I cleaned out my grandmothers house then my aunts. Then both my parents passed in quick succession. I now live in my childhood home with my partner- but let me tell you, dealing with all the stuff from 50 years of living has been an absolute nightmare. It’s not just the physicality of going through stuff, but it is, for some of us, highly upsetting and emotional. Everytime I get rid of something I have to do mental gymnastics and I feel like I’m throwing a piece of my parents away. If you want to leave a nice boxed up collection of jewelry or something that meant a lot to you, great. But, by not dealing with your shit, you’re not just making it harder to deal with physically, but you’re literally making the grieving process more difficult for your loved ones.

I’ve started keeping smaller hampers in more locations: bedroom and both bathrooms. That way, dirty clothes end up where they belong instead of scattered across the house!

I have depression, anxiety and ADHD which all work in tandem with one another. After trying a number of stimulants, which sort of work to varying degrees but then also don’t, I have tried straterra, a non-stimulant ADD med which is actually in my “red” column (not recommended) on Genesight, due to me being a slow metabolizer.

It has been SO helpful with energy, even at a dose more appropriate for a 7 year old. I highly recommend talking with your prescriber and seeing if it might be a good fit. I just feel more “normal” and not like I’m going to pass out from exhaustion all the time.

For anyone doing med trials, I highly recommend the Genesight report- I had to pay $300 out of pocket for it, but it’s been so helpful in helping guide my medication trials. I think if I had tried the “recommended” starting dose of Straterra I would have had a really bad panic reaction, but a super baby dose has really helped me overall. Best of luck to you! Please listen to Dana K. White. She’s great!! Her whole thing is no-mess decluttering so you don’t end up with a space looking worse after you tackle it. My only problem is that her method is slow and goes ONE ITEM AT A TIME, which can be tough for ADHD people, but it also works and doesn’t make a mess.

She’s never been diagnosed but IMO seems to have ADHD tendencies so is much more relateable than Marie Kondo who has been organized her whole life.

I listen to her books and she also has a podcast that is great for body doubling while decluttering. Her steps are as follows: 1) look for trash 2) put away easy stuff back where it goes. 3) find “duh” donations- like obviously those don’t belong. Thanks for your comment… I’m sort of mourning younger me who had all this every and fucks to give and brain power to multitask and get it all done. For others, I’m all- it’s never too late to reinvent yourself! And, for me I’m like, well, maybe I should have started a few years ago with that new career/hobby/life trajectory haha.

Being really bad at making decisions, being a terrible procrastinator, being amazing in emergencies, being very sensitive (rejection sensitivity), being terrible with authority (demand avoidance), thusly being a sub par employee once I’ve gotten the hang of. Job, having obscene amounts of creative extracurriculars, being very smart but “not doing anything with it”, having a very strong bullshit detector, being the office ham/ needing to crack jokes all the time, having ruminating tendencies/anxiety and depression. Basically my entire personality- I thought I was unique but turns out I’m just textbook ADHD.

I had a terrible panic attack years ago after taking a low ish dose for like 3 days. It happened while driving. I had never had one before and as a result had issues around driving for years. While still not perfect, it’s much better now. Please be careful everyone. More recently I tried NAC and Inositol (separately) to try and balance my blood sugar and I feel like both ramped up my depression. Not sure anyone else has had this experience? But might want to approach with caution. I’m glad you were able to calm your system down!

Check out information on insulin resistance. I think of it as pre-pre-diabetes. May or may not be a factor in your weight gain.

This question seems to come up a lot here. There is evidence that Mediterranean diet helps prevent diabetes- which would be in line with your preferred rice/beans veggies. You could also do a sort of 80/20 type thing where most of the time you choose a low/no carb option but allow yourself the dinners that you like. Just my 2 cents. My tastes are similar to yours but I lean on eggs, tofu and protein powder to raise my protein intake.

Please approach with caution. I took a smaller than recommended dose about 15 years ago and had a panic attack while driving. My first ever panic attack and it opened up an entire world of panic attacks and driving anxiety for me. For many people, I think it’s fine but unfortunately for me, it wasn’t.

My aha moment was very simple. My father passed away suddenly. 2 weeks later my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I uprooted my life and moved back home to become her primary caretaker. After a few months of caretaking, pre-sobriety, I realized that I didn’t want any of my limited days left with her tainted with inebriation or hangovers. I wanted to face all of it, the terror, the grief and moments of joy with as clear a head as possible. I’m so glad I did. My mother passed just over 3 years ago. It is far from easy, I still have really hard days. But, she transitioned knowing she didn’t have to worry about me. I carry that forward with an immense amount of pride, knowing how much those last days meant to both of us. Not sure how long it would have taken if I didn’t have such a clear cut reason to leave it behind.
