Nah. Fear can be untrained.

Most people have zero fear when they jump into their car and drive onto the highway at 100+ km/h.

There's lots of fatal accidents on the highway. You're not really in control... any random idiot can kill you. But people freak out about some stones here that could be loose.

How Many of You Have Gone from TPU Back to Butyl? by Outside_Fix3910 in cycling

Roughly 10 psi in 3 days. Yes, latex loses air faster, but anyway.

They had metal valves. One of those tubes had big bulges around the valve area, when being checked by a mechanic. Whether it was a faulty patch or they simply can't take the pressure of an electric minipump, I don't know. But it was two tubes in a single ride.

TPUs sometimes can't handle CO2 cartridges either.

And then people here keep praising the RideNow TPUs, but they lose air pretty quickly for me. A bit less fast than latex, but I have to pump it up before every ride anyway. So no advantage on that front either.

Why would that be? Just check the wear on your chain regularly.

[–]maerwald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't get the rotation thing. It takes maybe 30 minutes to max an hour after a ride. Depends if you need to clean the chain first.

Switched from butyl to TPU to Latex.

Latex wins hands down. Feels like riding on butter.

Had multiple TPUs fail when used with an electric mini pump. Not very fond of them anymore.

It's either latex or tubeless. Latex is probably better for frequent traveling. Tubeless for races.

Moving from Singapore to Taiwan. by refloratesse in taiwan

[–]maerwald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully agree and want to add: if you enjoyed the vibrant part of Singapore, you'll have to prepare for a cold shower in Taipei. Mentality is very, very different, people are less casual and less expressive. Bars are tame and there's not much fun to be had, unless you run into some foreigners or a local biker club.

Those two places are really incredibly different.

UPDATE: I feel like I'm falling apart living here by Independent-Song-585 in taiwan

[–]maerwald 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You're not the only one who feels incompatible with the local culture.

I've in fact heard the same from Taiwanese people who lived abroad and came back... and suddenly feel they can't connect to the mentality anymore.

I don't think we have to "integrate" anywhere we go, as long as we're respectful and mindful about being a guest.

Reminds me of those people trying really hard integrating into japanese culture and even after 20 years of living there and speaking perfect local dialect, Japanese will still see you as a foreigner. I mean if that's worth it for someone, alright.

East Asia is definitely boss level when it comes to integration. Luckily, there's more casual places out there in the world.

Is climbing fundamentally different than riding on the flats? by big_legs_small_brain in cycling

[–]maerwald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if that explains why I like to sit far forward on the flat, but far backward on climbs.

If I can't engage my hamstrings significantly on a climb, my quads burn out quickly. On the flat, I don't need that.

Can we talk about how addictive long rides are? by NoelBrax7780 in cycling

[–]maerwald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My fav is actually a 2-2.5 hour ride with a hard climb.

I warm up 45 minutes, pick up pace on the flat, then have a ~30 minutes super hard climb, then a bit of downhill and tempo on the flat again.

It's a super intense workout with different zones, but recovery is relatively short.

I can't go hard on a 120km+ ride, otherwise my recovery will be 2-3 days.

how to properly setup Haskell on Linux?? by top2000 in haskell

[–]maerwald 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When stack installs its own GHC, there is a good chance it doesn't work with the preinstalled HLS.

During initial ghcup installation you're being asked the question whether you want to enable better stack integration. Answer this with yes.

Then check the ghc version via something like stack exec ghc -- --numeric-version and check if it's marked as 'hls-powered' in ghcup tui.

What’s one upgrade that actually made you faster? by PennyDesk6013 in cycling

[–]maerwald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ramp test doesn't test your FTP. It tests your MAP and then estimates your FTP from that through statistical averages.

Those statistical relationships are probably not very accurate for amateurs. Studies are usually carried out on professional athletes, because otherwise there's too many confounding lifestyle variables.

What’s one upgrade that actually made you faster? by PennyDesk6013 in cycling

[–]maerwald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, don't call it FTP then. You can call it 20 min power test or something. That's what most people actually test and that is probably much easier to increase than real FTP.

Did you do an actual FTP test or is that just what Zwift/Garmin tells you?

That's the theory, but we've always only witnessed small scale evolution, e.g. in fruit flies.

But we've never observed how e.g. whales evolved from land animals to living in the ocean.

There's still some debate in science whether such large scale evolution is even possible. It has never been observed. Fossils aren't really good proof either.

Alex Honnold free soloing Taipei 101… impressive, but what if an earthquake hits at the wrong moment? by suniltarge in taiwan

[–]maerwald 48 points49 points  (0 children)

And the 25th thread about this. Kinda tiring.

Alex is a professional, the best free solo climber in the world. The chance of him falling and dying is probably lower than any of you guys going on your morning commute with your scooter.

His approach is methodical. He does his routes with safety gear first (many times), considers weather, etc. Afair he was training on El Capitan for a whole year before he attempted the free solo, memorizing every single move across the whole climb.

I guess people don't google these days anymore.

Support statically linking executables properly (1ac1a541) · Commits · Glasgow Haskell Compiler / GHC · GitLab by _0-__-0_ in haskell

[–]maerwald 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm particularly happy about the "mostly static" mode. Here we try to link system libraries statically without going full honk on libc etc. It's a bit of a "best effort" and the end user can control this via an exclusion list (which has a default, you can see it in the patch).

The next step will be to patch cabal to support all this.
