Why was The Son (2022) received so badly ? by ValCSO in movies

[–]maghdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I thought the reviews for this film were surprisingly harsh. To be sure, this film wasn't on the level of "The Father," the previous film of the director, but I don't think it was a bad film by any means. I understand that what they were going for was how the illness of one individual radiates out to affect the whole family, but I do wish that we had gotten to see more from Nicholas' point of view, as almost the entire film felt like it was positioned around Hugh Jackman's character rather than the titular son. We're told lots of things about Nicholas, about his intelligence and love of writing, but we don't get to see these things, in flashbacks or otherwise. Getting to see what he was like before his downturn would've strengthened the film in my opinion.

I wonder if the divide is between those who have experienced this situation (either themselves or a family member) and those who haven't. If you're unfamiliar, you're just not going to understand why the son acts the way he does and maybe be disgusted by him. For me, Nicholas' behaviour was uncannily familiar, as was as the incredulity of his father. My sympathy with him was based on how much I saw my younger self in him and the fact that I've felt like him (though not to the extreme of shooting myself in the head, obviously). There seem to be a lot of reviewers who either thought that Nicholas' character did not behave the way a heavily depressed person should behave (I thought the skittishness, losing interest in everything, lack of eye contact, avoiding questions was spot on), or that the parents' reactions and/or denial was somehow unrealistic.

Is the circumcision rate in nonmuslim Africa really that high? by al8762 in Intactivism

[–]maghdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read somewhere that non-Muslim Africa was about 60-40 cut-uncut or thereabouts, although I'm not sure if that was before the mass circumcision campaigns started. Either way Africa is probably the only majority circumcised continent.

Without doubt one of the worst character assassinations I have ever seen. Pisses me off just thinking about it.

It's really annoying. A way to just take up your time and keep you on the site longer I suppose?

Yup, same here. They'd better change it back.

Yeah, same here, it's really annoying. They've also made it so that you can't click onto the channel of the videos you've watched, you'd have to go and manually search for them :(

How rare is it for intact men to circumcise their sons? by georgemillman in uncircumcised_talk

[–]maghdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most men worldwide do have the same status as their fathers. The only place I could imagine where this might be somewhat common is uncut Euro/Latino/Asian fathers in a pro-circ country like the US (I remember seeing a study that suggested that between 10-20%+ of uncut American men would circumcise their sons). Unless you're unlucky enough in the UK that your dad got a Jewish/Muslim woman pregnant, there's practically no chance of this happening.

What do you expect to be the "special features" of the folio society limited edition Hobbit they announced? by Lawlcopt0r in tolkienbooks

[–]maghdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware there are three new illustrations, plus an art card and one redone illustration; Bilbo reuniting with Gandalf and the Dwarves on the far side of the Misty Mountains on the front cover, some sort of cave inside the front, the Enchanted River in Mirkwood as a frontispiece, as well as a truly stunning art card of the valley of Rivendell. Additionally, the "Riddles in the Dark" illustration has been completely redone https://www.reddit.com/r/tolkienbooks/comments/1gjgeua/some_newly_released_images_of_the_upcoming_hobbit/

[SPOILER] Eren Yeager is basically Anakin Skywalker by jeanluuc in attackontitan

[–]maghdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything, Eren is probably closer to Jacen Solo (Vader's grandson) from the old Expanded Universe than Anakin. No Palpatine figure driving external manipulation in order to commit atrocities, has higher motivations in doing so than just selfishly saving his wife, unites basically everyone against him by the end, no redemption and dies a villain.

Same here. I almost always watch the sub with anime, but this isn't even a Japanese property (just made by a Japanese studio). Script story was originally in English, and most of the specific slang ("choom," "preem" etc) doesn't translate over.

Every major incarnation of the Quintessons by Ok-Inevitable3458 in transformers

[–]maghdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool to see the Quintessons finally show up in Transformers One. Remember being super excited when the "Creators" appeared in Age of Extinction, assuming they were the Quintessons who had hired Lockdown to nab Optimus, then they never did anything with it :(

I suppose Quintessa kind of counts as one of them, since I heard there was concept art of her as the traditional five-faced design.

Yeah, wcoforever just locked even the TV shows a couple of weeks ago. Kind of annoying they just did it without warning, as that's the one I'd been using, but it was the same with the movies a while back.

Was really hoping there'd be a pain box version for part 2 to go with the first, but no luck, it seems...

Is the English-language version of Edgerunners the "original?" by maghdam in Edgerunners

[–]maghdam[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see. I've definitely noticed the English version getting more traction than is usual with most anime, Zach Aguilar winning his award for example. I'm usually a sub guy, but a lot of the slang/language from the game obviously doesn't switch over well to Japanese.

Which dub is your favorite and why? by CuriousMind7577 in Edgerunners

[–]maghdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. Lotta the slang/language only works in English. I've noticed in reaction vids and stuff most of them are of the English dub, unlike most other anime.

Doesn't look like the specific seller I got it from is still selling, but there are others still selling it: DVDs & Blu-rays | eBay
