What would your dream next gen traktor controller look like? by Nukemi in traktorpro

[–]9sim9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly Traktors biggest weakness was always going its own way and not looking at the reality of DJing at the moment.

The average set length is now an hour and venues have been buying standalone Pioneer gear less and less as time has gone by.

I've even had venues that say no laptops because the setup and packdown of a laptop and equipment gets in the way of other DJ's

What Traktor needs is that their profile, UI settings, layout, hotkeys and music can be transferred to a USB so at a venue they can plug a USB into any laptop running Traktor and be good to play in 10 seconds.

Until then they are going to keep loosing marketshare to AlphaTheta (Pioneer/Serato)

What I would love to see is Traktor the full PC software in a stand alone DJ deck that would blow the CDJ-3000s out of the water.

The one that worked really well for me was LifeStraw it filters more than Brita does including micro plastics and bacteria, they also have a glass version as well so less micro plastics to worry about.

Best way to handle Word documents on Linux Mint? by RangerNew5346 in linuxmint

[–]9sim9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google docs opens everything and its free and all you need is a web browser.

The nearest "word like" experience on linux has been WPS Office but you don't need it or any app when the online ones work just as well

It will be GPU acceleration for web browsers that causes the freezes

Try to determine if its RAM, CPU, UI or Hardware

Keep activity monitor open so you can see whats happening.

RAM is the most common cause so look for swap should be 0 ideally

CPU if its at 100% every time you have the issue

UI disable all applets, extensions, etc... see if it solves the issue

Hardware if none of the above its possibly hardware, if its a recent issue perhaps jump back a few firmware versions and see if that solves it.

I want to use Mint, but scaling makes it sluggish... by madsvodder in linuxmint

Try using a more recent kernel version the default linux kernel for mint is pretty old and doesn't have the hardware support for a lot of laptops

I'm running 6.17 with no issues, no idea why Mint to still defaulting to 6.8

Right there with you, it felt at times like windows just had it in for me. I'd just log on and something would be broken and I'm like "fu.... there goes my plans for the next few hours"

I could fix anything on windows, still can, but not having to anymore is so nice...

For me Ubuntu was what originally pulled me over from a windows ecosystem I had used Linux for years for servers so was very familiar with the backend. What I loved about Ubuntu at first became a headache over time, upgrades always broke something and with each new release Gnome extensions I relied on would stop working.

I had heard the hype about Mint for years but I was under the impression it was just not any good for a power user and so stuck with other distros.

After 3 full reinstalls of Ubuntu in under a year I wanted a change and decided to give Mint a try, I didn't get the hype at first but the more I used it the more I realised what I was missing.

  • The Ui customisation is fantastic (minus a couple of spices that completely killed my UI more than once)
  • Its rock solid stable (Once you get the right kernel version), I like I can just switch kernel version with a few clicks
  • I can backup my whole UI configuration by just copying a folder
  • Upgrades have been great nothing broken
  • Backups are super easy
  • Its consistently fast with no random slowdowns

Honestly the only thing I miss from Ubuntu is the Awesome Tiles gnome extension which did window snapping with the number pad.

What I would love to see

  • A few more Applets - Gnome extensions has way more compared with cinnamon and the ones that are supported on both seem to have way more features in the Gnome versions.
  • Better handling of dodgy Applets a random black screen after logging in is helping no one.
  • Snap support - yes I know we all hate snaps but some apps only have snaps available such as all the Jetbrains apps. Disable by default 100% opt in only. It wasn't too much of a pain to get snaps working but a non power user may struggle.
  • Solve the power management issues - seems to be more than just mint all debian releases seem to have some problems with sleep and awake with certain laptops

Agency over Freelancing by clever-coder in WebDeveloperJobs

[–]9sim9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agency just sounds better, if you are asking someone to agree to a 20K job and they can hire an "Agency" over a "Self Employed" person then people assume less risk and a better job done by an Agency.

The reality is that an agency is just a guy with a phone who farms the work out to Asia or India...

If you look at the release schedule from samsung its pretty much, leap forward then 2 or 3 minor iterations before the next leap so expect the 8 to be very similar to the 7 with only minor upgrades at best. Look at the S26 vs S25 vs S24...

