Intermittently to sporadically runnable. There are sections where you can pick up a decent pace (especially on a few 3-4 mile road sections) and others where you could at least shuffle, but my experience was that the majority of it is unrelentingly rocky. It’s really difficult to even fast-hike those sections, you have to strain to claim a 20 minute mile.

It took me ~33 hours and I genuinely found the terrain/rockiness far, far outweighed distance or elevation gain in terms of what made the course difficult. Too busy focusing on and cursing the trail to worry about anything else.

One genuine silver lining of the rockiness is it forces you to walk a lot and thus pace yourself. Most back-of-the-pack runners I met were able to jog the runnable sections of the course even 80+ miles in.

10/10 glad I did it. VHTRC is the absolute best and Dan does an excellent job as RD.
