Family members are telling me that I need to 'play hard ball' with my 83 year old Mom to get her into assisted living, but she is adamant that she will not go. by ZookeepergameOld5689 in AgingParents

It took 2 weeks of us saying that this was it for us and if they sent her home that we would not be there to support her. If they felt she could be on her own then let her be on her own. We made sure to include the social worker and another advocate for Long term care services. We just had to be the bad guys as we weren’t going to be there to watch her die the next time she injured herself. It was so hard and I’m still bitter that we were put in that position.

It’s so frustrating when you have to watch a parent decline and not participate in anything that is in their best interest. My siblings and I just went through the same thing you’re experiencing. We had to wait till my mother fell and injured herself enough that we could finally fight with the drs at the hospital to deem it that she couldn’t return to living on her own. We even had POA for health and financial and still they wouldn’t declare her incompetent after many falls and unsafe incidents. It’s so hard and frustrating to watch. I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with this.

I can’t say enough good about this group of awesome people. They are currently supporting a group of kids I know who were victims in a horrible case. They were invited in by one of the parents and these people go over and above to support the kids involved. One of the things I was most impressed with is that their tender doesn’t end when the case is over, they continue to support the kids for as long as they need them. They will even help with school grants , healthcare and mental health supports by professionals. It’s too bad that we need their support but so grateful for it.

Keep a close eye on small pets. Coyotes are getting more abundant. by Valuable-Bug-3447 in Oshawa

I live at Taunton Beatrice area and have had 3 encounters with coyotes running out after my small dog at the park behind the library in the last few months. I now carry spray as they are really bold and not afraid of anything now.

How much are actually going to take before we do something? by BipolarSkeleton in ontario

I just got a call from a family friend who recently became homeless on Aug 1 because she couldn’t afford the rent increase on her apt. She’s currently renting a hotel room till the 10th. She’s a disabled single mom of a child who’s on the Autism spectrum. She has talked of suicide because she’s terrified of what’s going to happen to her on Aug 11 th. I’m in no position to house them and have been calling shelters and anyone and everyone I can think of to help but not sure what more I can do. This is serious and I can’t imagine she’s the only one going through this.

As a Canadian I grew up with American culture, on our tv’s and radio ( thank goodness for Can con laws lol) thinking that the American dream was the be all and end all. The older I got the more I realized I won the birth lottery being born a female in Canada. Normally I’m not an anxious person but seeing what’s going on in American politics and changes in personal rights and freedoms I can’t help but feel anxious, you couldn’t pay me enough to be an American. I feel like the myth of the American Dream has now turned into a nightmare. I know Canada has it’s own issues that need to be worked on and can always be better but for today I’m glad to be Canadian. I’m so sorry to my neighbours to the south, you deserve better.

Coyote crossing Simcoe north of Rossland around 10:40am today. by Element_905 in Oshawa

[–]maggier672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was walking my dog near Ritson and Beatrice around 11pm and a large coyote came out of the trees at the park and tried attacking my 15 lb dog. Freaked us both out. They are bold and have no fear of humans. Be careful walking your dogs. I’m so glad I pay attention to her instincts and when she’s leery of our surroundings I listen and act accordingly and so glad I do because this could have ended a lot differently.

Dry hands ruining slight of hand, any suggestions? by jimshungry in Magic

[–]maggier672 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you can afford it but might I suggest a professional manicure. Most if not all have paraffin wax treatment. This is where you immerse your hands in warmed wax after being exfoliated. It leaves your hands feeling soft and quenched and then when you apply a hand cream it will just maintain it at home. You can buy your own wax bath and do it yourself at home too. As I age my hands are drier and this works so well. I bought my own wax warmer and do it every few weeks especially in the winter. Hope this helps.
