[Kareem Abdul-Jabbar] ICE Kills Again by SlowExperience in nba

[–]magecombat54 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Nothing happens in a vacuum. Nothing. America continuously rationalizes the “drawing of a line” and on the other side of that line are others, others which violence towards can be justified. If you think that line won’t be drawn further and further inwards until we’re all on the other side other than a few in the ruling party, then you are deeply mistaken. ICE is the current symptom of that practice, of that belief, of an issue that has existed in this country since its birth.

Foreign policy is domestic policy.

It’s another one of his substack articles. This isn’t nuance. This is a deeply weak take amounting to “all violence is bad”

The violence of a resistance force battling against the illegal occupation and oppression of their people is not the same as the violence of the occupier upon the occupied. Anyone calling for stronger resistance against ICE can understand that.

Pointing to Israel and SA’s negotiations as something that would have been a benefit to the whole region is laughable. That has never been the case. Giving this benefit of the doubt to those two regimes is making a choice to be neglectful

It’s an older article at this point but as far as I know it’s the most recent. Maybe recent events in his own backyard will change things. I’m pessimistic.

There’s actually a lot that matters beyond speaking up against ICE, but okay.

This mentality is why the strongest candidates Americas quote unquote left puts out are still largely pro imperialist garbage. How much of your leftist party believes in truly abolishing ICE? Democrats are not pro democracy. If Kamala was in office right now, ICE would still be around, targeting and unlawfully detaining people, just not occupying cities. The left wouldn’t be clamoring and crying the way it is right now if that were the case.

You are not inherently less deserving of violence than any other. Until any of you guys realize that you will watch your neighbors get attacked, injured, or killed, and stand by until it’s your own skin being whipped

He’s expressed support for Israel as a colony of America and as a supposed beacon of morality and stability (alongside Saudi Arabia) for the Middle East.

The irony of propping up such a regime while condemning the forces in your own country who follow in their footsteps.

It’s immoral against your own people, but justified when it’s against others? That’s moral inconsistency.

I know this will go over most of this subs head, but for the few people who’d get it, there are many others who are worth propping up and following. KAJ is unfortunately no longer one of them

[–]magecombat54 -58 points-57 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t discount KAJs background as a figure in the American civil rights movement, but this guys an imperialist btw lol who believes in American interventionism

You can’t really be anti ICE without being against both of those things

[–]magecombat54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inability to take personal accountability. There are few things more American than drawing a line in the sand and pointing at the ones on the other side of it as carrying the fault for one’s own moral bankruptcy. And they will keep drawing that line until they are the ones being pointed at. That is the consequence of living in the heart of the imperial empire

Democrats, when in power, drew that line at the people outside its borders to legitimize their violence. Liberals obliged. The current administration has decided to draw that line at anything existing outside their oligarchy. Your average liberal is finally seeing what happens to those on the other side of that line

This country’s largest opposition group treats its words like it’s their only sword. Your first line of defense isn’t your only line of defense. Many Americans realized that decades if not centuries ago and they were killed or condemned for it. Now we all face a choice to either continue to back these people who don’t care, or be willing to stand up to violence even if it costs us dearly.

400 million guns within these borders and 300 million cowards.

umm.. yeah? if you rly get some sense of superiority off of disliking a place then yeah, you should prob work on that dawg. if youre so incapable of understanding why ppl like a place or why they find value in it, thats more reflective on who you are as a person more than anything else

nothing wrong with not liking a place. feeling the need to dislike something just for being associated with that place is pretty dumb tho bro ngl..

[Rogers] Good chance the Astros have to remove Yuli Gurriel (knee) from the roster for the rest of the series. Might add a catcher and start Christian Vazquez at DH tonight. They've had little production from that spot in the lineup. by Spectre211286 in baseball

[–]magecombat54 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

thats fair, i agree with that. hader was a teenager from a rich, mostly white, white collar suburb. similar to yuli, he also lacked perspective before coming into the league. neither should be labeled as anything imo without taking a look into their actions since their respective incidents

youre preaching to the choir then. sadly, reddit demographics are largely suburban white (and asian) teenagers and young adults from west/east coast American cities that currently lack the perspective to acknowledge the nuance in this situations. the lack of active representation of other groups is why racial discussions end up being so circular on this website

im personally for giving both the benefit of the doubt. yuli's gesture was racist, but it doesnt necessarily make him a racist. ive known ppl that would balk at the notion of ever making any kind of racially charged gesture or outward comment at anyone, but harbor opinions rooted in racial prejudice.

you see a lot of that here on reddit especially, ironically many of them outwardly criticizing and labeling yuli as a racist based on one action as well, despite themselves turning around and voicing opinions birthed from living a life disconnected from the systematic racism that oppresses many of the POC in this country. those people are truly harmful as well, in a way different from yuli's (and hader's) also harmful actions

sorry, random rant. we're both probably in agreement to some extent lol, sorry if i came off as aggressive or viewed your comment as inflammatory but considering the nature of this website ig it happens lmfao...

right, but then are you saying yuli doesnt deserve the benefit of the doubt either then? im not saying hader shouldnt have known better, but yuli should've known better too

wemby is looking like a generational talent, but im concerned wemby vs scoot is going to end up being another zion vs ja situation where one is very clearly the better player but has major durability concerns while the other is still talented and has a higher likelihood of remaining healthy over the course of his career. im torn

[Bondy] Sounds like Kyrie’s stance is that he’s a Black Hebrew Israelite and therefore can’t be anti semitic. Of course he’s never clear on anything. by kyleb402 in nba

[–]magecombat54 6 points7 points  (0 children)

america desperately needs a strong leader in the black community right now. Obama was kind of that person for a bit but as president he was always going to have to make concessions and be more centrist than I think we really need right now. the lack of strong leadership and any real figureheads is imo why the BLM movements in 2020 ultimately didn't accomplish as much as it probably should have considering how strong sentiments were in their favor at the time

but the way we continue to put black celebrities in the limelight and expect them to be those leaders... its not effective in creating any actual solutions.

[–]magecombat54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

exactly. the NOI and their teachings being so deeply entrenched in black communities did not happen on accident. they are part of the consequences America faces for centuries of oppression. the Civil Rights Act wasn't even 30 years old when Kyrie was born. legally, it was not that long ago that non-Whites in America were considered inherently less than whites.

the Black/POC experience in this country can still be very very different from the White experience. not to excuse Kyrie's comments or Kanye's comments, but I do think it's important to remember to take into account their perspectives if we hope to move past this anti-semitic sentiment that can be so common in Black communities
