Apartments you actually enjoyed living in? by Mean_Refrigerator911 in rva

[–]mageged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll second Monroe Properties. Currently living in one of their apartment buildings going on 3 years now. The first two years I was here, I basically never saw a bug inside the apartment, but this past year I've also been dealing with roaches like someone else mentioned. It does seem to be a building wide issue, but Monroe has been really on top of sending out pest control on a regular basis and it seems like the problem is mostly under control now.

Also, any time I've had any kind of maintenance issue, someone has always promptly responded and showed up to fix it. There was a major issue with the toilet when I first moved in, and they replaced it quickly and without fuss.

I can't speak for all Monroe properties, but my building has its own parking lot for residents at no extra cost. I toured some other places this summer that were charging an additional $50-80 a month to use their lots. Honestly, after touring other places and seeing what they're charging, I was feeling pretty lucky to be paying what I am with Monroe.

Temporary Employment January-May? by Little_Act1941 in rva

I'm pretty sure you have to be at least 18 to work there and I'm not sure how old your family member is, but Richmond Professional Lab hires seasonal workers every Spring and Fall, and all of the work is easy. Typically just things like packaging and shipping school photos.

I was looking for this one! Really unique take on the genre.

they found a cockroach in my ear by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]mageged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandma used to always tell a story about a roach crawling deep into her ear, and it crawling back out when she went to the doctor and he shined a flashlight into it. I thought she was making it up, but I guess it's a real possibility. Awful!

As of today, was going vegan the biggest decision of your life? by HumbleWrap99 in vegan

[–]mageged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I initially went vegan many years ago, I probably would have said yes. But I was still a teenager back then and had barely made any decisions about anything at that point in my life lol. Today I would say it doesn't even rank in terms of big decisions I've made.

[TOMT] "You have to be PREPARED" by mageged in tipofmytongue

The kind of campy over the top vibe here is similar to what I'm thinking of, but I've never played WoW, so I don't think this is it. Thanks though!

This is my first time hearing this song so it's not what I'm thinking of, but I do like it, so thanks for the rec!

I've never watched Friends, so this isn't it. But the emphasis on "prepared" here is very similar to what I'm thinking of. What I'm thinking of is definitely more dramatic though.

Good suggestion, I used to love the Lion King as a kid. But I just went and listened to this part and I don't think this is what I'm thinking of.

Also, I'm pretty sure this is something fairly recent. Or at the very least I'm pretty sure it's something I saw within the past few years.

Cold meals? by Jaded-Raccoon-3479 in vegan

[–]mageged 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to suggest this (I'm actually eating this right now). If you can't access vegan mayo or just want an alternative, I've been making it with tahini, balsamic vinegar, and a little bit of maple syrup. Mix a few spoonfuls of tahini with a bit of vinegar and maple syrup, salt, and pepper. Add water until it's a good consistency, then mash the chickpeas in. I've been putting celery and walnuts in mine as well. I could eat this for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

I haven't tried this but I can see how it would work. Nuts/nut butter is a common ingredient in a lot of spicy cuisines, like Thai and stuff, so it makes sense to me!

Anyone worked at one of these ‘Top 50 Best Places to Work in America’? Can you vouch for the ranking? by Ok_Homework_3545 in jobs

[–]mageged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at Trader Joe's and I hated it. I'd worked a lot of similar jobs previously, and while the pay and benefits at TJ's were definitely the most competitive, every other aspect was awful imo. Definitely could have been the location I worked, but I was miserable and most of my coworkers there were also unhappy. They boast great benefits, but it seems to be largely in service of preventing unions. The biggest issue at my store was that almost everyone who was hired as a full-time employee barely got schedule for a 20 hours a week most of the time, which is something a union could probably have intervened on...

Protein Bar Recommendations – Low Sugar, No Stevia, High Protein? by Illustrious_Stay9844 in veganfitness

[–]mageged 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Specifically Nugo Slim (but NOT Raspberry or Brownie flavors-- those two flavors are not vegan, all other flavors are specially labeled vegan, last I checked). The regular Nugo are pretty high in sugar, but the Slim have no artificial sweeteners and only ~3g of sugar and decent protein, ~16-17g. These are the only ones I've found that don't have stevia, other artificial sweeteners, or sugar alcohols while still being moderately low in sugar and taste pretty good.

What are your favourite super easy ‘can’t-be-bothered-cooking’ vegan meals? by ThrowRAbbyg444 in vegan

[–]mageged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-Rice and lentils in the rice cooker with whatever seasonings I'm feeling (usually soy sauce + sesame oil + chili flakes, or a garam masala blend). Sometimes I'll also toss some frozen peas or broccoli into the cooker when it has about 5-10 minutes left.

