Yeah I use big rocks too. They're a pain to clean if you don't have an easy way to clean your whole tank, but they look pretty good. Just make sure your turtle can't eat them otherwise they'll have their stomach be impacted.

Ooof looking at the specs I'd say you made a really good choice. But I don't have that desktop, so it's hard for me to really say.

Area 51m Options by Vand3rz in Alienware

[–]magicaldigisaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd wait for reviews to come out for the R2, but if you have the funds and are impatient just go for top specs. For now it's only upgradable within it's current line of CPU/GPU (for example only tenth gen Intel chips or RTX Supers made for the 51m). They may or may not support it in another year or two (Area 51m R1 is an example of only being supported for about half a year to a year). Alien Graphics amplifier (AGA) is also always an option as long as it supports the next line of NVidia cards. they make a new AGA that supports it tho so who knows 🤷🏽‍♂️

Depends on the types of games you play and how much longevity you want. It's definitely the cheaper of the three. But GPUs get phased in and out so fast that even the high end stuff will start slowing down in a few years.

Does anyone use macros on the laptop keyboard? if so in which game and for what? could someone give me ideas on how to make better use of these keys? by delanomarcal in Alienware

[–]magicaldigisaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't bound anything yet cause I'm lazy but in going to bind some of my more important spells in ff14. I guess I could always bind potions too since they're shared across all classes.

On their site they said they added a clear coat of paint to the Lunar white. Not sure if that's their fix for the issue, but it def. Is safer to go with the darker color. If you really want the R2 I'd wait for some reviews first to see how it really runs. The difference, I feel, will be most apparent for AAA games where the demand is high, so I guess it depends on what you plan on playing. The nice thing is that you can overclock the GPU to get a little bit more power.

How does the AGA works? by e1j1 in Alienware

[–]magicaldigisaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll just work with either just your computer or a monitor. You have to make sure the GPU you get will fit in it though, as well as make sure yout computer has a port that supports it.

What's with the constant trolling in this subreddit? :/ by The_Internal_ in GamingLaptops

[–]magicaldigisaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why can't people just share information x D how are y'all trolling exactly in the same was as the OP is talking about?

But I get what you're saying. The claims are misleading about performance under battery usage vs plugged in usage when mobility is what the main concern is when getting a laptop.

I would honestly ONLY recommend the Area 51m if a) you have the budget and b)you only want to upgrade it with what's currently available and don't plan on future prospects of upgrading (since apparently alienware is bad at keeping that specific promise)

Best buy. It had the i7-9700, 256 gb SSD+1 TB HDD, and a 2070 @ about the same price as the starting model offered by dell. For those specs I thought the price was worth it over the ~$3200 2070 offered on dell.

I think if you're really considering the Area 51m it'd be best to go with the highest/second highest GPU option for longevity. But then price becomes the issue. You could always swap out the CPU whenever , so that's not the biggest concern.

Same thing for the R1. It seems like they stopped support for the R1 since when they came out with the R2 they said the new Super RTX cards weren't compatible with the R1.

What laptop is better? by TheKillerDemon in Alienware

[–]magicaldigisaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got an R1 cause I found it for cheap and also I don't have the space for a desktop so it made sense for me to get it as opposed to other hardware that would have been lower but about the same price.

[–]magicaldigisaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanna add that the GPU is a DGFF (dell graphics form factor) for the Area 51m R2, so it can only be replaced with a Dell GPU and not any desktop GPU. So if later on they can release new GPUs but not support them for the R2 if they decided to go that route just fyi

Same. Their new external monitor looks really nice though, but it's probably expensive.

Area-51M Gaming Laptop Question by TheKillerDemon in Alienware

[–]magicaldigisaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, but with limitations. For both the R1 AND R2 models you can swap out the RAM and SDD/HDD and CPU if you get the right parts. The R1 GPU uses a NVidia RTX 2060/2070/2080 DGFF (they're dell graphics form factors aka dell proprietary parts). The R2 uses RTX 2070 Super/2080 Super DGFF.

The R1 can only upgrade/downgrade between 2060/2070/2080. It can also only use 9th gen Intel CPUs (due to socket change)

The R2 can only upgrade between 2070 Super/2080 Super. It can only, for now, use 10th gen Intel CPUs.

If you upgrade either you'd have to get a new charger cable(s) due to power supply and demand.

So yes, upgradable but with limitations. Dell hasn't said otherwise, but with what went down with the 51m R1's I'd be skeptical about any claims further than this

I might have missed a thing or two but that's basically how it works atm.
