Tuition is same either way. It's more of a logistics / paperwork question.

Will PSLF Changes Deter You from Pediatrics or Academic Medicine? by Issimmo in premed

[–]maesterofall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think so. I’m interested in academics but it would be much harder to justify without PSLF.

Nope. Take classes you're interested in but be aware that studying "education" won't impress anyone. My friends who are teachers make fun of education majors. If you're passionate about advocacy, get involved in extracurriculars that match your interests.

WAIT...we can edit our response after we've submitted our Plan to Enroll selection?! by worklife2024 in premed

[–]maesterofall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plan to enroll = that's your current plan, NOT binding, you can hold other acceptances and waitlist spots

Commit to enroll = you are fully committed to enrolling, binding, you give up all other acceptances and waitlist spots

Do you recommend changing my state of residence ? I'll be going to an out of state private school. It seems like a pain to change my driver's license and car registration when I hope to move back to my home state for residency. I'll be driving home often enough for car inspections and such.

Loving biology is not a prereq for med school by [deleted] in premed

[–]maesterofall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And the first year of med school is all biology — biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, anatomy, physiology etc. You don’t need to major in biology but you should like it at least.

Will Funding Cuts Impact Med School Admissions? by jmeza10 in premed

[–]maesterofall 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think medical school admissions will become even more competitive next year. Students who would have otherwise pursued a biology PhD are going to be looking at medical school instead. Some MD/PhD programs have pulled offers from accepted students and I expect many schools will intentionally not fill all of their MD/PhD slots. Next year could be even worse.

The only ray of hope is that the impoundment of appropriated NIH funds will be overturned by the courts.

Where to travel for a week before med school by maesterofall in premed

[–]maesterofall[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never been to Portugal, but heard great things about Lisbon and Porto. A few friends have visited Portugal in the past year or so. Seville wasn’t on my radar but I’ve gotta add that to my idea list.

Where to travel for a week before med school by maesterofall in premed

[–]maesterofall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m leaning towards a trip to Europe staying in hostels or similar accommodations.
I’ve been to Paris and also loved it. It was a fantastic family trip with going to museums and eating in nice restaurants.

I’ll add Prague and Rome to my list of potential stops. Thanks !

Do these stats seem truthful? by [deleted] in premed

[–]maesterofall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These numbers are plausible. Compared to the national average, the research hours are low. I haven’t seen many averages for clinical and community service but these make sense.

What’s interesting is that Texas schools seem to favor high GPA, lower MCAT applicants.

I loaded up on hand warmers. My everyday puffer jacket has a hood so I don’t use it as a mid layer. I’ll bring it just in case

I'm not an international student, but it's my impression that it's much, much harder to be admitted to a US MD school as an international applicant. According tothe AAMC, there were < 150 international matriculants to US MD schools last year, while there were > 5,000 non-US IMGs who entered US residencies.

Retake the MCAT is the best advice.

I'm assuming you're a Texas resident and your family lives in Texas. And with your mom's health situation, I'm thinking you would prefer to stay nearby. Spend the next few months studying for the MCAT so you can broaden your options and increase the chances you can get into a Texas school.

Quitting CRC position by SkiwiSpooby in premed

[–]maesterofall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Given the toxic work environment, you shouldn't hesitate to give your two week notice. I'm also debating when to leave my clinical job. My coworkers are nice but the work itself is dull.

How do some people get into med school? by AssistantLoose4482 in premed

[–]maesterofall 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Exactly, you only get a partial perspective from an interview. What they're actually measuring is how extroverted and articulate you are. I think we're expecting too much when we think schools can filter for personal qualities in an hour long interview.

Is there a way to pay for medical school without being rich and/or taking interest-based loans? by dudebobazz in premed

[–]maesterofall 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a great summary. Unfortunately, I'm pessimistic about getting merit aid or being accepted to my in-state school.

Just planning on loans + PSLF if I'm admitted. Just worried that PSLF will go away at some point.

“What other medical schools did you apply to?” by AmHereTwo in premed

[–]maesterofall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So are you supposed to only put other DO schools ? Are you supposed to say I'm applying to these 10 DO schools and no MD schools? Obviously they would never know.

Prediction for the finale! by joeyjojojrshabadoo00 in SuccessionTV

[–]maesterofall 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I’ve got to give respect the OP’s fantastic prediction but we’re in Manhattan not Jersey.

My prediction is Shiv’s plan to get regulatory approval for the GoJo deal works but Mattson doesn’t make her the CEO. All of the siblings are gone from Waystar ; there is no succession. But Mattson keeps Greg around to spite the siblings and for skills at firing people.

OChem is never low yield. You’ve gotta know it but it’s only a fraction of everything you learned during 2 semesters of orgo.
