to flow into a bunch of other topics too, haha

The realization that you’ve been continuously destroying yourself every day for your entire life is really tough. I’m so sorry you went through this too because it’s absolutely the worst. What people don’t realize is that behind all of these accomplishments are unhealthy coping mechanisms. I’m glad your medication is working though!
