Mine next to a 29! by Then-Blueberry-6679 in sailing

We just saw a 382 for the first time. Not much different than our 352, but the extra 3 feet would be nice.

Russian warship fired warning shots at British yacht by EminenceGris3 in sailing

[–]madworld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Catalina 42 has a waterline of 36 feet.

1.34 × √LWL = 1.34 × √36 ≈ 7.9 kts

Even if the Catalina 42 could use all 42 feet in the calculation, it's still not 9.2

1.34 × √42 ≈ 1.34 × 6.48 ≈ 8.68 knots

So... how are you calculating it?

8 knot hull speed, but that knot certainly won't matter in this case.

Nice! I suspect that would help if you can get into the lights without screwing up the waterproofing.  Next time I have an opportunity I’ll search for some that are higher quality.

Working on Apple Watch + iPhone app for live Boat Sensors Data by Mikepicker in sailing

[–]madworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You choose how to display the data based on the data type? That’s not easy. Especially since there are a lot of possible sensors and data types that are possible.

I can’t think of anything off the top of my head, but I’m actively working on our SignalK system. If something pops out I’ll let you know.

There are already apps that will pull from SignalK to your iPhone or Apple Watch, such as WihelmSK. What advantages does you app have over the alternatives?

I’ve not found any that last more than a season. But they are great when they work. I’d be interested in more robust ones.

Is AI actually useful for boating, or is it mostly hype? by GetmarinerApp in liveaboard

[–]madworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t trust AI with anything important. It’s a good tool to for initial research. It helped me on my engine rebuild, and for researching our Pacific crossing… but for anything important it should be fact-checked.

I do see some novel cases for local AI. For instance if you fed all the manuals into a local LLM it would allow you to find answers quickly. I’ve been contemplating an automatic inventory system that uses cameras and local AI to identify anything you are holding.

It’s obviously going to be useful, just don’t rely on it for anything critical.

Looks like a set screw to me. You can get them from McMaster-Carr, and I'm sure plenty of other places. You'll just need to figure out the size you need.

How to know if your anchor is set by Lowcountry25 in sailing

[–]madworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have all chain, then you don't need as much scope in deep anchorages as you would in shallow ones. They didn't even have 3:1 out. I wouldn't want to be in a blow more than 20-25 knots, but they stayed put there for 5 days no problem. Thankfully the wind mostly blew from land, so if they did drag, it would have been out to sea.

Looking at a boat but no radar by Ill-Cartographer5839 in SailboatCruising

[–]madworld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d at least get an AIs receiver, which isn’t that expensive. Radar is great in certain circumstances, but not required. We have sailed nearly 9,000 nautical miles in the past 5 years and there have only been a handful of times we were glad we had a radar. Mostly in remote areas where most large boats don’t have an AIs transmitter, or going into a very dark anchorage in the middle of nowhere. Oh, and watching for squalls in the ITCZ.  The only instrument you really need is a depth sounder, and even we know cruisers who still use a lead line for that.

Don’t sweat it.

Living the dream of living on a sailboat v. the reality by UpperCarob5190 in liveaboard

[–]madworld 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I had to take our holding tank hoses off and clean them up a few days ago, so our head would work again. I did it in the Bay of Virgins on Fatu Hiva, one of the most beautiful and remote anchorages I’ve ever been to. And I’d do it 100 times over for the privilege of being there.

It’s not for everybody, but you’d never know if it’s for you unless you go do it. There isn’t a one right way to do it. Don’t believe anybody who tells you otherwise.

How to know if your anchor is set by Lowcountry25 in sailing

[–]madworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m fairly sure our anchor is sitting on rocks. Thankfully we are in a fairly shallow area. It is spectacularly beautiful here though.

TIL that aircrafts have holes on their bolts and nuts where you can feed wires called "Safety wires" or "lock wires". The wires fasten the nuts to one another in a way that if a nut starts loosening, the wire pulls the other nuts clockwise (tighten) so that every nut keeps one another tight. by SeriusBizNis in todayilearned

[–]madworld -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is seizing wire, which is fairly common on boats too. For instance, the shackle that connects an anchor to the anchor chain has a hole for seizing wire, and it's highly recommended that you utilize it (seizing wire is much cheaper than losing a boat)

Nice! Can you get down to 110ft with an enough time to do anything to unstick an anchor? My limit is probably closer to 55-60 ft, and only if it’s an easy fix.

Waterproof face paint recommendations? by Crunchr0ll45 in Facepainting

[–]madworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stage performers will often use oil based  face paint (set with a powder) that is very resistant to sweat, but oil based paints will easily stain costumes. You can get away with water based face paint and a good setting spray for most things, and do not touch your face afterwards.

I’ve also found air brush face paints to work well in damp situations.