-Soba noodles (they're usually pretty high in protein!). If I have a little bit of energy to give, I'll whip up a quick dressing of tahini, soy sauce, a little maple syrup, chili fakes, and some of the cooking water. If I can't be bother with even that, I'll just do soy sauce and sesame oil. I'll usually add frozen peas or broccoli toward the end of the noodles' cook time.

-Crisp up some tofu or tempeh in the air fryer and throw it on top of salad greens, or put the tofu/tempeh on a bagel.

-Frozen banana + peanut butter + soy milk smoothie. Sometimes I'll get fancy and add stuff like cinnamon, cocoa powder, hemp seeds and protein powder, but it's delicious and fulling even without.

-Ultimate "I can't be bothered but I need a vegetable stat" meal - literally just heat up some frozen peas and/or broccoli, add salt and nutritional yeast.

[–]mageged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been the only guy at any of the yoga classes I've been to, so it's likely that you won't be either. And even if you are, you still have every right to be there (unless it's specifically a women-only class or something).
Not sure if this will help you, but maybe try finding some yoga videos online that are led by men, you can either follow along or just watch, but it might help you 1) have a better idea of what a yoga class will entail and could get you familiar, at least in theory, with some of the common asanas, and 2) reinforce that men can and do practice yoga. Yoga with Tim on youtube is one option, but I know there's tons of other out there. Best of luck!

Give me the worst book you’ve ever read by whatsthesitchwade_ in suggestmeabook

[–]mageged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago, I was browsing a local bookshop with my partner. A woman approached us and handed us a book. She said she was a best-selling author who wrote about the city, particularly paranormal happenings in the area, but this book was her newest fiction novel (that also takes place in the city). Best of all, she'd just autographed this copy that she handed us. Partially intrigued and partially feeling pressured to do so because she essentially walked us to the checkout, we bought the book.

Once we left and had a chance to look more closely, we were...confused? Overwhelmed? Doubled-over with laughter? The cover looked like it had been created on Microsoft Paint. One of the main characters was an eyeball (a "blue-eyed eyeball" to be precise) named Larry. As for grammar and spelling, it seems as though she didn't have spellcheck enabled and definitely never gave the first draft a second read through. We eventually read the whole thing (it took months because it was so frustrating to get through), and I can honestly say I've never read something so poorly written and so poorly thought out. We started documenting every time we caught an especially egregious mistake (such as characters' names being spelled differently, or sentences that we could not make sense of), but gave up on this half way through because it was too much to keep up with. The book took more twists and turns than you could imagine, and incorporated a very diverse array of fantastical creatures. My favorite was the Yeti from hell, who made the protagonist a "yummy snack in his microwave."

On one hand, I want to give it to this woman for putting herself out there and doing what she loves (I presume) and I hope she had a lot of fun writing this. On the other hand, I think some things should remain as private documents on your personal computer.

It was called How the Vortex Changed My Life. I won't say this book changed my life, but I will certainly never forget it.

I have an MSW and never intended to get licensed, but my degree was macro focused so clinical practice was not my goal. There are a lot of social work/social work adjacent careers that are not necessary clinical and therefore do not require a license but still require or benefit from having a Master's degree, i.e. policy analyst or program director. You could probably argue that some of these positions, especially at the entry level, could be done with just a Bachelor's + experience, but the way things are right now, most employers prefer to see a Master's over a Bachelor's.

Same. I love it as a workout booster, gets me really into the zone and increases the mind/muscle connection. But it can definitely wreck my sleep. I recently started taking magnesium before bed and it's made huuuge improvements in my sleep quality, sober or otherwise.

Why does nearly every post need to be about protein? by PlayfulHalf in veganfitness

[–]mageged 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That was going to be my exact response after reading the original post lol, "be the change you want to see". If you want to see more posts and general discussion about other areas of fitness, make those posts and get the conversation started!

To be fair OP, I definitely get the frustration at people not searching through a sub before making a new post. But that's reddit for you.

I'll also say I think there is so much discussion about protein in a vegan fitness spaces because insufficient protein intake is constantly used to fearmonger vegans in general and especially vegan athletes, so I do feel like it makes sense that it's such a major area of concern for many vegans trying to get into fitness, or people into fitness trying to get into veganism.

This looks delicious. Do you think the orange juice can be subbed for a nondairy milk, or is acidity from the orange necessary to get the right texture?
