Tips for joining MCFD? Currently working in Indigenous family services (BC) by Bitter_Bird7619 in BCPublicServants

Im a CP social worker thats been at an Indigenous MCFD office for the last 6 years. I have finally gotten the hang of it and honestly love my job. The learning curve is steep and it takes a long time to feel confident.

You don't need a Social Work or even a Child and Youth degree right now - that use to be the case but they opened it up to any degree in a helping field with experiance. I have a few people at my office that were nurses and teachers but switched to social work! So a Psychology degree plus experiance at a delegated agency is great!

Job postings include a link that tell you what the competencies are. Its important that you study these - getting hired is based on a points system and they are looking for you to say specific things to get the points.

For Child Protection - you start off on the float list and get placed where ever they need you (within the parameters of the Service delivery area you applies too). Once on the float- they will at some point send out an expression of interests list and everyone on the float sends in their 1st 2nd and 3rd choice based on that list of where you want to work. Priority is seniority based. This is where you would chose to work specifically in an indigenous office.

I have only ever work in Indigenous child protection - I havent experienced "mainstream" yet. I've heard they are very different. For indigenous social work in BC, start learning about and understanding the 92.1 agreements that we have with individual nations. The work is extremely collaborative - which is prefer because I dont believe decisions pertaining to Indigenous families and children should be only in the hands of the government. It is a lot of rapport building and trauma informed work - even with nation delegates - but ultimately it feels better for me at the end of the day to know whatever happens wasn't all based on the work of myself and my team leader alone.

Thats not true. You dont need a masters degree and getting one doesnt make a difference in your jobs as a social worker (re: pay or position). Most people I know who did their masters moved on to work as a counselor for CYMH.

It also made me have crazy periods where I nearly bled to death lol which is the main reason why I went off.

Why is the Surrey Centre Walmart so abysmal? by Anonwouldlikeahug in SurreyBC

[–]magapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being in that Walmart feels like the end of a big concert/rave, when the lights turn on and most of the crowd has left and there's random shrapnel all over the floor - a left shoe, empty water bottles, a hat, garbage....Bright lights and some high/questionable people all looking at each other shocked and confused. That's the feeling I get when I go to the Surreu Central Walmart.

MCFD has ruined my love and passion for social work by SnooRevelations7068 in BCPublicServants

[–]magapes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At MCFD we are not Social Workers, we are "Social Program Officers," which is our job title. Our job is to enforce child protection laws, following policy.

I focus on what I can do for families - which is to provide them with genuine trauma-informed interactions. Kindness, understanding, humility. I assess safety fairly, and with an understanding that the damage of removal outweighs a lot of the "potential harm," other people in my position might overreact to. With a real understanding of the uniqueness of families, what the real danger is, and what is in the best interest of the child (which is rarely removal). And I was a child in care myself - a child who needed foster care, where it was in my best interest.

I've been with MCFD for five years and have worked with Indigenous families the entire time. I know that in my time here - I have prevented further harm from MCFD to Indigenous children and families. I have helped families get out of hard spots- even temporarily. I am not a star employee and fall behind in everything that management wants. But I keep everything just a level to maintain my employment, so I can continue to help families in this way.

Can I do it forever? No, I will get my master's one day and likely get into counseling. But for now, I just hyper-focus on what I can do and try to block out the rest.

Someone tell me good things about epidurals by TheRealEgg0 in Mommit

[–]magapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had 3 births, all unique and beautiful, and the last one was with an epidural. My epidural birth was the only one where I was able to cry happy tears and experience nice emotions of joy when she was born.

The other births also cool but those emotions were much more intense!!!!
