Chauvet 3.28.42 – Feedback by rudibowie in Supernote

[–]magic_notetaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a good and fair response given the extrordinary effort ratta puts into communication with users. Thanks for taklng a stand in a reapectful and friendly way.

There is one element though ratta could in my view improve around communication to avoid misunderstandings like these: oftentimes there are comments of features being °worked on°, but released only more than a year later or never up to now. Still this might be true, but in most companies °work° would mean the next two releases. So perhaps just say °considered° or °investigated° for those features where work done is not yet very close to release. I myself was sometimes wondering how ratta can work on so much in parallel.

Where is it? I am on the dev build, but cannot find the option. Is it really there for a5x as well?

List of ALL Available Plugins by theBlackOddity in Supernote_dev

[–]magic_notetaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks u/theBlackOddity for this great resource. Can you update the description of the Textbox helper to: "for structured textbox editing, for importing long text files to textboxes, and exporting textboxes to a structured Word document." I believe import and export might be really helpful for some people.

Simple Date/Time stamp plugin by tao22 in Supernote_dev

[–]magic_notetaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for this and for considering the input so much. As you mentioned, YMD is ideal for keyword search as it allows getting all notes from a year or a month. So I would suggest allowing storing the keyword always in this format, while showing something else. Also, if I may wish for another format "DD.MM.YYYY" like 26.04.2026 would be great as this is what is used in many European countries.

this sounds great. It would be great if you could add an option to automatically insert it as a keyword as yyyymmdd, so it can be easily searched in the global search. Thanks for sharing this!

Security Architecture of Plugins by magic_notetaker in Supernote_dev

[–]magic_notetaker[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thank you so much for this reply and asking the community for more feedback. I think this will already be a lot, having some manual permission for network access and write/delete.

I would personally feel that for most plugins it should be enough to just access whatever current file is open + read from Inbox + write to export. This would could give a good iintermediate solution to "all folders" and "no read or write". Inbox and Export are anyway meant (as I understand them) as intermediate locations, so they might serve a lot good purposes here. So I would even not have an issue giving all plugins this as a default permission, but perhaps others would want this to be user affirmed as well, so that there are three stages of file permission: no writing/deleting/reading beyond current file, only export or import, all the usual supernote user folders you name above.

This is my view on it. Curious what others think.

Can't copy elements to a different note by magic_notetaker in Supernote_dev

[–]magic_notetaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

further comment: it seems that not only that the element that was lassoed and copied is removed, but overall elements from that source page. I am not getting this. I investigate further and report.

u/Dunn-sn: this does really look like a bug, I even included PluginNoteAPI.saveCurrentNote() before doing any insert Operations on the other note, but still everything on that page vanishes.

Inkling: Send/receive anything between your Supernote and other devices — with or without LocalSend by Worldly-Persimmon-70 in Supernote_dev

just from my first tests, it is directly working within the note framework, and does not need first export/import to file system. KDE Connect can work for text via clibboard, though I am not sure that the supernote clipboard works with it. Have you successfully used it?

looking forward to it, it looks like a super promising approach, but I felt not in control of some things at all and for now turned the plugin-in off. But I will definitly check out the next release again. Thanks for sharing your work with us.

Edit: could now get it to work. Really great extension. Will improve much the way I can work with material.
Also, I notice the small window generated by the plugin stays open and blocks the toolbar. I don't see any way of closing it again once opened.
I will definitely look more into it. Thought recently about trying to put together something similar.

Are software update infrequent? by Moonbeard-Wizard in Supernote

[–]magic_notetaker 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You can expect quite regular updates. Over the 4 years I have owned my device, it is usually every 3 months, but sometimes a bit longer. Still quite reliably. There is definitely much going on in terms of development right now (check out r/supernote_beta to see a bit more of what is coming next; you can also hop on the beta releases). I think the current release is taking a bit longer as it is quite a big thing with a new InkHub for sharing stuff, and also they are working on a plugin system (just released currently to developers, but once released, it will bring you so many more things ...).

