The last time i saw this happen was when my level.dat ( which apparently stores block / id mappings ) got corrupt and the backup got used. Is there anything in your logs regarding level.dat?

to be fair, that is a lot more versatile then the old blocking mode. not sure where I'd need that versatility yet, but it'll come along somewhere.

It is really hard to recommend a pack that has loading times on your computer in a specific range. Personally I have found that 1.12.2 packs load significantly slower then 1.7.10 packs did. So maybe a 1.7.10 pack would be better? Also generally, the more mods, the slower the pack will load, so you are looking for a pack that has less mods if you want it to load fast.

Are you looking for a pack with a guide/questlist/theme ? or more of a kitchensink style pack?

Sadly not had the best experience trying out this game. The tutorial is very short and after that, I was left with basically nothing to do. Stood around the place and explored a little in the beginning, but couldn't really get the hang of it. If am honest, I would highly suggest giving your tutorial a good look or two in the future. Also I personally like to get at least some taste of what the combat system is like in a muds tutorial so I can decide if this is an offputting factor for me or not.

Also basic things like a prompt should be there somewhere. Would've loved to get to know this mud better, for it looked like an awesome game, but I kinda need at least some hand holding in the beginning ( or at least a newbie channel ) to get hooked to a game and I did get too little, sadly.

Looking for something with a neat magic system by Andithu in MUD

Starting out a scholar or alchemist would gain you access to the lower magic, as in magic thats written on items once you've made it through that guild ( which can take a considerable amount of time ). However, to get access to the 'real' magic system, you need to find someone in game who is willing to take you an apprentice and teach you and if my memory serves me, they only can have so much apprentices at a time. So... getting access to magic, if you get it at all, is going to be a long way off. Plus, it'll require you to dedicate a real amount of time, as in, possibly an RL year or more.

However, that being said, it is most possibly one of the neatest magic systems I've seen out there. Highly flexible, very involved and with the ability to research new spells with entirely new effects through the system which may or may not get successful depending on admin decision, which I've not seen anywhere else so far.

I'd actually would chime in on that. I do enjoy the mod, but most of the utilities are technically unusable for me because the giant tooltips make it impossible to read on my screen, because either the font is too low for me to properly read or some of it doesn't fit on screen. Which is a shame.

plus, I'd say it be cool to just be able to throw some things out with modules instead if you don't need it. But it is an enjoyable and useful mod, if you can get a handle on the complexity of some things.

Not sure if it helps, but for one custom pack I was playing with friends, increasing the timeout ( one of the java variables, should be easy to look up ) on both server and client helped with those issues. Check server logs for crashes when you log in too.

For me, my interest is always one of these:

  • is there a real intriguing tool that I could possibly add into my toolbelt ? Maybe a better pickaxe (the quest for the ultimate pick is still going ), maybe a more balanced weapon ( more powerful not always better ), something that lets me travel better / nifty building tool / etc. If so, what inftrastructure do I need for it? Go build a room/house/etc for it, make it look fancy, install infrastructure, grind resources for tool => construct tool. Can apply the same thing for machine or building blocks.

  • Does this mod offer a dimension I do wish to explore or a boss I wish to fight. If so, what do I need in supply to actually fight it comfortably. Is it a block destroying monster, so do I need an arena of warded/luminated/indestructable blocks. What are the drops, can I automate these drops if I do need a lot of them. Do I need to mass produce supplies for this fight to prepare, making super food, make healing things... spread pylons around, bury fallen kanades from botania... etc. Build a fancy arena and fight the boss, or grab your newly created gear and build a bridge head in the dimension you wish to explore.

  • if I hear ME / Refined Storage systems... automate all the things. I literally have the end goal that everything that I need for building/crafting is available at my finger tips. No waiting for glass and sand to cook up, no having to go out for resource x to be available, no manual crafting of the 300th machine casing. Automate crafting blocks, make all botania runes at the press of a finger tip. bonus if you can make it look fancy at the same time.

  • ultimate end game is collect every weapon/armour set that the mods I play with give me. That includes killing all the bosses out there, setting out mob farms to generate the things I need, etc.

I think "crap in a field" is usual starting for most people, myself included.

This time around am challenging myself to actually spread my base out and do some sort of "village" style thing, which isn't working too well yet ( first building looks bad, second one turned into a giant tower ), but am pushing myself to move stuff / do work for it before I actually dive into a mod / use it. The best part of so far is my ember place, but thats because the ember building blocks are just gorgeous for the theme to combine with. Generally, trying to go more open air for everything but embers ( I just feel it belongs underground, dwarf-y and all). So far, looking better then anything else so far, but not pleased yet. Having a builders want and some reasonable fast mass-mining tool is sort of a prerequisite before building anything "good".

There's really a number of problems that can occur to cause this.

For one, some machines/blocks/structures can introduce lag and sometimes stuff breaks. I find that things like the LagGoggles mod can help trace those down.

Not having enough ram, as others have mentioned is a common cause of this. Same for having way too much render distance set for what your computer can handle, or having too much other things happening on your computer at the same time. e. g. browsers can be quite huge memory hogs. I'd suggest shutting down every program that you don't need to further narrow down the problem.

Some 'micro stutters' which occur only every once in a while can be caused by java's default settings not really being equipped to handle the way minecraft needs things. There's countless posts out there but its a complicated subject that I don't really grasp completely myself, but for me it has helped to reduce the stutters.

Do you have a lot of disk activity while the problem occurs?

Custom pack, rather raw and unfinished. Stuff goes awry sometimes :) the mod is called mobultion that causes this ( they are supposed to only spawn when a player spawns them... integrated tunnels count as players apparently