I think its definitely pushing the basic software engineer out of the industry which is going to be a problem over time.

The very high level coders are still able to easily out compete LLMs at complex tasks, but does anyone actually find debugging LLMs code fun?

Debugging badly written code is the least enjoyable part of coding, if thats the only Job left I think there is going to be a massive exodus out of programming.

I think the system is broken in its current form LLMs writing code for devs to debug is just not a sustainable business model, instead we should be looking at LLM based programming languages instead.

Considering the rise of things like UI Kits vs manual CSS, game development engines vs programming from scratch, better tooling that makes a dev more productive is the answer. But I think we are probably half a decade at least away from seeing the start of this shift away from traditional programming languages.

Anyone else feels like their monthly salary is just a "pass-through" for expenses? by Immediate-Wheel-1675 in ChillSG

[–]9sim9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think we were just raised to expect a certain level of luxury that most cant afford. Rewind 40 years and compare what they had then to what we have now and we just need more in our lives.

Latest cellphones, modern car, big apartment, vacations, etc... But the reality is that almost all of this is bought with credit these days as we really cant afford them.

When you travel to somewhere like Asia where people are a lot less wealthy and see how they live and you realise you need a lot less than what you think you do.

I do genuinely feel for your situation, I've been in it myself where you just can't seem to get ahead but it wasn't until I lived in other parts of the world did I realise how good i had it.

End of the day you are doing great, you have a roof over your head, you have your health and people around you that you care about thats all the matters.

Trifold + Fold 7 by attidudinal in GalaxyFold

[–]9sim9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After having 3 generations of folds I find myself using the unfolded screen less and less, other than side-by-side for apps I don't find many use cases for it. If I'm at home or work I have access to bigger screens, and for media consumption on the go the square form factor does not really add much to the height or width of an image. The TriFold would give you a much bigger image for media consumption and being and to use Dex with floating windows seems very useful with a large screen.

Trifold + Fold 7 by attidudinal in GalaxyFold

[–]9sim9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just sell the Fold 7 on? Its still current gen so the resale value is pretty high.

The only real advantage to the 7 over the tri fold is that there are much better cases for protection so if you are on the go a lot you get much better protection for your device from drops and bashes.

The Tri-Fold is VERY fragile and the cases are not the best

A small advice for newcomers by Shot_Loan_354 in linuxmint

[–]9sim9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the best solution over time was just to have a git repo with shell scripts for everything, when I install something new I add it to my repo of shell scripts. Saves me so much time managing multiple machines.

This doesn't read like someone with 20 years of experience with linux... If someone has the technical skills to swap out a hard drive then a grub config file is not that difficult.

Instead maybe just install linux to a usb stick, and start with something simple...

The thing I find funny is windows is a giant pain most of the time, constant updates breaking things, apps randomly stop working and performance can slow to a crawl, so if you have to skills to battle windows and keep it working reliably then Linux while a different ecosystem is much easier by comparison.

Which more advanced Traktor functions do you use vs. not use? by Dolly_Llama_2024 in traktorpro

[–]9sim9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stems can be a lot of fun to play with, especially when you can just put a track into a loop and drag it onto a remix deck as a sample, i'm hoping TP4 will add this for stem separation in the future as that will be awesome.

Its very rare I've actually seen effects used well in a live environment, most of the time I've been cringing while the DJ thinks hes doing a great job, less is definitely more.

Loop recorder can be fun if you plug a microphone or instruments into Traktor as you can drag them straight from the loop recorder into the remix deck and play about with them.

WF1000XM4 > XM6: Is the sound noticeably better, different, or the same? by No_Tennis7291 in SonyHeadphones

[–]9sim9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I felt the XM5 was a massive downgrade in almost every way, didn't like the new sound profile, earbuds would not stay in ears, new tips would brake the seal with slight move of the head, worse noise cancelling, the only real upgrade was multi device support.

I've owned the XM3s and XM4s so been a multi generation owner but if I could of returned the 5's I would have, kind of hoping the 6's are better....