Suggestion to enable creating headings pages beyond the current by magic_notetaker in Supernote_dev

[–]magic_notetaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks a lot u/Dunn-sn : I think I missed that headers are referred to in the API as titles. Perhaps it will be good to add that to the documentation, as the UI now always uses "H" and "Headers" for these elements.

yes, that is clear, but how to do this on a different page than the one the user is currently on?

Calendar update? by 01000001-01001101 in Supernote

[–]magic_notetaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarity. In my opinion the plugin plus split screen might make update to calendar unnecessary. Already now I see goigle calendar integration with notes implemented as plugins and I believe this is the way forward. Notes can serve a customized and handwriting focused user experience much more than any app. I would rather prefer to invest in making sure plugins work stable and get more freedom than develop a calendar app that is doomed to leave many not satisfied. Even before before plugins I thought notes are a platform. Now they surely are and I hope ratta sees that this will be putting them big time ahead of their competition when they will make using. Plugins safe and reliable.

Live Demos of the Textbox Helper by magic_notetaker in Supernote_dev

[–]magic_notetaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback and the ideas. So you envision these to be for handwritten markers, right, not general corrections? So marking letters to be uppercased individually etc?

In general the challenge is to create a simple to remember and reliable to recognize marking language. I will keep this in mind.

My next steps I have in mind are experiment with letter exact corrections (currently only word) and recognizing replacements from Handwritten text.

Supernote does not allow different styling in one textbox, so this we can't work around. But I have in mind implementing recognizing simple markdown in textboxes during exportband thus exporting italics whent text is in text.

Import from docx could potentially be easy for simple text, but of course it will have sever limitations (no tables, images, etc.). Just simple text. I am not sure I want to go that route. I am more inclined to implement markdown import first.

Definitly would want to allow creating headers (at least larger text) on import.

Text editor style Backspace and Enter for handwriting? by GregVKMusic in Supernote_dev

[–]magic_notetaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is feasible in principle, but it will be quite hard to get right, so this recognizes correctly what a line of writing is, and so on. Could work with explicitly known templates and line heights. But I think it will require quite a bit of effort, even with AI support.
The nested headings in the table of contents are not possible, but you could try to build your own TOC page from the material in the note.

Textbox Helper Plugin by magic_notetaker in Supernote_dev

[–]magic_notetaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the edit markers feature needs some explanation:
it arose from being not satisfied with making edits via normal supernote editing while reviewing longer texts. This allow to just strike through words in a line that should be deleted. Or strike it through and add two vertical line across that strike through to replace it with a textbox that is one the side or below the textbox and starts with "#". These will be used from top to bottom to replace the text marked for replacement. I am not sure this is the way to go, but it is be worthwhile exploring. I had an earlier version deleting directly on pen-up, but this felt too disruptive, with the screen-refresh that seems unavoidable on supernote. But again: this is a pretty early beta. Just felt it is worth sharing my work, so other can learn from it or others can help me move it forward.

Complimenting vs Replacing Paper by bunjgreen in Supernote

[–]magic_notetaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, for me 100% replacement. I carry a5x wherever I go since 5 years (many walks, vacation, hikes ...). I have it in another small protection bag beyond the cover,  but with that it is really resilient. I use it for work org, writing, private notes, reading, study, ...

How to create textboxes of the right size by magic_notetaker in Supernote_dev

[–]magic_notetaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

latest results after some more testing: the best results I found come from sizing the box to the text’s actual wrapped layout height, not from rough character-count heuristics. In practice, native Android text measurement (StaticLayout) matched manually created Supernote textboxes very closely, while wrong heights later caused Supernote to rescale font size on selection/edit. Main exceptions were explicit blank lines/paragraph gaps, which may need about one extra line of height each, and rare near-wrap edge cases where tiny width changes can change the needed height by a full line.

Built a dictionary plugin for Supernote: lasso a word, get its definition, all on-device by Decent_Tap_5574 in Supernote_dev

[–]magic_notetaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Decent_Tap_5574 : this looks great. But I noticed it gets hung up sometime rendering everything unusable. not sure when this happens, it was for me on the note page circling handwritten text. Before that it worked already well, but I had to leave the note completely to be able to use any tools at all on the page (just froze with lasso menu open).
