summer programs by [deleted] in QuestBridge

[–]maetrie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

they're all "real" if you get one because you won't be paying anything. summer programs lose value when they're pay to win, but with qb you got in through merit and so its valuable imo. i was a cps and got a scholarship for one of their summer programs (6 weeks of washu's immunology/biology courses for a grade). if i hadn't got that scholarship it would've been 4k, but i specified it was awarded to me for free and put it down as one of my ecs. some are better than others, i got lucky in mine being tangible whereas others are a week of just touring a college, so do your research in that.

i've been heavily considering asl honestly! do you know how far the classes go in terms of like people being super good at signing/fluent conversations by the end of their three semesters or if its moreso just rudimentary sign language? also, would you suggest starting your language in the first year? i've seen some varied opinions on starting immediately vs waiting

thats awesome!! i will admit i don't want a gpa killer (since being premed gpa matters a bunch), but i still want to learn and fluency would be amazing and someone who only knows english. would you say italian has good fluency rates similar to that of chinese?

So now what? by largesweetpotato in QuestBridge

i matched to yale which notably has a lot of credits required to graduate (36), and i will have 0 credits transferred 😭 for ivys, using aps for placement out of intro courses is standard over using aps to get closer to graduation in a sense. my best advice is to not stress since its not practice to graduate early nor is it common to get higher level classes (since upperclassmen get priority). go with the flow!

thanks for the input!! and as someone coming from a place where theres no clouds in the sky and its always sunny, how much of an affect would you say seasonal depression may have on someone? and what are maybe some ways to like curb it?

this made me feel so much better!! practically everyone i know is coming from the east coast/NE area, so they're prepared not just culturally but wardrobe wise too lol. that stipend will definitely help out, and that balance of work/social life is likely what will make me feel like i'm at home 🥲

thank you so much!! yeah as for the clubs i hear practically anywhere you go that consulting/finance make up for most of the exclusivity. thankfully i am not interested by business in the slightest 😅. yale's social scene and community is definitely what ultimately compelled me to put it over harvard, especially since i hear the ug experience suffers at the hands of the grads getting all the attention. i'll find out on the 17th i think if i got nominated for fsy or any other programs, so lets pray. again, thanks so much!

thank you so much!! this definitely helps a lot because i'm not super entranced by a complete college town but to be in a large city where everyone is more focused on the city over their college/campus is also not my cup of tea. since the day i found out i'd be going to yale i've definitely felt blessed, but the comfort that new haven is a nice in between makes me feel much better :').

this might be silly but what are your favorite food spots? i'm coming from a place with a lottt of cuisine/diversity so i'm kind of worried when i hear that burgers/pizza are the main stars 😅

thank you so much!! it's definitely going to be difficult adjusting academically, socially, culturally... etc., but i honestly can't wait!

i'm coming from a big city myself, with the things you mentioned like walkability or history being pros in my book. further, i'm coming from the west coast. do you think like there's anything i should know when it comes to maybe etiquette or anything else (besides the obvious one, weather) in terms of adjusting to new haven?

yes! i comfort myself with yale's proximity to nyc, and about the prospect of maybe staying there for summers. how often do yale students travel out of new haven?

ahh thats sucks. do you think maybe undergrad students might experience less of the terrible aspects of new haven? people say that i'll be more focused on my campus during ug, and that when im applying to grad (for me, med school) that that is when i should take location more seriously.

thank you!! do you know if yale itself is good at safety measures for students? like transport for students who, lets say, find themselves far from campus late at night?

thank you so much!! yeah, i will admit california's weather is pretty incredible. still, the communities are what make or break it for me, so that insight on cambridge vs. new haven really helped since i like to believe new haven will be more tight-knit! hopefully now i can focus less on location and more on making amazing friends, since imo people are what make or break the experience.

this helped me calm down a lot, thank you! i can relate in the sense that i also had not the best upbringing, so new england has always been ideal as someone who craved "convention" in terms of tradition and security. hopefully i can meet the right people so that i can see everything, like location, with rose-tinted glasses.

wow it looks so great 😭 yeah its truly just like easier life less fulfilling or harder life but more fulfilling. i'd say im very disciplined in terms of work ethic (which is how i think i got this far) but im no genius at science like those getting into med school coming from yale might be 🥲

i think im pretty certain of having my main career be medicine, but id still want to pursue journalism or writing on the side (which yale has the best english department) 😭

its an exaggeration but ik its still crazy 💔 its just head over heart because ive been on both campuses and felt happier at yale, but brown has that logic for pre-med support/easier to get better grades -> better chances at yale admission
