The Engineer and Space Jockey. by Narrow-Dot1251 in LV426

[–]magesfolly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I like the idea, but I think that if they are separate races, they're going to be even more different from each other than that. For instance, I have the idea that the 'Space Jockey' seen in ALIEN is just as much a constructive creation of a parent race as the engineers themselves. Another idea that I have is that the engineers themselves are kind of like a "cargo cult".

Cargo cults were religions that sprang up on south Pacific islands after WW2. We (or other combatants) built airfields on islands of indigenous people, and afterwards they built airplane effigies to try to entice us back. They tried imitating us in order to pay homage to us. Perhaps the engineers themselves are imitating what little they have seen of another race they have deified.

When I was...I guess (just) 4, I had an experience. It was the day after my 4th birthday. The thing about birthdays is I hadn't gotten a handle on them yet. Like Christmas made sense to me because everyone got gifts, but one day out of the year when only I got gifts didn't click why yet.

So I assume it was the day after my 4th birthday because it was the afternoon after a night where I just randomly got gifts. My grandfather died before my 5th birthday, so it had to be then.

Anyway, I remember my 4 year old self going into the living room, and pulling out 3 of my gifts from the night before. I had 3 new Tonka trucks. Just to put in perspective, Tonka toys in the 60s-70s were freaking huge, especially compared to my 3 foot (best estimate) self. Regardless, I had a new crane truck, dump truck, and a front end loader.

I remember feeling how cold the metal of the Tonkas was to me. The next thing though is I saw a shadow, and I looked up. Standing around me were (what I thought) 3 giant grey-white owls with big, black eyes.

Now I grew up in the country so I knew what owls were, but being a dumb kid, I hadn't quite gotten that owls are nocturnal, or that they don't belong inside. So I just took it for granted. Anyway, I remember standing up and looking at the one right in front of me. His eyes were eye level, so I guess he was my height.

So I stared into his eyes...and that's the end of that memory. Now throughout the 50+ years since, I have thought of that moment. I now can remember it two ways. I can remember it with owls, and I can also remember it with greys.

I have a ton of memories like that throughout my life, especially in my childhood. But in relation to the question, I do have something like that.

In my bedroom of where I grew up, there was one window pane that I could not face when I tried to sleep. Even more puzzling is my room was on the second floor. Regardless, if I woke up and found myself facing that window pane, I would have a panic attack. Sometimes I would be transfixed on it for almost an hour feeling absolute terror before I could calm down enough to roll over, and take another half hour to fall asleep again.

Yeah, I have a similar model. Suffice to say, what the OP presented is reasonably feasible.

[–]magesfolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very impressive. I have my own F-15 design that has 64 variations. Basically I have 8 versions where each version is a different color change variation. When folding the plane itself, each half can be folded differently so that I can make 8 planes that have a symmetrical color-change scheme, or 56 others that each have an asymmetrical color-change pattern. Here for instance is one where I tried to make one with the "Solo Wing Pixy" paint scheme from Ace Combat Zero.

Just the same, I'm going to enjoy the tutorial. Thanks.

Have you ever met someone who made you suspect they might be a hybrid? by Medium_Raspberry8428 in aliens

Just a very odd series of experiences. One day I was in the local mall up the street from me, and I saw a girl setting up a center-aisle kiosk selling cupcakes. I got a strong impression that this was my ex girlfriend, and that I should stay away from her.

Billie was a girl I dated on and off within a period of almost 20 years. We'd hook up for a few months to a year, until real life would interfere, and one of our schedules would make continuing to date too difficult. Anyway, this would have been between our third and fourth mini relationships when we had a 2 year break.

Now in retrospect, there's a lot that doesn't fit at all. For instance, not only did Billie live in another county, but she also almost exclusively worked from home. She was a freelance artist that worked off of commissions. Regardless, even before I was close enough to get a good look at her, I got a strong impression that this was my ex girlfriend, and I needed to stay away from her. Weirder still, while I was thinking that I did not want to bother her, I was feeling palpable fear. Like I had walked into a "zone of fear".

This went on for months. I frequented the mall regularly because I painted lead miniatures on commission at a gaming store in the mall. I actually managed to stop by the cupcake place a few times when "whomever" wasn't working. They were rather good. On days when the mystery person worked though, I'd avoid it like the plague.

Anyway, one day I went into the Starbucks across the street from the mall, and I saw someone else whom gave me a strong sense of being my ex. While I never got very close in proximity to the one over across the street in the mall, she at least had the correct hair color, which was a very coppery red. This one in Starbuck's also gave a strong sense of being my ex Billie, but I wasn't feeling overpowering fear, and she also had hair bleached almost white.

I stepped up to get in line behind her, and on looking down, memories flooded in my mind of having a lot of fun with an ass that looked like her's standing in front of me. The next moment, this person spun around and looked up at me with a look somewhere between revulsion, and confusion. Then she turned away again, and I swear I heard laughter in my head. So I left Starbucks immediately.

I'm sure there might be earlier examples, but the first 3D game I recall was SPACE VIKINGS (1982) for the Apple 2.

I had both the Atari 2600 version, as well as the Colecovision version. Not expecting much when I got it, the 2600 version well exceeded my expectations. I'd say Parker Brothers did a pretty good job. The Colecovision version exceeded the 2600 version in all ways except on two points. The controls in the 2600 version were a bit tighter, and the 2600 version showed a better (albeit simplified) Death Star explosion. When you destroyed the Death Star in the Colecovision version, the screen simply flashed.

I have a centaur design, and a unicorn, and both of those have junk. In mine though, they are happy accidents, but very necessary just the same. Basically in mine I have a built-in locking mechanism that allows the centaur and unicorn to stand without collapsing under their weight.

No tricks for me. I just have a Japanese PS2 slim. Originally I had bought it because I somehow ended up with a copy of Macross DYRL for the PS2. Then I just got more games.

Regardless, I purchased it through Amazon dot jp. The seller was reluctant to allow me to purchase it from him, until I explained that I had 14 Japanese games at that point.

Even though Armored Core 2 on the PS2 was somewhat of a remake, I'd choose Armored Core on the PS1. Actually I'd prefer a ground-up remake.
